Loop It or Lose It (18)LIOLI (36)
Description:
Here's my stab at Loop It or Lose It round #1:

http://www.macjams.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=6;showtopic=65856

I tried lo limit my use of the loop by only transposing it in full octaves, though I did lay on some heavy effects. The loop doesn't appear for nearly a full minute, but from then on it is constant throughout the rest of the song. There are essentially two separate mutations as well as some sampled rhythms cut from portions of the loop.

Mutation 1:
transpose -12
filter: MDA Degrade
filter: EQ
filter: Camelphat (bandpass, flanger, compressor)
filter: EQ
filter: MDA Detune (channel delay)
filter: Tape Delay

Mutation 2:
transpose: -12
filter: Camelphat (resonant lowpass w/LFO modulation)
filter: Camelphat (tube distortion, bandpass, flanger, compressor)
filter: EQ
filter: Tremelo
filter: Chorus

I set the song in E harmonic minor. To me the loop sounded like Em (EGB), Esus2 (EF#B), and Esus4 (EAB). E harmonic minor gave me those notes as well as a raised 7th (D#) that has an exotic sound.

Finally... &mdash 10/27/06 - 02:40:19 AM
I was wondering when I'd get to hear yours. I think it was a little too mind-bending to listen to right before bed though! My brain feels wrung out. In a good way. It begs to be played on iTunes with a good psychedelic visualizer. The mixing and the sounds are pitch perfect. It's going to haunt me, I know it!

Thanks Magritte! I set out to try something a little different than my usual and it required a lot of attention be paid to the timbre of the sounds. It isn't quite where I'd like for it to be, but a deadline is a deadline. I'm glad you find it a little disturbing - that means its working!

Super &mdash 10/27/06 - 04:00:47 AM
Very atmospheric and thematic. love the percussion and bass lines. Production is great. There are brilliant tension and comfort vibes present, working together at the same time. Love it.

Thanks WW! This was kind of my first foray into a theme-based melody. Baby steps, baby steps. I tried to create atmosphere with the tonality of the instruments alone, though in the end a healthy dose of delay has a lot to do with that as well.

the bass player. on my headphones i'm re living a gentle giant concert although this is so much more. margritte's suggestion of the visulizer was spot on. really amazing what you've done here. there's no vestige of the original loop for me, which makes it all the more remarkable.

I figured there are plenty of musicians on MacJams that would find a much more musically interesting solution to working with that loop than I might (and I was right). Changing the timbre of the loop was my best bet to put my own stamp on it. Same notes, different sound - I'm glad it was enough of a departure to provide a fresh listening experience. Thanks!

Crazy &mdash 10/27/06 - 08:26:28 AM
builds into the loop, heh, some manner of expectation here knowing it HAD to come.. :-) I like the effects you used to change the sound to fit your song. The piano was especially effective to carry that changeup.

Cool challenge idea, but it will take me months to get that loop sequence out of my head after today. Ughh!

Thanks for coming up with this, it has been a huge hit and a lot of fun.

I felt like I was cheating a bit on my own rules by holding off on the loop for the first 20% of the song - but I started having fun designing the intro and decided that was more important!

I've been trying to listen and comment on all the entries but find I have to take breaks between each listen. That loop has become a buzzing in my ear that won't go away. I'm glad you're risking "permanent loop acoustical syndrome" along with me to enjoy this little experiment!

Tapped my spine &mdash 10/27/06 - 10:39:05 AM
This is really cool with some really nice bass sounds that sound great and really fit perfectly. Good use of the loop and GREAT effects. Good title. Nice percussion sounds here too. First class production and song all the way!!!

[R] &mdash 10/27/06 - 11:51:17 PM
Thanks for mentioning the bass! I worked on that sound for quite a while. In the end it became a combination of three instruments. There is a bass instrument with the bottom frequencies cut off to provide the sound of the strings. Beneath the strings are two sub-bass synths that are tuned symmetrically away from pitch by about 15cents each. Those off-key synths vibrate against eachother to create a thick bass sound with a noticeable pulse.

nice foreshadowing... &mdash 10/27/06 - 11:52:03 AM
Knowing what was coming, I liked how you began to foreshadow the coming loop with the little piano bits early on, great sound fx (is this pulled from the ribs of your earlier great "Inertia" piece or similar?)

Very twisty detailed work on each little aspect of this, I can feel the attention to detail here... quite trippy and spine-bending.

Thanks drak! I've always loved the textural aspects of sounds and you're right, I was chasing the some of the same things in Inertia. Some sounds just seem to suggest so many things - spaces, moods, objects, voices, movements. I often get so preoccupied with sound design that I forget pesky things like melody and chord progression!

Fantastic opening &mdash 10/27/06 - 01:19:08 PM
and you manage to keep up the invention throughout. Are you playing keys/triggers for most of it? It has a great organic feel. Cool!

