Description:
One week ago today I had the good fortune to read about Chikoppi's challenge on MacJams, to use this fairly innocuous loop, I think it was Modern Rock Guitar 11, as the basis of a song. Never one to turn down a challenge, I cobbled together some loops at work on the laptop (won't my boss be proud) then went home and plugged in the trusty synths so I could add some polish and some sheen. I put a call into fellow Orbiter Ledeb and asked if she was interested in making an Orbiting song a submission for the challenge, and she was.
Generally, start to finish, it takes something like six weeks to make an Orbiting song. We are slower than Peter Gabriel. With only a week until the contest deadline, we knew it would be a miracle to get this finished on time. Somehow we pulled it off. We hope you enjoy. I hope you can hear Modern Rock Guitar 11 (it's in there on two separate tracks!) hiding somewhere under Ledeb's stellar vocal performance.
Be sure to check out the other challengers as well. Our thanks goes out to Chikoppi for creating the challenge and pulling us out of our collective creative doldrums.
Lyrics:
World that Breathed
Running up a steep hill,
the dogs are chasing me.
The trees conspire with the game,
wind blows through the leaves,
they rustle your name.
There's no escape for me.
No matter what I do
my love lingers on and on
nowhere I can run.
My heart is chasing you.
Woke up alone in our empty bed,
only problem is, it's all in my head.
We never had a real place or a time,
nothing that was really ours,
just a world that breathed in my mind.
No matter what I do
my love lingers on and on
nowhere I can run.
My heart is chasing you.
Run away, run away.
No matter what I do
my love lingers on and on
nowhere I can run.
My heart is chasing you.
Run away, run away, run away.
Nowhere I can run.

more than a pop song &mdash 10/27/06 - 02:46:12 PM
This is much more than just a (mainstream) pop song, but hey... genres on MJ... A nicely pulsing beat, richly fed by rhythmic synth loops. It builds up in a linear way towards the end, smartly interrupted by two little breaks. That's craftsmanship. Lisa's vocalising fits this song very well. It's rich and - as always - neatly performed. Pretty one. - Walter [ Reply to This ]
Thanks &mdash 10/28/06 - 12:33:29 AM
Coming from Mr. Particulate Eden, you saying that this is more than a standard pop song is very flattering. I've been listening to you and Shawn all week long, still and am still blown away by the line you guys walked between a pretty dark subject and vibe and creating something very desirable to listen to. I tend to be very hard on myself regarding lyrics (well, and maybe a few other things, too...) so I really did see this as a very standard pop song and felt a bit guilty that I didn't work harder on the lyrics and come up with something a little more clever. Matt's music really elevates this, though, so it was just my job to play along.

careening in from outer space... &mdash 10/27/06 - 02:59:31 PM
The Orbiting packs a heavy wallop on the challenge! This is fabulous. It has the vaguely disturbingly intoxicatingly longing lyrics and singing and music that only IllumiDebNaughty could come up with... leaving mental debris that twitches and sparks your interest and curiosity for weeks afterward. Hauntingly complex and polished, strange but intentional dissonances and disturbances that remind you this is no ordinary pop song. Brav a/o you two!

Mental Debris &mdash 10/28/06 - 12:37:18 AM
I'm so glad you liked this, Eduard, and so glad that you're still alive after listening and commenting on so many of these challenge songs. I believe the twitching may have been induced by that.
We absolutely had to swoop in from outer space to do this. You know a band called The Orbiting is always going to be interested in looping (groan, groan).

Yay for vocals! &mdash 10/27/06 - 03:17:57 PM
So excited to hear such wonderful singing over the by now slightly familiar loop. I agree this is far above and beyond the "mainstream." The production is superb. I don't know what more to say! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks so much for such a happy, positive comment. Both Matt and I love what you did with the loop, too.

Wow, how good can it get? &mdash 10/27/06 - 03:32:47 PM
This is great, I can't even find the loop in there. To me it has a bossa air to it that is very pleasant. Very well done indeed. . - Harold [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, Harold. &mdash 11/01/06 - 02:01:53 PM
We swear the loop is in there! It has had all sorts of f/x applied, but it's there, we swear it! I hadn't noticed the 'bossa air' until you mentioned it, but I'm kind of getting it now. (L)

Another amazing endeavor from what is fast becoming my favorite band. The lyrics paint a moving picture, and the up beat music sticks with me all day. Thank you Matt and Lisa. [ Reply to This ]

Yow, this is really damn good. Talk about overacheivers, take a challenge and run full speed with it! Amazing music, and Lisa you've really got the groove in your voice, and it works very well. Totally cool! [ Reply to This ]
It's really there... &mdash 10/27/06 - 08:37:28 PM
The loop's totally in there, PV! It's the backbone of the chorus and appears in a couple of other spots too, although less prominently. I'm just a very loud singer, maybe.
Thanks for the kind words on the vocals. I had a moment of freaking out, because I didn't like them and almost didn't want to post the song at all, but I have since chilled, thankfully. (Lisa)

First off, I can hear the infamous loop, not that I want to though :P The vocals are excellent, which is probably why the loop almost seems nonexistent. Very nice song- I'm glad you decided to post it! [ Reply to This ]
Kate Bush also was running up that hill &mdash 10/28/06 - 09:51:00 AM
wasn't there dogs in there some where too? Well anyway, I love this vocal, and the "No matter what I do" part really takes off. And then that "Run away" part just reminds me of Monty Python's Holy Grail, but I'm just being silly here. This is a really great tune, and I guess I'm glad there was this challenge to motivate you guys to post something. I think it could have a better ending, but that's the problem with deadlines sometimes. Great job! [ Reply to This ]

