After a long break this is my latest song. It's about a girl who feels nobody believes in her and she's not sure if she should listen to them or just drown them out.

It's good to hear from you again. The combination piano and guitar work well. As usual your voice is the highlight and a accompanying backup to boot. Composition wise very fitting your vocal style. Maybe a bit busy instrumentally for too long and needed a break like your ending in the middle somewhere, but what do I know. Thanks for sharing as usual.

The more I listen to your voice the more I'm loving it. Crystal pure and suited perfectly to your song writing style.

The instruments sound great on this. Those Garrison guitars suit your strumming style well. They make them back in my hometown in Newfoundland. Your voice reminds me of some of the singers that have had some success out of there.

production techniques... your voice is very good and deserves to be heard... your level is really not bad... you can improve vocal presence by mild compression.. tops 3:1 ratio at maybe 4db cut... I wouldn't go more than that... always try out miking different areas on your guitar to find the sweet spot, and eq out 120 and below so that it cuts through the mix without interferreing with the bottom end... these are moves that I usually make right out of the box, and then you can adjust to taste... this song breaths well you can also try compressing the final mix, as a rule... when you can hear the compressor... it's too much...

and... by the way very good song and performance... your vocal is emotional and convincing.. without a good performance, we really can't fix anything, we're just polishing turds

What are you using to monitor your mix in GB? It does sound like the voice is a little back in the mix in my monitors. Scott's tips are on the money, and I suspect that because the speakers or headphones that you are mixing on have a little more top end, your voice sounds louder when you are mixing it. The guitar is a little mid-rangey, which is not necessarily that bad, but it's booming a bit and drowning out your voice. Take it down a notch and you should be okay. Mixing is always trial and error, and I am always tweaking things after listening to them on different systems with fresh ears.
The song is pretty nice. Fresh vocal delivery and lyrically while not all sugary sweetness it's nicely optimistic.

A shame to nitpick a lovely song
You asked for critique on the mix, so I'm going to try to ignore the beautiful song and just focus on the technical aspects.

In general I think you need better separation. The piano, guitar, and voice are stepping on one another and the drums are getting lost in the mix. Find the sweet spot for each instrument (the narrow range of EQ wherein that instrument's voice is strongest) and then cut the other instruments in that range. I usually end up with cuts of anywhere from 2dB to 4dB deep with Q settings of 1.2 to 2.5. I also think you could roll the bottom end of the guitar off with a high pass filter set at around 100Hz.

Another thing that is killing your separation is the reverb. There are a couple of things to look out for: 1) Low Cut - your reveb settings could maybe stand to lose some of the low end. Raise your low cut filter on the reverb and the echoes will be brighter while the tones of the instruments will become more distinct. 2) Initial Delay - make sure your initial delay is long enough that the transients of the instruments (the click of the guitar pick or crack of the snare) are heard before the reverb kicks in. 3) Duration - sometimes a long duration isn't necessary to get a distinct reverb. The shorter the duration the less overtones are knocking around in the mix. Treat your reverb like an instrument and spend as much time on those settings as on any other part.

The piano bugs me a bit. It sounds a little thin given the part that it plays. You could look for a software instrument with a warmer sound and sustain on the notes. Others will have better suggestions than I.

Vocals. Rather than elevating them over the instruments, make the instruments get out of the way. Your voice sits somewhere around 1kHz to 1.5kHz. Solo the vocal track and sweep a bandpass EQ filter over it to find the frequency at which your voice is strongest - then cut the other instruments at that frequency. Your voice will pop right out of the mix without any added volume necessary.

Lastly, try cutting the drums a little around 300Hz and then adding a compressor AU to that track. Given piano, guitar, and vocals (all very strong in the mid range) the drums should be much more audible - with the kick on the bottom and the skin and the cymbals on the top.

Awesome stuff everyone! I really needed this because I felt like I just kept doing the same ol stuff and not progressing. Now there's so much more I can play with and adjust. I just turn buttons here and there and hope it sounds ok to me. I really appreciate the feedback! I wonder what that IK guy is going to say? :S Haven't been here in a while and never heard of him until yesterday. Oh well I can only get better from it. Ciao*~

Hi sarah - well,more technically-competant people than me have commented, and some great advice given. I had the same issue where I'd jack up the vocals to compensate for my lack of understanding of EQ, and i think chikoppis comments are right on the money. To me, it also feels unclear as to what style of song you're aiming for - is it laid back and dreamy, or a bit more upfront?

The other piece of advice I've been given and found useful is too listen to 'commercially recorded' songs on your speakers when mixing, so if you are drifting away from a polished sound, you can get guided back to where you want to be. i usually pick one song and continually compare the song I'm mixing to that for consistency.