[R] &mdash 10/28/06 - 12:08:51 AM
No keys here! I used Logic's EXSP24 to set a fairly lengthy glide on that opening synth. Because it slides between overlapping notes it gives the impression of reaching and falling. A little bit of tweaking the notes leads to something that sounds like a performance. Thanks!

whirrring &mdash 10/27/06 - 09:51:34 PM
and other great things... particularily love what you did with that higher whiring effect right about the middle of the song... that's the kind of stuff I like to tuck in with some warm guitar layers... what do you us for drums?

[ Reply to This ]
[R] &mdash 10/28/06 - 12:15:53 AM
Drums are pretty standard sources. The kick and snare are stock Apple instruments. I added some effects to the snare to give it a dull metallic character and the kick (if I remember correctly) is processed through a fat lowpass filter and some other EQ and compressor tweaks. The cymbals are from the XL "Starclassic" instrument set off wizoosounds.com. Absolutely no processing on those at all. They sound great and come at a bargain price.

.. very trippy .... and took some serious mind bending I'm sure to do the serious loop bending .... I might have been "probed by aliens while listening" ... a small hazard of the job .... definitely an exotic mix and cornucopia of sound ! .... (since when do I EVER use the word "cornucopia" in a REAL sentence .... ????) ..... yeah the ending sealed the whole alien paranoia for me ..... HAHAHAHAHA ....

Wow! I love the sounds you've gotten. This is not only a fascinating, successful experiment, but a highly aesthetic one. Excellent! Great art too... what on earth is that? A strange attractor? Particle trails in a bubble chamber? Alien architecture? Great job with this cool music.

Unsettling &mdash 10/29/06 - 11:28:44 AM
I found this unsettling and evocative, with a great use of percussion. The piano line and bass give the track a solid grounding, allowing you to riff around them. I must admit there's too much to take in on first listen, but the changes in tone and texture are superb.

Need to download and 'pod this for the 6 a.m. drive to work.

Lordy this is Impressive! &mdash 10/31/06 - 02:04:30 AM
Firstly, thank you so much for creating this challenge, making something positive out of the rolling loop debate%u2122. As, I mentioned in the LIOLI thread, we actually got the start on the fourth song for our album, because of your challenge and wrote something we never would have otherwise.

Your song is really wonderful, darkly atmospheric and I especially enjoyed your detailed descriptions of your process, which made it even more interesting to listen to the song. You did things I wouldn't have thought of, but plan to try out in the future. Thank you so much for sharing your process, Mr. C.

Okay... &mdash 10/31/06 - 09:26:37 PM
....Now that was pretty damn impressive! Very much so - This is my first listen to a tune of yours, (I don't know why) and I have to say, that I'm very, very pleasantly surprised (I don't know why, again...) Certainly, I can hear that you are a skilled musician - Regardless of what I don't know about you... - The level of intelligence and care that was applied to this piece is not at all unlike the level of care and intelligence that tends to show in the the choice and arrangemlent of words that I have run accross in your forum post - Now why am I not surprised, again...

Thanks for creating the challenge, Dr. C - I returned home to an inbox that seems to be the resulting products of this great idea. Very cool - Dion

Nice Spine tune here, chiko... I love this kinda stuff. Parts of it (as well as the title) reminded me of my own "spine" tune that I did with PV, Mungo, and _nderscore a little over a year ago. Check it out: http://www.macjams.com/song/13265

musical noise or noisy music? &mdash 11/01/06 - 05:48:13 PM
so I listened to this, pressing my earbuds so far into my ears out of sheer awe (resulting in more degradation of my poor ear drums!)... and I immediately sent the link to my own "Doctor Noise" husband, _nderscore with the caption, "This is really bad ass!". enough said? Okay, I'll go on then since you've totally brightened my day with your comment on "Satori". I love the piano in this and the broken record ending. Absolutely tingling usage of effects and unpredictable programming. Take a bow.

~beautiful world of buzzy electronic goo~ &mdash 11/01/06 - 11:19:00 PM
there are so many things here to love.. glorious production & songwriting aside, it's the synthetic fluttering, almost backwardsy feeling that makes me feel like my mind is on overdrive. i'm visualizing generations of throbbing, pulsing synapses, firing in semi-coherent & rhythmic succession (probably not stretching reality too far). warmth, color, voids, connections, tied together by a haunting & partially transposed piano lead wonderfully sets off the versions of 'loop' & backing soundscape. beauty

Spectacular &mdash 11/03/06 - 08:35:45 PM
Fantastic. I am really enjoying this. You keep introducing sonic bon-bons to divert our ear from the loop(s). Amazing sound; big fat bass that just grabs you and won't let go. 10-10-10-10

Wonderful! &mdash 12/04/06 - 04:52:57 PM
I must admit that time constraints have kept me from listening to (let alone participating in) the loopers-are-losers fest. (What? That's not the name? Well, then it dang well ought to be!)

No, without joking around, you've really demonstrated how you can take a loop and doing something highly creative with it, rather than set it on infinite repeat.

This is a wonderful composition, with a good mix of electronic and real (the piano, the cymbals) sounds.

Spine is the first tune from you I listen to. I'm glad to discover your music. Bravo..
