Description:
I always try to distill ideas down to their core. This song is about exactly that

JR is playing his trusty Tele on this one, and he came up with a beautiful little theme to set the pace.

Lyrics:
I'm A Carpenter

I'm a carpenter, I build boxes
Some are beautiful, some'll just do
My head is made of wood
And my blood is carpenters glue
I once had big dreams, but real life got stuck with the part, so
I'm a carpenter, I Build boxes
Sawdust in my pockets and my heart

You've done a good job when nobody notices
All your lines are straight and true
Nobody cares what a carpenter wears
They're glad to see you go when you are through

I love this town , I love my kids and my friends, too
I am an honest man, I keep it simple like a carpenter would do

I do OK, I make a living
I'd make a lot more if I wasn't so dumb
I like days off more than money
I'm not above having my fun
Jesus was a carpenter, too
But he remembered for the boxes he made
Nobody cares what I believe
And when I save somebody, I get paid

Wake up early, keep your tools sharp
Always cut on the right side of the line
Get a good breakfast man
Keep it square and you're gonna do just fine

I'm a carpenter in this crazy world
Trying to make a difference but I'm just one man
I try to love everyone and make my boxes as beautiful as I can
As I can
I'm a carpenter, I build boxes
Some are beautiful
Some'll just do....

Your Humor &mdash 11/05/06 - 06:58:49 AM
I've always seen your humor as a sign of real strong intellegence... your posts have always been real smart stuff... that humor is all but absent here, and replaced with such poignance that I don't miss one of my favorite things about your songs

this is as real as it gets

Whoosh! &mdash 11/05/06 - 05:07:50 PM
I love this song, but I know I would and downloaded it before hearing it. It's just so close to what I consider ideal music. Great guitar playing, like the addition of the "bop" in there, nice electric piano comping. And that's to mention some of the musical elements, and then there's the words that go to show you can write things that are more or less serious and philosophical in a way that would give Jackson Browne a run for his money. Love it!

Enjoyable listen &mdash 11/05/06 - 09:22:05 PM
Love to hear a tune about the trades. Really!

Way to go. Like that Lou Rawls vocal sound. Very rich in pop quality. The guitar has nice bite, like those licks.

Terrific. Glad I listened.
Lyric are outstanding and need to be sung!

So cool! &mdash 11/08/06 - 12:27:28 AM
Another beautifully played and conceived song Wal. My son in law is a carpenter (well a joiner really) and he'll love this! I enjoy your laid back style so much, and your guitar licks are second to none - is this a team effort, or a Wal solo? Whatever, excellent post guys - loved it!

Why lookit that... &mdash 11/08/06 - 11:07:28 PM
Genuine wit. Well then.

Lovely boppin' little tune with great humor and insight and as many layers as an ogre...

Nice singing, and that guitar is neat... Listening on my headphones, it seems like it has a little lower midrange fullness, but that might be the phones... Sure does have tone that thing, and someone knows how to play it...

Fantastic &mdash 06/10/08 - 02:42:14 PM
This is obviously well written, arranged, played, etc. But my favorite part is undoubtedly the lyrics and your phrasing. It's got a poignant and conversational tone that reminds me of Paul Simon. Great tune!
