Description:
Originally posted this track at MacJams in the summer of 2004 under the song title Johannes Rag.
Thereafter I have taken it off the site for two not perfectly clear reasons:
1) I began to suspect that I've heard something somewhere sometime that resembles the introductory theme, so I thought that maybe(?) I had not made it up completely by myself but unconciously fetched it from somewhere in the vast ocean of music memory.
2) Didn't find the recording good enough; the groove was unstable.
Anyway; a while ago I was asked by film maker Craig Kuehne if he could use it in his new movie which I accepted. And since he promptly wanted this version and none else, I thought maybe it isn't that bad anyway.
(Cragis introduction can be read in this forum thread)
And! .. If anyone of you listening recognise the theme from somewhere, please tell me!
Untill then I'll keep it posted .. :-)

Well, it's a funny thing... &mdash 11/07/06 - 07:58:10 AM
....interesting to listen and to reflect... I think your playing has simply grown since you first recorded this... To my ears, I'd say you've 'come into your own' as a performer...
The only thing this one reminds me of, at all, is the old 'Fishin' Blues' such as was done by Taj Mahal or John Sebastian... But it's not exact by any means, it just has similarities...
Congratulations on your deepening connection to the indie film industry. I think your tunes have a nice visual quality to them that well suits them to this sort of application.... I find that I imagine things when I'm listening.... And they tend to have a sort of narrative, repetion-with-variations structure, that also fits with storytelling...
There's something very sweet and friendly about this picture, that suits the performance. You look like a dad grinning at his son in the living room...

haha &mdash 11/07/06 - 11:52:21 AM
Haha! .. yes you shrink; that IS a dad lookin at his son in the living room! .. bet you see all though us poor unsuspecting macjammers ;-) Yes it is my son (macjamer Mackie) who is holding the camera .. in our living room.
Thank you also for an nice analysis of my evolvement - seriously I like it.
Think (and hope) it hit quite on the nail too!

motel 6? &mdash 11/07/06 - 01:09:30 PM
listening to this song reminds me of a
song from a commercial, I'm thinking
motel 6. as far as i got seeing if
that's what your song is similar to is that
the guy that wrote their song was Tom Faulkner.
maybe someone else might know more.

Never no more? &mdash 11/07/06 - 02:34:42 PM
The introductory theme sounded familiar to me as well. I haven't been able to find anything exactly like it, though it resembles the Blind Blake tune "Never Happen No More" as played by Jorma Kaukonen (MIDI file here: http://www.stevemcwilliam.co.uk/guitar/midi/thatnevr.mid). Not exactly the same, but definitely a similar vibe and a few similar licks.
Very enjoyable nonetheless. It's always a pleasure to hear you play. [ Reply to This ]

Lillebjoern... &mdash 11/07/06 - 03:39:16 PM
This reminds me a bit of Lillebjoern Nilsens song 'stilleste gutt paa sovesal 1'. Not quite all the details, but there may be some similar parts:)
But I wouldn't bother... this has more ragtime and has it's own distinctive feature. I would think this is a kind of traditional way of playing rag, and that no one really would direct you to one exact melody that have all your features.
If you're not familiar with this Norwegian artist, which also is a great guitarplayer, you can read about him here: http://www.lillebjorn.no/.
His albums is also available in iTunes. [ Reply to This ]

This is the first tune of yours I heard back in 2004 and it just blew me away.
Perfection, in my book.

It turns out it's physically impossible to listen to this without sway-bouncing back and forth in your chair. I didn't think the original song could be improved, but I'm happy to be proven wrong! [ Reply to This ]
