Keywords:
Curry-style (4)guitar (831)music (125)
Description:
At the end of July this summer, I had my cousin from another part of the country visiting. Since she is one of the few existing fans of Curry guitar that I ever meet live, I lined the nylon Yamaha through the Yamaha AG Stomp and gave a series of improvisations, (also pushed the recording button in case anything would be worthwhile saving).

After now having gone through the recording and thinned out some less forunate parts, it seem like what remains can make up a suite of improvisations.

These are improvisations. Nothing is planned. Themes comes in the moment, or a second or two ahead. Therefore this music isn't well thought, and sometimes a little strange, but on the other hand it has the immediateness that comes from playing without knowing ahead.

I have post-edited the pieces though; cut away less fortunate parts, sometimes doubled short passages to get a more musically harmonic result, (it is not made to be a show-off or feat, but as something to be enjoyed as music).

OK .. enough talking. This is part one. Introduction.

Oh .. one more thing .. I recorded using headphones .. and I made the final eq-ing using headphones. It can guarantee that works on headphones .. hope it'll work even in speakers.

Hardware:
Nylon Yamaha guitar through the Yamaha AG Stomp + Mac G4

Definitely worthwhile saving &mdash 11/04/06 - 06:45:34 PM
I like this improv on guitar. It's very cool how the mood changes, yet it always remains consistently in tempo . Very pretty one, Curry. Faved & downloaded. Your cousin was lucky to get a live show. :-)

I particularly love your ability to improvise... &mdash 11/04/06 - 06:48:37 PM
There is something very alive in this music.

Very nicely recorded. Plainly, I should've bought an AG Stomp when they were around. You get a great sound out of yours....

Can't wait for the next bits....

and wonderful playing. I especially like the deep bass you get. You've captured the ambience well. I almost hear you breathing. Improvisation is great, and proves the great musician you are:)

It always amazes me &mdash 11/05/06 - 09:37:28 AM
when an accomplished musician, like yourself, can improvise and make the music sound well planned and well rehearsed. What a joy to listen to!

God bless,

Rick

.. well, this might sound a little strange, but if anyone would ask me if I have the ability do things like that, the answer would be positive no. It is more like something happening "by itself" when I lust for playing arrives and the often to active head stop thinking, relaxes and flow along instead .. so I just thank God for everytime it happens ..

Master Improviser! &mdash 11/05/06 - 05:14:48 PM
I like the sort of modal feel and the sort of melody-less use of the basics of folk guitar, though I could imagine a voice on top of this. I must admit I am not a big fan of the direct recording of an acoustic guitar, it seems to leave out some of the air of the room, but you get an awesome range with this, deep lows and not-shrill but clear highs. The EQ sounds pretty great on speakers. But I do think that this type of playing might sound better to me on steel strings, just my personal preference, and I'm not going to deduct points on that account.

Thank you for the feedback Jim.

One big reason I often use this guitar is that I can line it and don't need a quiet house, which is very difficult to get.

But I also adapt playing to how it sounds, so if for example changing stomp setting I start playing in another fashion.

So, I see you point in using steel stringed acoustic, it is a beautiful instrument. On the other hand I honestly think I wouldn't be able to play in this fasihon when using one .. not mine anyway, because the fashion gets different even with different steel stringed. Maybe if I could use some vintage Guild for a while ;-)

...good improv. (That's one reason I've always had a soft spot for jam bands.) This is really quite wonderful Curry. You were "in the flow" here (stream of consciousness). The playing is superb as per usual and the sound is amazing. I'm really looking forward to the next part!

Be well friend!

No doubt you are doing some of your best work when you are spontanious (in the moment)... I really love the disonence inside the chords that sometimes peek through... is this drop D or a complete alternate tuning??? your music creates moods and breathable atmospheres... in a perfect world we could crack open a bottle of red together.. and play all evening... now that would be communion

I was thinking that this had the feel of long hot days and then noticed that it was recorded in July. It's definitely music to accompany a trip along mirage dissolved roads. Very fine playing, lovely feel.

listening to your guitar playing inspires me and makes me feel so happy. I especially enjoyed the long, ringing sounds in the middle. you have such a rich, lovely bass sound to the guitar. near the end you really get rolling with an idea and it flows so well. fantastic! keep improvising.
