sountrack (4)strings (248)bansuri flute (1)war (112)film score (23)world music (13)international conflict (1)
Description:
This one might be a bit intense and may not take you to a happy place, but every once in a while things get to me and in those hours I find comfort in making music. And although I consider this to be only slightly more than a draft, I'll probably move on to a more cheery subject for my next post!

In the meantime this is open for comments. Thanks!

Verrry goood ! &mdash 10/21/06 - 05:16:03 AM
Intense yes it is and thats what I like about it !
Who says every piece of music has to take you to a happy place ?-)
You are a magician.

My turn... &mdash 10/21/06 - 07:39:56 AM
I feel I need to simply refer Rob's words above, and agree vehemently.
The darkness and foreboding is palpable here, you weave the clouds that
hang in the air and choke the beauty from the world. The (musical) scale
is tipped gently toward the middle-east here, I can hear it woven in, but it
is not overtly pronounced. The timing of percussion and horns is, as
always, perfect. Well done! No critiques here...

Drakonis

pretty fab with those strings......

sublime orchestration &mdash 10/21/06 - 10:17:47 AM
This is a very tastefully created piece of music. The instrumentation/arrangement/orchestration is sublime, as is the so well balanced production. Great all over. Walter

Dark and Masterful &mdash 10/21/06 - 10:42:19 AM
I very much like the mix of orchestral and electronic elements (with a
slight Near East feel) and the mood this invokes. Excelllent production,
very cinematic.

Pro-level &mdash 10/21/06 - 03:15:21 PM
This is very well done. Great job of setting a mood, and still making the
piece very dynamic as it flows. Great orchestration decisions, great use of
sounds. Wonderful job of engineering - this track, besides being so well
written, sounds excellent, as well. Very polished, very pro, very
interesting, very compelling.

Maurice Jarre... &mdash 10/22/06 - 06:49:33 PM
Thanks for pointing out Maurice Jarre to me. I'm always eager to learn about great musicians I had not come across before.

I can picture &mdash 10/22/06 - 11:05:38 AM
the bad guys going about their business planning some gruesome attack
or other, a bit James Bond-like at times, maybe because of those oriental
sounds. But a draft?! I don't think so! This is professional "out of the box"!
Q: Did this just take a few hours to make? :stunned:

[ Reply to This ]
Well... &mdash 10/22/06 - 07:12:11 PM
Most of it was done in one evening/night, but polishing it took another one or two sessions. The reason I call it a "draft" is not so much about the musical, but more because of the emotional aspect, which doesn't quite satisfy me yet. I guess I just like to have a positive, more resolved energy in my music. Thanks for your interest!

Intricate... &mdash 10/22/06 - 04:21:05 PM
...and moving. An excellent piece. Reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's work in
Gladiator, and I mean that as high praise. So many textures, so many
layers, great instrumentation.

How nice of you... &mdash 10/23/06 - 10:01:16 AM
There's obviously a world of difference in accomplishment between Hans Zimmer and me, but I consider Gladiator his best work to date and any similarities, real or just really generous encouragment, I consider to be a good thing! Thanks a lot, Aquila.

nice... &mdash 10/22/06 - 04:33:17 PM
This is a great piece with a lot over subtle movement. I do like the choice
of sounds... but most of all the note choices are excellent in conveying
the mood. Good work

NICE &mdash 10/22/06 - 11:30:09 PM
Definatly sets the mood for conflict. I'm sure some video game designer
out there somewhere would go totally bonkers over this track and hunt
you down for it! In fact I encourage you to solicit your work. It might be
fun..

Brilliant execution

I've tried to make songs for FFR which is an online version of Dance Dance Revolution.

I'll send you an email for a game that's coming out soon that I decided not to submit to. Just send me a note with your addy.

Razor sharp and compelling. &mdash 10/23/06 - 11:23:33 AM
Dark, ominous, sinister yet totally compelling. Don't know if you're
commenting on the current Middle East conflagrations but it took me
there. Feter mentioned Maurice Jarre the wonderful composer for the
music to Lawrence of Arabia. Yet to me and maybe this was who Feter was
thinking of it evokes his son Jean Michel Jarre who is more into synth
composing. In any case great piece.

A-ha! &mdash 10/26/06 - 08:57:58 AM
Really appreciate your comment. You have an excellent sense for subtlety and drama which also shows in your own music. I didn't know about about Maurice Jarre and Jean Michelle Jarre being his son. Thanks for that too.

Deja Vu... &mdash 10/23/06 - 01:36:27 PM
I'm getting a slight sense of deja vu when writing this. I feel as if said
what I'm about to say before. A few times, even. I guess there's a reason
for it.

I just love this and I have nothing to criticize!

And let me just say this - you're definately one of my top 5 favorite MJ
artists.

There. I've said it!

Outstanding.

That's the sound of my jaw hitting the table. This is an incredible piece of work. Everything flows together seemlessly...I love the blending of electronic and acoustic sounds. Very evocative and compelling. The percussion parts are nicely placed and balanced. Yet another fav!

Thanks! &mdash 10/26/06 - 09:13:25 PM
I'm glad you got something out of it. I don't usually have a concept when I make music, I just let it "flow". I guess that's the beauty of making music without any commercial obligations.

as if I am deep down the water meditating. As other people have already

I'm using Garageband with all 5 JamPacks. The bansuri flute is from JP5, the string orchestra and Steinway piano from JP4. If you're really interested I could send you a screenshot (but email is disabled, so...) Usually play in all instruments with midi keyboard and use pencil tool to adjust and modify, especially the rhythmic parts. Also used individual drum sounds from the library (Persian market drums). The snare drum used for the concluding rhythm is the only sample not from the Garageband package.

Underscoring with quality production &mdash 10/27/06 - 02:03:02 PM
I especially dig when the grand piano comes in. I imagined, if this were a concert piece, that a driving solo would have followed. Haunting, hip, multiethnic, seamless journey. Cinematic music often has a necessary simplicity to it, short melodic themes that need repeating, motifs. You achieve this thru mood and chordal nuances, since there are really no lyrical themes. Above all, you maintain a production quality that reverberates depth and quality, which would lend itself well to underscore many different actions. Very nicely done.

Priceless! &mdash 10/27/06 - 03:34:17 PM
Comments like yours are the reason I joined MacJams in the first place. There is indeed no lyrical theme, as I preferred to use the various instruments to tell parts of the journey with the only repeated theme being the ending. Seemed to work best to convey the transient but unresolved energy behind this track and is (admittedly) part of the reason I called it a work in progress. And by the way, thank you for taking so much of your time to offer your expertise to so many of us. I consider your stopping by something like a "stamp of approval" and is yet another inspiration to improve.

Ratcheting up the tension &mdash 12/31/06 - 03:29:12 AM
This is really well orchestrated and mixed, with a great use of 'real' and electronic intruments. The piece has a lovely sense of motion, and of something not quite being right.

A totally professional sounding piece.

Strong and well produced &mdash 01/27/07 - 07:11:07 PM
Your writing and production are awesome. Nicely done. Very nice.

BTW: much as I love tranquility; I must have intensity to keep things "moving along".

Intense indeed. &mdash 02/03/07 - 12:40:32 AM
This is an excellent piece of music, and with a great production. Your arrangement is pretty dense, but somehow it keeps sounding open. The details are never obscured. That's pretty tough to do, and you succeed well. I like how well the electronic drums fit in wiith the orchestral sounds. Nice mix of the old and the new.