That's about it really :-)
P.S. I especially like the chorus

Well...except... &mdash 10/28/06 - 11:42:44 AM
...that I liked the sudden ending....
I DID immediately flash to "Running Up That Hill", and there WAS an unfortunate Monty Python synapse that sparked there for a second...
Neat pulse to this, great textures, and I love the lyrics. Lisa successfully manages to bring the art of yearning to something other than the acoustic singer-songwriter folkie sort of form... I actually find myself wishing, although it may be heresy, for a slightly stronger Lisa vocal, OR maybe another db or two in her voice... I'm not sure yet... I just want a little more assurance in there, or edge, or something... And I can imagine that as being just an artifact of a young song, put together on deadline...
You two sure are a team... I'm always so happy to see an 'Orbiting' message pop up in Mail...

Firstly, thanks for feeding back to me Orb, or i'd never have known about this great track.
Secondly, great title (a great song's just gotta have a great title, dotcha think?).
Thirdly, what a really great chorus, subtle but a real grabber - the vocal melody and backing work superbly.
The production on this is, as per, pro standard. Only negative comment is that it ends too damn soon. This would be a club stormer.
Still waiting waiting waiting for the album!

Thanks for coming over. I didn't actually mean to direct you over here on purpose. It seems there's some kind of glitch with the html in signature lines and I've suddenly noticed that if I post two comments in a row, the second one shows the song with the html showing...odd.
Regardless, I'm glad that you took it as a signal flag and came on over...now to find that bugs thread. :-)

Usually when I find myself enthralled with a song I can usually tell what it was that grabbed me. Be it the beat, bop, skills or hook. Etc..
I love this song and I can't figure out why. It has something I can't put my finger on. [ Reply to This ]

Hey, thanks for that comment and for fanning us, Pete. I also get a massive kick out of your profile photo!
I know what you mean about usually knowing what it is about a song that's drawing you back, for me there's usually some kind of "I can't wait to hear the fancy part that's coming up," component, like in our song Saturnine, with the backwards vocals at the end, but this song doesn't really have a fancy part. Of course, there's a subliminal audio track commanding others to be enthralled, but I figure everyone puts that in, right? ;-)
So happy that you liked it and hiya, I don't know if our paths have really crossed before. (Lisa)

Finger Lickin' Good! &mdash 11/02/06 - 08:15:27 AM
Is it the subliminal? Or the sublime?
I've listened several time since and I think what grabbed me is the beautiful marriage of your voice with your "mysterious" hardware. I'm a total newb when it comes to sound engineering but there is some compression or something on your voice that is so organic that it sounds like it's coming from you and not the equipment. I think it's the hardware anyway, otherwise an angel walks amongst us!
Hiya back, and great to finally cross paths! [ Reply to This ]

i can't believe I haven't already commented. listened before when it came out, and it just grows on me. Lisa's voice on this is etheral. My question to you today is what piece of hardware/software is responsible for that synth sound in the beginning? The one immediately after the initial "pinging synth",the one that is executed by playing the ascending chord notes. I beleive it repeats thru-out.
I have to have that sound!!! [ Reply to This ]

I went through some songs that's been sitting in my mailbox for a while... Sorry I haven't got around to see to that you stayed on top of the ratings... 'cause this one is good:)
Dig your vocals Lisa. They are so cool and relaxed.
The arrangement and production is clever and builds perfectly.
Good lyrics. 'We never had a real place or a time'... so it's just my imagination then? [ Reply to This ]

Am I alone in seeing an amazing lift in the quality of MJ music? After 3 weeks away, I get back to a collection of astounding songs performed and produced as good as they could be. This is yet another I've come accross in my listenathon. Matt's amazing music bed drives the whole thing along and Lisa's vocals are providing the highlights and soul. You both have extreme individual talents, and the combination's not bad either :) So when's the CD coming out?

No KIDDING! &mdash 11/13/06 - 03:52:15 AM
I can't speak for our particular contribution, but heck yeah, there has been a massive pile of good music coming out lately. It's getting kind of scary, actually. The coolest part about it is that I think the growth is happening as a community, because it comes from us helping each other, so this is like Macjams University. I truly believe it comes from the fact that we share our music here so we're motivated to improve, but also we share what we learn.
It's the coolest. Welcome back from your vacation, too. Neil. [ Reply to This ]
The CD... &mdash 11/13/06 - 03:55:31 AM
I think we're still deciding whether to do EP or LP. Technically, I think we already have enough for an EP, but we put this song together in a week, which is encouraging and makes us think that maybe we could go for a longer album. That's the direction I'm leaning, at least and since Matt's here, I'm the official band spokeswoman and what I say goes...at least until he gets here. [ Reply to This ]
Who let those dogs off the leash?! &mdash 12/07/06 - 08:16:40 PM
I love the resonant LFO filter on the loop - could have slipped right by me if I hadn't been listening for it. There's a similar treatment on the cymbals that works just as well.
The vocals sound great, with lots of air that is also accented by a very "breathy" synth that appears toward the end. The lyrics and the character of the song work together beautifully.
Lots of very nice synths worked throughout the composition. They're all produced tight, locked into the mix without disappearing into one another. Smooth and energetic track - way too much character to slimply slap a "pop" label on it! [ Reply to This ]
