Description:
another,,,

Lyrics:

she could be most anywhere:
she smells like apples and tastes like pears...
she comes and goes without a care,
like she's the queen of here and there...

she wears the same tobacco dress
and left a name on her school desk...
now the coffee color of her skin
leaves a stain where she's been...

some days i feel so in-between...
-between the window and the screen...
in all these other lives that flutter by,
there has to be a source of light...

now, she could be most anyplace...
a shadow across your sleeping face...
-but she won't stay, like the rain and snow,
she's got a million places to go...

some people seem to grow so small,
they don't even begin at all...

-could the ones we love be anyone?

-would you open up your heart
and let them in?

There aren't that many people.... &mdash 10/25/06 - 10:08:42 PM
...on this site who awe me as lyricists, or as combined lyricist/
melodicist, but you're one who does...

And then you have that voice....

Not fair, is it?

Great production, too... and Lisa top of your fan list.... Man...

Terrific song and everything that goes with it...

Sigh &mdash 10/26/06 - 01:27:58 AM
You posting a new song is probably in my top ten list of things that
make me happy! I told you in chat, once, how much I admire your
writing, but I truly can't say it enough times.

You pack so much into your lyrics, the second verse, starting, "She
wears the same tobacco dress.." is so rich with associations and
implications, a tobacco dress could be dyed with tobacco, or it could
be a dress that smells like cigarette smoke, or the color of a moth; the
idea of a stain runs through that whole portion of the song, a name on
the school desk, coffee color, a stain. It makes think of the ring a
coffee cup leaves on a table, the evidence that it was ever there at all.

If you get me started on all the terrific sound in the song, I'll probably
type my fingers off. The half-rhyme of by and light, the assonance with
pear and care...it goes on and on.

The line "could the ones we love be anyone?" is beautiful and profound.

Of course, it's not just the writing. I love your voice, the arrangement,
your touch on the guitar. Thank you so much for sharing your songs
here and letting us download them. I've been listening to 'Happiness,'
all week on my daily walk and I enjoy it so much, and sing along every
time.

I'm with you, Lisa &mdash 10/26/06 - 12:37:05 PM
I don't sing along (it's called "Spare The Neighbors" in my case), but I also love Jonx's Happiness. I've been compelled to send it to some friends whom I knew would likewise be enchanted by it, and it turns out they are. Mr. Jonx is a true artist.

Well - balanced song, with excellent singing, playing content, dynamics. It's going straight onto my hard drive, with all the other jonx recordings.

She stole my mind... &mdash 10/26/06 - 07:33:59 AM
I was pretty much going to say all the things Ledebutant said, but she
seems to have gotten here first... so please multiply her sentiments and
connections to the lyrics and writing and singing by 2 (thousand) or so. I
even like the up-and-down melodic line that feels like a fluttering moth.
Extremely well thought out and performed.

Drakonis

One person?! &mdash 10/26/06 - 10:29:11 AM
So many good things to comment on! Your poised vocal performance, the songwriting, the excellent choice of rhythms and beats (love the panning effect), overall combination of the instruments. Not to forget the lyrical quality of your song. What a soothing and thourougly enjoyable performance. Marvellous! Only small thing I was wondering about were the frequent "stop and goes" towards the end. But this is a song I would normally expect to pay for. Can't believe your amazing level of musicianship! MissChaos does have a point there!

Words.... Words &mdash 10/26/06 - 12:36:15 PM
words are your play things... words are your toys.... words are your paints... I want to grow up to be just like you... you have more than just a gift, this doesn't happen by itself... you put in the work, and your intuitive sense brings it the rest of the way home... but you sure make it seem effortless... I love this

sincerely outstanding

perfect &mdash 10/27/06 - 04:45:30 AM
for my morning wake up song, and I know that feeling will stick as i listen to it throughout the day. The production is only surpassed by your crushing performances on vocals and instruments. totally unreal.
there's an albums worth of exceptional lyrics in a single track. the feel is tuned to my personal space.

Phew &mdash 10/27/06 - 10:10:05 AM
Simply masterful, perfect, beautiful song. A touch of early Prefab Sprout.
There are no tiny little quibbles I can find. This is just perfect. If one of the big studios don't sign you up very fast, they're very stupid. This is an excellent performance.

One little detail &mdash 10/27/06 - 03:05:08 PM
After all these flowers you're getting, I almost don't dare to criticize your track. It's beautiful. I just wouldn't use those strings that show up only once, shortly before the ending. They seem a little bit out of place, because they are not used anywhere else, and they don't really sound realistic, like the rest of your instrumentation.

But this is for arrangement. Your performance and the simplicity of the recording is excellent.

thanks! &mdash 10/29/06 - 05:50:05 PM
thanks all for the kind and flattering comments--yeah core, that string sect didn't really work for me-i wanted to hand it over to composer clark to finish off-if the string voices sounded better...i know what you mean about the stop/starts too-i'll fuss w/ the rhythm backing soon when i have time-thanks for your astute critique and to all y'all here at MJ-cheers!

Can I vote again? &mdash 10/28/06 - 11:47:18 AM
I've been listening to this all week, especially on my walk to work and back. One of the best lyrics I've encountered on MacJams. Almost novelistically vibrant and clear... Or like an imagist poem or haiku...

And I LOVE the perfect tobacco colored mother graphic... You really did it with this song...

Lovely track &mdash 10/29/06 - 11:18:49 AM
Jonx, this is great on sooo many levels I don't know where to begin. The production is top notch, arrangement strong but subtle, fantastic voice, but top for me is the lyric.

'The coffee color' line is truely inspired.

Fill the gap left by Crowded House.

I love... &mdash 10/29/06 - 01:15:57 PM
I love the simplicity of this piece. Lyrics are cute. But could i suggest a little more variety in the melody in the second half. And the 'flutter by...' section should have a little more melodic variety too. Hyper-critical mode is engaged by the way :-)

Be cool,

Hats off to the song master! &mdash 11/14/06 - 04:09:19 PM
Just amazingly good on all levels - lyrically and vocally especially, this is really masterful. Hypercritical me says: "I would really love to hear one of your songs produced by someone with serious production chops" - I suspect we'd all be even more amazed.

Marvelous lyrics &mdash 11/24/06 - 11:50:26 AM
You seem to come upon your subjects from a 45 degree angle, never straight on, which always results in a fresh perspective. That...I guess is what a poet should do, right? Great job.
