Description:
This is the third song in the "Woman In a Bar" trilogy. The other two songs are Gin & Tonic and Whiskey Neat, Water Back"".

All three songs were written by enicholsIC and UncletupeloFan, so they are the ones who deserve the bulk of the praise. I was brought on by them as a singer, and I'm grateful for the opportunity, as I think all three songs are something of which to be proud.

Lyrics:
The deadbolt turns behind me
Waiting on a taxi to take me home
The driver knows just where to find me
And I never felt more alone

Takes about an hour for me to get here
But it never seems that long
Cause I can see you through your window
And you leave the light on til I’m gone

Love is a desert and my lips are dry
The noonday sun is burning red
But in the shadow of a bottle, baby
That’s where I lay my head.

Thousand times I picked up the phone
To see if you remember my name
Anger’s been the one thing that I own
Other than a stool on 10th and Main

I see you put that pot of coffee on
I know you drink Earl Gray
Rub my shoulders till the chill is gone
Tell me it’s gonna be okay

Yeah, love is a desert to this drifting crow
Who used to be your daughter
If I grab the hem of your coat and never let go
Will you turn the wine back into water?

Maybe tonight I’m gonna cross the street
I wonder if you would be shocked
You’ve never risen from your seat
But I bet that door’s unlocked

A long walk across your wet grass
Tonight I’ll try to pay the price
Never found it in the bottom of a glass
I guess it’s time to melt the ice.

Yeah, love is a desert to this drifting crow
Who used to be your daughter
If I grab the hem of your coat and never let go
Will you turn the wine back into water?

Will you turn the wine back into water?

Excellent Singing &mdash 11/05/06 - 07:34:43 AM
But, wow, is this depressing. The deliberate pace and sparse arrangement fit this well.
How about a happy pub song? :)

I don't think Paul does many happy songs. I've got some in my list, though. There's even a happy (well, it's about dying, only it's dying in that happy Irish way) pub song call "Rosin the Bow". I'll leave the sad stuff to Paul.

Like the last sands of the hourglass... &mdash 11/05/06 - 12:18:19 PM
I felt myself watching the beauty, the life, the happiness, slowly pouring out of my soul while listening to this, and was completely drained by the end of the song... this is a really stunning work. Again, great lyrics, wonderful slow-paced backing playing (love the simple/effective bass), and Joanna, your delivery on this was perfect... resigned, angry, detached, I could feel various emotions hiding behind clenched teeth... jeez! I need to go shake this one off for a bit... wow.

Very interesting comment. I, too, was drained after singing it. You also picked up on what I was trying to do. Considering that singing is acting (well, it is to me), I tried to put all of my emotion behind my voice, rather than in it. I'm really happy that you heard that and described it so well.

Ouch &mdash 11/05/06 - 12:27:20 PM
That's so good it hurts. Great stuff here. Your voice sounds great, the lyrics are heart wrenching and I love the mix and instrumentation. Very pretty music. I'll have to go check out the other 2/3s of the trilogy. My compliments to you and your collaborators.

I hope you enjoy all three songs. Ed and Paul really did some amazing work on these. I hope to work with them again soon.

That poison is a destroyer... These that can only hang their head low, hope for a better day, the next...

The song is painful, but this is a nice production. Great voice and prose.

I may not be addicted to alcohol, but I have enough addictive behavior to feel great empathy for the problem. At least in the end there was some redemption for her.

oooh ... I've been waiting with bated breath .... &mdash 11/05/06 - 01:12:44 PM
.... for the third song in this trilogy having been a huge fan of the first two .... definitely worth the wait. I'm kind of disappointed tho that it's only a trilogy .. I would love to have a whole collection of these melancholy bar songs ....

I was hoping you'd see this one, knowing that you liked the other two so much. I think Paul and Ed want to keep it at three. I wouldn't mind exploring the character further, but I don't really have a say in any of this. At least we finally got the last one done. Blame all of us for that as life sometimes interferes.

Never felt so enthralled to be made so sad. Insightful lyrics that show a true understanding of the human condition and wonderfully executed musically.

Yes, not the pinkest of songs. But a cool opportunity for the actress in me to play an interesting character. Thank you so much for your support on all three of these songs. I loved taking you along for the ride.

love how you work with words &mdash 11/10/06 - 11:56:28 PM
whether you own lyrics or somebody elses. I think even your choice of what you pick out is a great talent as well.

Your really a born and bred wordsmith either of your own and elses.

And you deliver quite well with your singin. I see were this tune is rated high! Righly deserved!

"Gin and Tonic" is one of my favorite songs, by anyone. Period. I play it on my iPod all the time. This is a nice additon to the trilogy of songs. I like the desolate sound in the music and in your voice. Great lyrics. It's a very moving song. Nice job to all involved.
