Description

This is my response to several comments from within the MJ camp. Less distortion, moving things around in the mix. Still have a lot to learn but it is what it is.

Don't mind the drums, there just my mac keyboard. They should be up further in the mix but they just weren't good enough to have any more up front. Love to see what a real drummer could conjure up.

Thanks to the folks who've offered their thoughts on my previous pieces. You are a part of this.

	Good start I think this has potential Pete, sounds like an intro before the drums and everything kick in. The guitars get a little too busy towards the end of this for my tastes (last 1/5 of track approx), but otherwise, keep going. Steve Check out my latest song called Deeper (w/t Racerat)

I agree with your assessment about the guitars. When I had them centered it was harder to hear the problems in the mix. Now that things are spaced out a little better, the flaws are more evident.

My goal on this one is to nail the sound I'm going for before lengthening it. There will be a couple of editions of this one I'm guessing.

Interesting...
...thinner, Strat-y-er sound... it IS less distorted, and interestingly, it has some echoes of the sort of sound Vic Holman sometimes gets...

Teasingly short snippet, though...

There IS more space and air to this...

You seem to be one of those MacJammers who actually takes in what people say and suggest, and then tries out the different ideas...

May I ask what you have available for instruments and stuff? Do you have access to a mic? An acoustic guitar? A bass? A MIDI keyboard of any kind?

This is one, for instance, where, if you could do it, I could really see one of the guitar parts being a clean and spangly acoustic, with the Strat playing off against that... And then a melodic-but-anchoring bass might give it more dimension...

I really appreciate your comments on this and my other pieces. It made my day to read your affirming sentiments as well as the ideas for improvement. It's a prime example of how cool a place this site is, allowing for constructive feedback and offering validation for the craft of composition that I have just recently taken up.

And sure, I don't mind disclosing my musical inventory, or lack of it. Everything I've posted to MJ has been recorded with a Squier Strat plugged direct into my iMac via a 1/8" adapter. Except "Valentine", which was my friend's Gretsch.

I did recently pick up a mic, an SM58, but the signal was too weak for plugging direct into the iMac, which was dissapointing seeing as I didn't think it needed phantom power. I did order an ART preamp this week so I am looking forward to trying out some acoustic work, as well as maybe inflicting some of my untrained vocals on the world.

I'm still looking for an economic USB mixer interface and I suspect Santa Claus may have a Midi keyboard under the tree this year. That will sure beat trying to play synths or beats with this old typing keyboard!

pete, your continuing to bring out some good tones in your guitars. keep on it. i was reading through your equipment list. a preamp will do miracles. most interfaces also contain preamps with 1/4" inputs as well as xlr for microphones with phantom power for condensor mikes. m-audio has there pre-mobile for under $150. thats what i use at the moment but i'm looking to upgrade on that as well. i would also suggest a multi effect pedal. digitech has quite a few in a variety of price ranges starting around $50. and they can put out in stereo.i personally don't dig the amp and distortion effects on garageband. plus this will save you on valuable cpu proccessing. of course then there's monitors, decent headphones, etc. ka ching! it will never end. hang in there. we'll get you up and going.

I admit I was pretty enthralled with a couple of the GB guitar tones but I'm finding them to be a little limited now. That might change if I can modify the signal with a preamp or mixer eq.

I do have a Line 6 Pod that I should break out. I use it for live playing but I've heard it makes a great recording signal as well.

Nice intro
This sounds like a great intro to a song. Touch of the Dire Straits in the plucking I think? Have you looked into the different guitar simulators available like IK multimedia's Amplitube or Native Instruments Guitar Rig? The later is due to be released as a software only offering mid Nov and has a wealth of virtual amps, effects etc which you access as a Audio Unit plug in within Garageband. Good work,and I look forward to hearing the completed song - in the fullness of time!!

Plucking
Good ear Smokey. Playing sans pick is something new I started about 6 months ago.

I found myself feeling far more expressive without a pick on the acoustic for rhythm stuff so I dropped the pick for the first time about 6 months ago. This new approach was nurtured mainly on acoustic, but I like what it allows on electric as well. I could never play as fast plucking as I can picking but there is a subtlety offered with the fingertips that can't be surpassed.

I'm desperate for a good strumming clean sound. GB has been anemic for that. I hope the preamp I have on order is the answer.

The Knopfler reference was over-generous. That man could pluck the geetar. "Brothers in Arms" is perhaps the finest the electric has ever been played.
