Keywords:
singer's (1)prayer (16)
Description:
a capella multi-harmony tuneful prayer inspired by early morning traffic on route to a stupid job, with lousy music on the radio, and probably not quite enough coffee. The other singers are Brian Middleton and Brice Buchanan.

Lyrics:
give me bird song in the morning
give me silence after snow
give me strumming in the evening
the sounds my true heart knows,
the sounds my true heart knows

give me dancing in the doorway,
give me singing at the stove,
give me laughter in the traffic
give me lightness for the road,
give me lightness for the road

give me a hammer for the building
give me an axe for the tearing down
give me plaster for the mending
give me a home the world around
give me a home the world around

this is beautiful. your voices are not only all soulful and serene but blend in a wonderful way much greater than their sum. Speechless..a truly remarkable recording. kudo's on a great mix/production.

Aw, shucks. &mdash 11/10/06 - 11:25:07 PM
Thanks, John. I love singing with those guys. Always one of those "greater than the sum of its parts" experiences. I'll see if I can find Brian to pass along the compliments on his engineering work.

The day long-looked-for finally arrives! And you couldn't have picked a better song to debut with....

I have actually taken this recording to designer/engineer Dave Moulton's studio with Ziti, to listen on his huge Beolab monitors... It's my standard for a great recording...

It's also a helluva song, one that still gets to me and knocks me for a loop whenever I hear it... Great writing and great singing...

I am just bouncing off the walls with joy...

Welcome (again) to MacJams!

wow &mdash 11/10/06 - 11:24:30 PM
Nice stuff, amazing how you can bring out so much music with no instruments other than the vocals.

Thanks Ed for emailing me about this.

I think when I was young when I heard TV shows like Wyatt Erp, Johnny Uma etc that had opening theme vocal music. I really got hooked on how incredibly neat the voice is. So in away I think music like this brings me back to my love of voice even when I didn't think I wanted to play a musical instrument.
Phyllis this is top notch stuff!
This type of music enables tremendous reflection capabilities for me.
Very impressed!

Bill,
Thanks for your comments. I love the voice! I'd always wanted to write something for voice alone. It took being stuck in a car in a traffic jam to do it!

Welcome, Phyllis. I truly hope you'll post more music here as I think you'll find you'll meet quite a few people who have already become fans of your music via Ed. I LOVE your voice.

Hey all,
I feel a little behind, here, not having had the time to listen to anybody else's stuff yet. It's seeming to take the better part of an eon to play things via my weeny dial-up connection, so please be patient, I'll get there. Looking forward to hearing your stuff.

Fantastic &mdash 11/10/06 - 11:43:45 PM
This is gorgeous. You have a strong, clear voice that felt like enough until the harmony kicked in. Then it becomes 'blow me away' territory. Wow.

Yeah! Glad you liked that moment. Me, too. That was one of those times I just sat back and let my jaw drop at my good fortune to have such people as Brian and Brice singing with me. What a total gas!

Thanks for commenting and listening.

Phyllomania is here... &mdash 11/11/06 - 12:04:49 PM
Another wave of the Boston music invasion. And this one, this song... so beautiful. Phyllis, I just love what I am hearing. You easily capture and equal, with your vocal harmonies, the rich texture of singing one can hear in the first CS&N album (easily one of my all-time favs). I want to dwell and pause at each moment of song in this hymn... so rich and warm.

Welcome.

God bless,

..AMAZING and sung with such GRACE!

I was kinda hoping to hear Garrison Keillor follow with one of his Lake Wobegon tales. This is worthy of one his stage performances.

I think he should hear this.

Amazing &mdash 11/14/06 - 05:21:00 AM
There's no amount of production that can match the emotional power of a good voice, as this shows, and when the other voices begin to blend with yours, well, it's just sublime.Just one question: Did you record this singing together, or one voice at a time? The way you start and finish each phrase so perfectly in sync with one another makes me think it must have been recorded with the three of you singing together with lots of eye contact, but the perfection of the sound and intonation makes me wonder if you somehow did this seperately. Either way, it's astounding.

[ Reply to This ]
We sang it... &mdash 11/14/06 - 10:34:55 PM
together, having tried the overdub route and found we just couldn't get the consonants to end up in the same places. Plus, we were used to performing it together, so we decided to just go for it and sang our little hearts out right there in the studio.

And then we loaded on the reverb, which seemed to work just fine.

I used to think it sounded way too wet, but every time I hear it, that just doesn't stick out at all, so I've conceded that my bandmates and were right, and there's just nothing new there!

Thanks for your comments. Glad you liked it.
