Keywords:
metamorphosis (2)brass (19)drakonis (55)
Description:
Can a piece of music withstand having the rug slowly pulled out from under it? Listen to this audio table-cloth trick, and tell me what you think? I started writing the original piece, "Escape", as a sketch for a melody in March 2003, and as life happened, set it aside until now. I found it last week, and added some counter-melody, the B-section, an intro and ending, then put in 4 repeats. But after the second repeat, the world slips forward from 1872 to 1972. So, what's special about 1972? Well, that's when Disneyland's Main Street Electrical Parade made its debut (thanks MissChaos for suggesting that!) Maybe there was a piece of that synthy style stuck in the back of my mind... who knows?

Update: Electric Lobster wanted to take this for a spin with his assortment of synthstruments... click here to dive into his vision of what this piece should be like.

Hardware:
Dual 1GHz G4, stuck between worlds.

Software:
Scored note-by-note in "Harmony Assistant" composition software, then MIDI-ported to GarageBand 2 & chose Jampack4 instruments & EQed. I created the "Planetoid" artwork with the freeware POV-Ray 3D raytracer (http://mac.povray.org).

and it's amazing how different instruments give the song a whole new perspective in the second half. Very cool, Eduard. This has energy! The artwork is really good, too, you P.O.V. genius.

yup, you nailed it &mdash 11/04/06 - 09:10:19 AM
Not a single note was changed, but the feel of the piece is quite different, just by sliding different instruments in there. Happy to know you liked it!

Ha.. I'm no P.O.V. genius, that's just your Point Of View, I simply have Persistence Of Vision :-)

I was trying to keep this a little bit light-hearted, and also slightly "over-synthed". You have a very good sense of how to use/voice synths more appropriately, and I'd be pleased and interested to hear your touch on this... I'll send you the GB file then, and look forward to learning some of your techniques!

A lovely creation. Not sure what the table cloth trick is, other than the piece appears to morph slowly, from an instrumentation perspective, from one beginning to end. Very pretty stuff, well constructed and produced. The Mouse would be proud.

By table-cloth trick, I was referring to the age-old trick of yanking the table-cloth off the table, leaving the silverware and plates in place. The notes stay in place, as the instruments get slowly "modernized". Happy to hear that you liked the tune and production, thank you!

I often hear and see .... &mdash 11/04/06 - 12:43:12 AM
.... a display of medieval ... gosh did I even spell that right .. looks weird to me .... ah yes where was I .... yes ... medieval-ness to your tunes ... I could hear the teeny tiny clacking of hooves on the tarmac ... did they have tarmac in those days ???? OK hooves on whatever they had ... as they were led out to the arena to parade for the audience in the stands ..... and then ... perhaps some lovely ladies in waiting (?) .. waiting for what I'm not entirely sure .... but they are there and they are colourful and they have those pointy hats on with veils ..... and something ... is about to happen to entertain the crowds ..... and the music is so lovely ... and lilting ... and light ..... and just as they were enjoying the jovialty of the moment ... is ends .... and then all is silent ..... and then they remember ... AH YES there was a DRAGON involved somewhere in this tale ...... but still they frolic because they know this Dragon is FRIENDLY !!!!! ONE day DRAK you truly need to get involved with one of those Medieval Day Festivals and write all the music for it ... (unless perhaps you probably already have done so many times .....) ... BUT you KNOW what I mean !!!!! You know what you like .. and you stick to it ...

Thank you for your excited tangential vision! Other than it being sort of French Overature Marchy style music, I hadn't really thought of castles and knights and dragons... unless of course, the fact that I dressed up and went to the local Renaissance Faire last weekend and this weekend somehow subliminally colored my music? Any time I can sweep you off to other places, let me know!

A classical style even with the synth (which is very good, BTW)... The transition from yesteryear (musically) to modern sound was pretty smooth, introduced in mid stream a little at a time then brought to complete fruition seamlessly.

I love the deep brass accompanied by the wind... Thanks for inserting the castanets :-)

The melody and sensational atmosphere of this piece lend themselves perfectly to the Disney legacy; we children of all ages can frolic in this joyous song.

Thanks, - Harold

It's in my blood, no matter how synthy and ambient and heavy-metal I may get (and I do)... there's still a bit of Beethoven Haydn in there. Glad the gentle time-warp and my choice of instruments worked for you too... and a little castanet here and there is a good thing... I'll record the real ones live for my next "live performance".

