Description:
Focus on de-midiing in this version:
Midi drums replaced by DoD drums,
real bass,
real el. guitar,
real Tambourine even.
Added:
organ in verses
some more el. guitar
Structure:
tried to build a bit in the intro - to lesson the immediacy and "in your face-ness" .. lol
working still on getting back to intro at end (this is first attempt at that - suggestions welcome, as I'm not happy with it myself).

Lyrics:
Intro/Outro
Sitting back apon Phil's sofa,
I think of things hardly remembered:
Fluffy clouds rolling by in a clear blue sky,
In the school by the side of the red blaize pitch in Park Rd,
What I saw was that a change would come,
And mold 'til old into what I've become,
But for that moment I would just enjoy,
The quiet comfort of God's greatest toys ...
v1
At school they hit you with rules,
And rulers if your fingers hung over the desk - ah
Please Miss! Cry? ...
Push hard but what do you get?
Much to remember but forget ..
Cry?
Push hard but what do you get?
Much to remember but ...
Chorus
Can I cry now?
Like I did then ..
No - I don't think so - no

Great &mdash 11/12/06 - 05:55:47 AM
Wow this is a busy song eh? Kitchen sink in there too haha....really great performance on all instruments. I love those little descending guitar arpeggios you have in there...how do you do that?
Well this is a very good track indeed...you seem to be comfortable with 'the studio'

Cheers Steve .. &mdash 11/13/06 - 04:16:04 AM
..now where did I put that kitchen sink sample? ;o)
perhaps it's too busy? I think a bit too .. I agree with
Tobin but I also want the song to retain a 'sudden
impact' aspect in the intro as well as building a bit ..
the guitar is all played capo 2nd fret and to get that
effect, I just play all chords from F shape down to C
shape with a controlled down stroke strum- it's pretty
quick and I used the best of a few takes if I recall.

put together &mdash 11/12/06 - 08:59:23 AM
great composition I like all the changes Your singing is good I enjoyed it .I would mabey use less horn but besides that an excellent mix. Great job with all the instruments [ Reply to This ]
Too horny! &mdash 11/13/06 - 04:25:31 AM
... lol couldn't resist .. Thanks for stopping by ..
Got a mixed bag of feeling on the horns .. when you say less, do you mean use more sparingly (or remove) or just bring down in mix?
Normally, I wouldn't touch brass with a long pole in my
stuff (and most solo trumpeting makes me giggle) .. but
for this I think it adds a bit of happy clappy to the
proceedings ..

hey My freind ...great song ...you realy
did a huge job here ...your voice is very
cool ...you give this song alot ..and it
turn a real master piece of yours ..
well done !! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks &mdash 11/13/06 - 04:35:04 AM
.. always glad you stopped by .. yup it was a labour of
love this song .. always had trouble doing it justice
(I felt) - of course, there should be more verse lyrics and
the outro lyrics should also be different .. hence v3 and
not final (and no download option).
The singing was the first thing to 'get right' for this
it was crucial to experiment first with different keys to
get the one that pushed me in the verses, could manage the
harmonies in the chorus and didn't sound too low in the intro/outro bits. This was the best I could do .. lol.

Sweet! &mdash 11/13/06 - 11:12:20 AM
Man this is some good constructive progression! Outstanding song structure. The harmony of the vocals right off the bat and then to build it into the rest of the song. It has a great feel through and through and the horns, nice touch. Thanks for sharing.

the structure has been the subject of much discussion in one of the bands I've
played in that attempted this .. so much so .. it never made it out of
rehearsal and I've always wanted to try this 'last' known structure .. which
we hadn't quite mastered playing. Glad you liked that aspect.

Really... &mdash 11/13/06 - 02:05:11 PM
....good song here. The production and performance are just excellent. It all sounds really tight. Love the horn and drums. Your vocals are top notch. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks alot .. &mdash 11/23/06 - 03:39:10 PM
.. a fair bit of time went into the vocals on this. The drums themselves are
based on the old drummers performance and re-vamped with DoD - so
most credit should really go to him.
The horns were (as Haribo put it before) a rather 'whimsical' addition ..
Most things are quite tight but the bass is a bit behind I've since noticed in the
verses .. something to fix ;o)

Very well done &mdash 11/16/06 - 12:59:57 PM
This was an enjoyable listen. A lot going on but, extremely well put together. Like how everything flowed. The horns even sounded good! The only gripe I have is the acoustic guitar sound. More of a personal pet peeve of mine rather than a knock on your playing/recording of it. I just have a hard time with piezo pickups. I am of the school that the only way to get a good acoustic guitar sound is to mic it up. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for popping in .. &mdash 11/23/06 - 03:47:35 PM
.. I can appreciate the love/hate thing .. I actually am from the school (were
you get your fingers hit by rulers? .. no ..) .. where was I .. I like the sound
of acoustics recorded through mics as well .. I might try that with my APX .. but
I like a bit of chi-chingy/percussive sound .. I'd prefer to use a different acoustic
and mic it for my song 'You make me feel' for example .. but .. unless I
win the lottery or my mate 'T-towel the purchaser of fine instruments' lets me
borrow something he buys.. I'll have to make do with what I have for now ..
I can say it was a fab guitar to use live .. such a warm sound through a desk ..
no feedback and it's a nice model to play.

Good One! &mdash 12/05/06 - 04:08:06 PM
Nice arrangement and sound quality. I think you have something really nice happening without adding any more tracks - lol.
The lyrics are interesting and kind of take me all over the place.
I like it.

Hey Apb, &mdash 01/18/07 - 01:54:40 PM
I think this song really kicks off just after that 1st verse. The vocals give me a Collective Soul feel, have you heard them? Horns are rockin' keys and acoustics, good stuff here bud-MJG [ Reply to This ]
Thanks alot MJG &mdash 01/18/07 - 02:28:55 PM
.. glad you liked this. The plan is for it to 'take off' after the 'intro' (which I think your calling verse 1) and
that part is re-cycled at the end - so I try to both 'set the scene' and then return as if in a cycle to the beginning at the end. If I'd added the different outro lyrics it might have been more evident .. doh .. thanks for the Collective Soul comparison (I only heard a little of them from my X wifes CD collection many years after I wrote this and if I recall they
weren't half bad - good vocals, so I take anything remotely positive about my vocals as a compliment ;o) - any song in particular you had in mind I wonder?). I think of the verse starting at the take off - and the chorus as the "Can I .." bit ... the horns were the only 2006 addition to the pretty much otherwise written, arranged tune - glad you liked them, it's always a bit love/hate thing with stabby brass .. I did a minor little work on them since in fact (audio loops added with the Gb soft instrument sounds - just as an experiment to see if it improved them any). I won't re-post it until I've really completed it. (eg. sing the different outro lyrics). Oh, this was a long response ;o) sorry about that!
Thanks again. [ Reply to This ]
