Description:
This is a children's song that I've had in an unfinished state for a very long time. It didn't need too much work to finish it, so I grabbed a little time on a Sunday night to do so.

The vocals are all me. The spoken 'monster' bits in the bridge use a vocal effect, but the rest are just me singing. It's all a little chaotic, which is how I wanted it. Chaos is fun when you're singing about monsters. I'm hoping the kids will join in and sing along with me.

Lyrics:
When monsters smash your toes
You have to bite their nose
Don't think you have no chance
When monsters want to dance

Not all monsters are clumsy
Some dance quite divine
But if they trip and stumble
Take that as a sign!

When monsters smash your toes
You have to bite their nose
Don't think you have no chance
When monsters want to dance

If you can't find a monster
Who's graceful as can be
You need to go a'searching
For a dancing fantasy!

When monsters smash your toes
You have to bite their nose
Don't think you have no chance
When monsters want to dance

The oafs are in your closet
The bumbling under your bed
The klutzes hide in shadows
Have the graceful ones all fled?

When monsters smash your toes
You have to bite their nose
Don't think you have no chance
When monsters want to dance

I'm "carred' &mdash 11/13/06 - 11:06:51 AM
I could see how this could scare a young one a bit but you managed some satire to relive this stress. I loved the tuba... is that a tuba? Great story book feel. Thanks for sharing.

Yup, that's a tuba! As a friend pointed out, being a little bit scared is fun when you're a kid. I'm just hoping no one is a lot scared. It's all in fun, of course.

very fun, Shel! &mdash 11/13/06 - 11:44:20 AM
For some reason, this reminds me of something Shel Silverstein would write (definitely a compliment.) Very quirky/smirky fun poem, and equally quirky and delightful/appropriate music! Although, I had to listen a couple of times before I realized that that was not the JoannaBrass, but a RealBrass thingie :-) One critique... I LOVED the orchestration and the singing, it all fit so nicely, except, the cymbal crash was loud, and across the same frequency range and centered over the voice, so when things got loud, your words got temporarily drowned out. This is where mixing skill way beyond mine might be helpful... but you might try panning the cymbal more to one side (or double it and pan each copy to the far left and right, to move it out of the way of your voice). Also, you may want to use the equalizer on it to drop the volume of the high midrange a ways (I think.) That way your voice will still shine through the crescendo there. Very very fun, I like the klumsy feel of this very carefully put-together piece!

Drakonis

Unfortunately, I can't do much with the cymbal because the loop was an orchestra kit (it included all the percussion in that section). Because I wanted those wonderful, pounding drums to be upfront because they seemed so monsterish, the cymbals are tagging along. I figured it was okay because the very first time I sing the chorus, I sing it solo with just the tuba, so that way one can hear the words.

This was really great Joanna! Orchestrated gradiosity (loved it!), clever lyrics, funny voices... you make some great tunes. Still a big fan, yours truly!

Children's songs are the most fun to write. First dancing aliens and now dancing monsters. Who knows what'll be dancing next?

I still have our second collab on the "to do" list!

I'm looking forward to it. I tend to take so long to do things that patience is not a problem.

Very, very effective orchestration, Joanna, and the flow of the song is just right.

Plus, it's approximately *way* fun.

This is a complete success.

I had so much fun in chat talking to all of you guys. It was so great to see the kids in all of us come out and dance with the monsters. Thank you so much for your kind words.

Oh no! If you're bumbling under your bed then you must be... a... a... MONSTER! Well, at least we know you're a pink and fluffy monster with an English accent (I had to represent, y'know).

Oh, as the mother of a young one I love this. I get sick of the same old "bananaphone" over and over.
My daughter would enjoy, will have to play for her. She has a demented sense of humor just like I do. Nice work.

I hope your daughter enjoyed the song. That's always the true test of a kid's song -- the kids!

I could actually envision the monsters dancing! The instrument selection is spot on for this also.

Sugar plums are out and monsters are in for things than dance in your head. Thanks for the kind words!

Hey! I thought I left a comment! &mdash 11/17/06 - 10:49:48 AM
Aaargh.

Joanna, you already heard a lot out of me on Chat, but I just love this... still...

I've had a week of it at work, so I haven't walked my son in to hear it, but I haven't forgotten...

I still love the tuba, and I love the Monster Tabernacle Joanna Choir... all those voices... all with great diction....

I appreciate your dropping again and for telling The Peep! I love "Monster Tabernacle Choir" and wish I'd used that in the liner notes.

I like the part when you say, "When monsters smash your toes, You have to bite their nose, Don't think you have no chance, When monsters want to dance". I like the idea that it's about monsters.

Sincerely,

I appreciate you coming in to listen. I had that chorus in my head for too long. It was only embarrassing when I was singing it at the grocery store.

Powerful stuff! &mdash 11/20/06 - 06:41:05 AM
Amazing stuff Joanna! "Proper music"! Unbelievably good sounds you have here - so real and so full. Excellent singing and writing (and talking). Bloody scary to me : )
As ziti would say: "deepest bow"!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I have to thank some jampack loops for the 'proper music'. Sometimes those loops just beg for a song to be written around them. And sometimes it's just due to dancing monsters.

I truely love this song! Your vocal performance is stunning. I even imagined of dancing in forest. Why dont you make video and throw it in public??

Too bad my kids are not little any more. But I can imagine Dad (or Mom) singing this song to take away the scare out of the closet's monster!