Great song... But this should have kept going. Maybe another couple of "metamorphi" would have been awesome. The beautiful thing about this piece, this style of music... is the potential to be something epic. The "classical" to "classic" sounds were spot on. My only complaint is the fact that I was left hanging wanting to hear more... wanting to know where it was going from here. Great concept... great composition. Nice work Sir Drak.

I guess all the working and waiting has paid off! I wasn't sure how you took my Disneyland comparison; whether you liked it or hated it, but since you're embacing it in your song description I'll assume you agreed! I think it's the main synth timbre you use in the electro half. Again, I like the "lobster claw" castanets, and you did a wonderful job of producing this and keeping it interesting throughout. This is another piece in your signature style. Nice job, Drakonis!

viral melodies and thoughts &mdash 11/05/06 - 11:03:09 PM
My step-daughter says I have a gift for coming up with "viral melodies" that stick in your head for weeks (which I took as a compliment.) And once you mentioned the Electric Street Parade, it now seems like everyone is hearing DisneyToons! I think that is a good thing too. Getting good brasses on this was tricky, and I still didn't write in the trombone/tuba parts very well, I think. Am I developing a signature sound? Could you pick me out in a taste test? I wouldn't mind having a "sound"... thank you!

First, I'd like to tell you that I like how this piece goes from a more symphonic sound to a more synthy/spacey tune. It's almost like when an old man (the symphonic sound), dies, and the next generation (the spacey synth sounds), gets born into a new world. This track flows nicely and I love the arrangement. , Drak. You have a fine ear for this type of musical style. Thanks for sharing it with us! Be well, Drak! Peace!

Very Drakoniesque &mdash 11/05/06 - 12:45:23 PM
In many ways. For starters it is very humerous in its happy melody and the choice of synthy instrument in the second half. Then we have the melody itself that is cathchy to a certain point but still has depths that make it worth while to listen to more than once! Then there is the Melody Assistant "air", or maybe it's the proximity to your Sometimes tune, which I believe uses the same flute sound as in the first part of this one? Here too I feel that the flute sounds a bit shy, she doesn't take out the notes to the full, it seems. And probably more...

Anyway, it is a fun listen and I liked the transition between the two parts. Agree with Boris about the old man dying and the next generation taking over...

Thank you for the music, for givin' it to me...

ethereal flute players &mdash 11/05/06 - 11:58:12 PM
I was scarred as a child... in 8th grade band, I was 2nd chair clarinet, and I sat across from the flute players. And they were very cute. So maybe that's why I love the sound of the flute. And the trumpets and trombones were right behind me... so I like loud brass too. Or maybe it wasn't that at all. :-) Anyway, these little pieces just pop up from time to time, and I work them into music that is good to my ears. I like mixing the happy/sad element in, since that's life. I'm always happy to know that it's good for your ears too!

Ha, I think the musimorph is effective. Personally, I thought we ended up in 1981. You're good at this layering of different melodies. This has that Drakonis marching forward, happy-sad sound that I associate with your tunes. Lovely planetoid art, you've made. Man, that thing is whipping around! Can you imagine what the sky would look like from the surface? And of course, the planet itself would be wobbling like crazy, with such a big, close moon, and the orbital resonance would destroy that ring... so I must conclude that we have here a space station with a clever disguise. This deception points back to the tricky nature of dragons. Bringing us full circle to the table cloth trick you have here which--did I mention?--ends up in 1981. Off to get another cup of coffee, but first I'd like to say I enjoyed listening to your music.

dark rings rising... &mdash 11/07/06 - 09:32:25 AM
This was an animation I did about 10 years ago, just dusted it off for this purpose. If you want to get physic(al), the planet and moon coalesced from blobs of dark matter, which is still compressed in their cores, giving them 20x the normal gravity of a planet & moon that size. The moons orbit is extremely tight, and creates huge tectonic activity as it orbits, ripping the gold right out of the ground and into a shimmering ring. Those aren't oceans, the superheated surface of the planet has melted the sand into glass. Nice place to visit, from a distance. 1981... do you hear bits of ELP? Thanks for stopping in and enjoying the journey, I certainly love the journeys you take me on!

That was so much fun! I love that slow morph; it's very effective. The tune itself sounds like a macabre march (one can just see the animation) ala Sorcerer's Apprentice. Then slowly it updates to the Disney spectacle of the Main Street Electrical Parade -- without actually borrowing from either source. That's just really cool.

