Off the Tracks

Times have been more than lean,
the job just hasn't paid for much,
and the weather is going to break our backs,
on we go off the tracks.

Had to turn to this life,
of taking things that weren't all mine,
just the money, just the guns
the rest I leave behind.

Three a week I pushed my luck,
helps to keep the furnace on
keeps us all from catching sick,
rings and silver candle sticks.

Out somewhere on Potter's road,
I saw a rich man's home a lit,
The wind it seemed to call to me,
don't you try to break it in.

My hear was pounding out my chest,
I could feel the passion through the walls,
Slip the lock and crept inside,
looking for a spot to hide.

Silently I moved around,
looking for that pot of gold,
down the hall, from the back
I heard a lovers scream.

I knew the voice,
it spoke to me,
It was my love,
my very own.

She was in an others arms,
I felt my blood run cold.

Had to turn to this,
turn into this,
I'm so off the tracks
Off the tracks

Off the tracks
Still boiling mad
Alive with love
I once had

Nice sound
I like the sound of this. It's gotta a nice dark edge to it. I really love the slide sound and how it's placed in the mix. Is that a keyboard? The vocals are well performed and at a good level. I personally don't like acoustics going through amps. I just love how a well mic'd acoustic sounds. If you can get your hands on a good condenser, I highly recommend micing the guitars. That said, I think you have a fine production here.

Thanks
Thanks for all the nice comments. The slide is all done on the keyboard. Yes, that was quite accurate for you to notice the acoustic sound. Since I started doing this I've had terrible trouble getting a good acoustic sound from my set-up, but I recently got a new amp that should help and will soon get some new mics.

A Story Song
I been going down the list looking for a story song. You know, one where the lyrics tell a sequence of events. The only exception being that there could be no description of someone's appearance -- nothing like "She was tall and cool, poured in them jeans of blue."

Story songs are the best songs, and I believe that the first songs ever sung were likely story songs. The "talking blues" was once a common form. It's too bad that story songs now seem to be a lost art. Maybe it's because of amplified music, and no one can hear the lyrics in the din, but for whatever reason, I've listened to about fifty songs here before finding this one.

It's a fine song. Not that many of the others I listened to weren't fine also, but this one's much better because it's a story song. 'Course, the playing and singing were tops as well, which added to the effect.
