Description:
Some southern-fried rockin’ blues.
‘Sitting in’ is Tobin James Meuller on Hammmond organ.
Tobin is absolutely ‘smokin’ on this one, folks.
I play lead, rhythm, bass guitars and GB drums.
A little about the tune:
I went for a big Texas sound on guitars, a real gritty organ, and a mix of big-time rock drums with a dash of dixie/zydeco-flavored drumming in the drum break solo.
Compositionally, it sarts in the key of A, with a heavy bass and rhythm guitar pentatonic riff backing. After the drum break, it modulates up the scale, then back down, and ends on A sharp... Don’t know why. It just turned out that way.
Sorry, no long, drawn out guitar solos. I was having too much fun working around the melody.
Hope you like!
Thanks so much, Tobin, for sharing your talent! YOU DA MAN!
This one goes out to Dave Pollard, a.k.a. Stratcat51.
Hardware:
One slow iMac 800 Mhz, one beat-up Fender Strat, one M-Audio Mobile Preamp, and one M-Audio 49e Keystation.
Software:

F'ing bad ass guys!! Way to lay the Drum track too... I know how it is an it caan be a real pain sometimes tryin to work it all out it GB... Congrats on a Bitchin' Track!! [ Reply to This ]
About the drum track &mdash 11/10/06 - 02:07:19 PM
Yeah, man. I played the drum solo over and over and over, until I got it the way I wanted.
It took a number of drum tracks to blend the various drums and cymbals. To keep the GB file size small, I pasted the various drum parts into a main drum fills track. Since the drums and cymbals are assigned different keys, they didn't paste on top of each other. They weaved nicely into place. I ended up with one rhythm drum track and one fills track.
Another trick I came up with was to tap out a fill, rhythm change or solo on the 2 snare keys, then select and drag the note onto which ever cymbal or drum I had in mind. This saved me tons of time trying hit the right key, especially if it was a stretch for me on the keyboard.

Thanks for the Big Texas endorsement.
My wife and I were in Louisiana about 8 years ago and a New Orleans cab driver shared a Texas opinion about folks in Louisiana.
He said, "They eat things that wiggle!"
We're overdue for a trip down your way.

screamin &mdash 11/10/06 - 10:25:15 AM
roadhouse blues. no need for the chicken wire. this is the nuts. TJM plays the B3 like its an appendage. The drum tracking was excellent (not easy to do), and of course the guitar stylings were spot on. [ Reply to This ]

Tobin, curious to know how you mic'd that bad boy. Nice clean sound. [ Reply to This ]
Hey KTB &mdash 11/10/06 - 09:43:38 PM
I don't know if Tobin palyed an actual Hammond, but it sure sounds like the real deal. I'll let him clear that up. If I need to, I'll change the wording in the song art. It is definitely the Hammond sound.

Then again... &mdash 11/12/06 - 12:23:34 AM
... it could be an actual Hammond. I just saw Los Lonely Boys tonightt and their keyboardist played a table-top (or rack) version of a Hammond organ.
On top of the Hammond sat an M-Audio keyboard.
I'm used to seeing the console Hammond B3 version complete with foot pedals and stops accompanied by a Leslie amp.
Looks like Hammond has diversified.

Hey, thanks for the great comments. Much appreciated!

Scorp, they make astounding gear. Nothing beats it with a big Lesle rotating speaker cab. awesome comes to mind [ Reply to This ]
I just read an article &mdash 11/13/06 - 05:57:36 PM
They were comparing the real deal to emulating software. During the evaluation they ended up having to repair some of the vintage equipment which ended up costing a lot of money. Due to maintenance issues they came to the realization that the emulators were pretty accurate and much less expensive. [ Reply to This ]
expensive fer sure &mdash 11/17/06 - 08:29:32 AM
but the mere act of a rotating drum and horn (spinning opposite form each other) creates a physical ambient sound that an emulator simply cannot match. Besides expensive they're HEAVY :-0 [ Reply to This ]
ROCKIN! &mdash 11/10/06 - 12:45:52 PM
slammin track guys! nice job with everything, especially the drum track. Energy all the way through. Love the guitar melody...wow...a guitar player that actually plays singable phrases...a true rarity these days. Fun jam from beginning to end. Thoroghly enjoyed this! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Ray! &mdash 11/10/06 - 04:24:49 PM
... our Stereocratic Host.
I don't know if there's an official term for it. I think of it as a melodic hook, for what you lyricists call a lyrical hook in a song.

Oh YEAH, FINE Chops! Roadhouse PRIME Stuff, Goin' On!
Could stand for another 2.2 dB at the 5K plus Level on the AIFF that You're going to send to Me, EH??!!
Just Dreaming.
GROOVIN', Boys. Groovin'!
Thank You. Good Night!

FORGOT! &mdash 11/11/06 - 02:32:10 PM
I FORGOT! That's Not a Live Drummer!
WHAT a Great Kit Track. Thought it was Delbert McClinton's Drummer, who just happened by, of Something.
Used to be a Down bunch of Jammers in Connecticut, Eight To The Bar, who could get a Corpse to Dance with this Stuff. Really Reminds me of it.

This is some really tight stuff here... been waiting to hear something coming from your way for a while and I guess this just goes to prove that good things come to those who wait. Big Skynrd fan, here. I was brief friends with a guy who was from Jacksonville FL and knew guys in .38 Special and a band called Austin Nichols. I'm going back some 25+ years, now - when I was in the military.
Those were some memorable days and the music still holds up well. I think its obvious in this tune.

See, it just sounds like FUN! &mdash 11/14/06 - 11:16:07 PM
Reminds me of some of those ZZ Top things with Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons laughing and playing back to back... except with keyboards... and just the tiniest bit of that old Molly Hatchett 'Flirtin' With Disaster'... except that I got really tired of that, and I'm really enjoying this...
Really something how the Hammond adds so much without getting complicated... And how the guitar stays simple and sounds so great...

Man,I can't believe those are GB drums - you've got 'em sounding really, well- real! Nice pacing and rhythm change-ups. Tobin, holy smokes - nice riffin' package! Scorp, you've really got some hellfire guitar going on here - this is a tight piece that knows exactly what it wants to say and how. I'd love to hear it punched up in the bass department more, more bone-rattling, because this is such a slammin' jam of a workout. It almost sounds too "polite" to be boogieing you like it does. Wouldn't change a note - this is really smokin! [ Reply to This ]
Totally fun &mdash 12/01/06 - 10:56:24 AM
I had a great time playing on this one. Thanks for the chance. I hope everyone one turns it up nice and loud to listen, I know I did while playing. I dig the wood sign on the song art, too (altho I spell my last name MUELLER...) I imagined a cartoon sequence to this, with lots of running around. In fact, I just read YOU SHALL KNOW OUR VELOCITY and thought it could be a good background to some of the scenes. Jam on, guys, and thanks again for including me. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Tobin &mdash 12/02/06 - 01:40:16 PM
...for collaborating on this one. I knew you would rock the house. It was just a matter of giving you a tune so you could cut loose. I glad this tune was up to the task.
You definitely threw on some extra hickory on the smoke house fire on this one.
Much honored and olbliged.
E:)
I will fix the typo in your name.

Thanks for the respelling of the name on the song art. Another idea: use tobin and/or TobinMueller as a keyword, then it will coincide with other songs I have played on. Keep "hangin' and bangin'" as you used to say! [ Reply to This ]