Delicious mutation of sounds &mdash 11/08/06 - 04:30:27 PM
The medieval-like melody is very very enchanting, and the more I listen to this piece, the more it appeals. At first I was a bit surprised when the synth sounds slowly came in, somewhere halfway the song, but after listening several times I really understand why you did this. I think it's amazing how your song mutates from the 'natural' sounding instruments into the 'synthetic' ones. Great job, Eduard, and a very neat production.

Both version (yours and Rob's) have definitely their specific qualities. So hard to compare. Rob's version has more of a soundscape, whereas yours has more clarity and structure. You have to believe me that I really have no preference at all. As I said: I love you both :-)

Comparative Mutosis &mdash 11/10/06 - 08:26:14 AM
Thank you Walter, for taking time to listen to the melody and the experiment, I appreciate your ears and thoughts on this. This has been received so nicely that I have already begun thinking of a few new morphs to extend the idea. I learned quite a bit about Garageband while trying to wrestle with two copies of the music in the track editors, and that wasn't even that many tracks (18). We'll see if I can keep track of more tracks...

And I love you and your incredible talent too, Walter :-)

But this is more than just a clever trick, it's a damn fine tune. Enjoyed it a lot. Had to download it.

Hi J, how wonderful that you like this enough to snag a copy, thank you! I'm thinking the tune might be strong enough to withstand a few more morphestrations, and I have some thoughts. Given my slow pace at coming up with things though, it may be a few months, stay tuned!

march on... &mdash 11/10/06 - 08:49:12 AM
Hi Craft,
Well, I had some ideas for more morphs, and with your encouragement, I will give these ideas a try. There are a few styles that would still suit the music and be fun to listen to, I think. Now it is time for me to find time :-) Thank you so much for listening to my latest, and giving me your thoughts!

Playful yet moody. &mdash 11/13/06 - 04:48:49 PM
Catchy theme. Liked the renaissance bounciness to this piece very much. Your choice of instruments contributes to this a great deal. You're really accomplished at separating your sounds and obviously care a great deal about that. The clarity you achieve is impeccable. I liked the warm sounding winds playing against the relentless plucking instruments. The evolution to synthy sassy winds worked and even your playing of them reflected their sonic nature. Well done.

I wondered if you'd like this... &mdash 11/13/06 - 10:37:06 PM
Glad you checked this one out, Charles! It was a melody that I decided to strap onto the table and experiment on. You are right, I have always liked crisp orchestration (Sibelius, The Cars, etc.) and it is sort of rubbing off in what I try to do. Although I do sometimes like to get swept up in giant walls of Wagnerian sound too. It was fun to give this a modern twist... thank you for listening and commenting!

This is so "you" &mdash 11/16/06 - 06:44:05 PM
And yet perhaps it signals a move into even richer musical territories for you? Love the temporal shift; it occurs as a surprise but not a shock. Next up...more exploration of that very interesting orchestral mix from the beginning? I like the synth but I want to hear more of what you can do with that!

so me? fa so la? &mdash 11/16/06 - 11:47:15 PM
Such sweet words, thank you! They make me want to do more with this now... I have ideas for 2 more "eras" to add already (one before, one after), but I need some time to work on it, and this must be tabled for now, and I'll get back to it. I wasn't sure if anybody would find this experiment as interesting or fun as I had making it, but I'm excited by the response! And, I always look forward to your music too, as you have an awful lot of talent up your sleeves... when do I get to hear the next Magritte-piece?

Nice little journey &mdash 11/18/06 - 04:38:53 PM
I really wouldn't mind another couple of minutes of this.

Nice, smooth transition between the symphonic parts and the synthonic ones - very nicely done.

You also, as usual, have very nice melodies going on in this. They really caught my attention from the get-go and kept me interested the whole way through.

The only thing I feel I should mention is the ending. I don't really know what it was about it, but something just didn't sit right with me. Maybe it was a bit too sudden and/or abrupt... I don't really know... which kinda makes this remark all the more pointless.

Aaanyway...

A nice little journey through a wide spectrum of sound and music.

Lovely piece of work.

Great cmment &mdash 11/18/06 - 04:49:22 PM
Thank you Einarus! I have gotten enough positive feedback about this that I'll now be extending it with 2 more morphs (I already know what to do there now)... but I will revisit the ending idea now too... maybe a grand ending with a few of each "period" of instrument joining in, we'll see. Thank you for the critique!

Have to agree... &mdash 11/20/06 - 05:49:04 PM
Though the melody remains the same, the "morphing" voices change its texture and turn this into an interesting evolution of sound.
