Description:
Great Expectations was written for my 4th grandchild, Vincent on the occasion of his birth in April '06. To me, the music is filled with tentative steps as it inches toward its concluding exuberance...full of hope and dreams, full of expectations for what the future will hold, but knowing that something bright and wonderful awaits.
Lyrics:
a song-without-words, but with a programme
Hardware:
Roland keyboard and sound mods
Software:
Roland Sound mods, Garritan Personal Orchestra (ob., fl., hrn)

Just Awesome! &mdash 11/13/06 - 11:19:35 PM
Your ability to create such emotional soundscapes is just awesome! I could feel this piece in a movie like the Secret of Roan Inish.
Listening to your expressions makes me feel like such a hack! But it's inspirational at the same time!
Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thank you so much for your positive comments. I'm glad the number was pleasant...Hey, you should see the stuff in my trash bin! Sometimes a number works, sometimes it doesn't. There are no "favorites" here. Only a bunch of writers all hacking away and trying to find someone to listen. It's all great fun that doesn't have us giving up our day jobs. So, let's enjoy. Thanks again. I hope you'll catch a few other things I've uploaded.

One of the amazing things to me, Paul... &mdash 11/14/06 - 08:16:13 AM
...is the way you get such heart and intimacy out of electronic instruments...
You can always hear the human behind the playing...
This is a very touching piece, an heirloom....

Electronic Instruments &mdash 11/14/06 - 07:13:27 PM
Thanks a lot for your nice comments. You know, about 25 years ago I bought my first electronic keyboard, an Alpha Syntauri -- a little unit backed by Steve Wozniak that could actually remember what I played and then print it out on a dot matrix printer. Only problem was that the "rendition" was so horrible that I couldn't even begin to transcribe it. Ever since then I have been searching for the perfect digital instruments that I could actually afford to own. I have a few good ones and don't really fiddle with them much. It seems like the mix is where all the finesse comes from. Sometimes I am lucky; other times it's just frustration. But I keep trying to find the right mixture of sound that is simple, but evocative. I have a long way to go to be perfect in the recording arena, but all the new toys is sure making the composition a lot of fun. Thanks a lot for your positive response to my music.

Wow, such a wonder! &mdash 11/14/06 - 09:09:28 AM
Paul, the emotion that you put into your compositions and your playing is simply wonderful. I've added your pieces to a special iTunes playlist I created with artists such as John Tesh, Chopin, and Beethoven.
God bless,
Rick

Roll the Credits &mdash 11/14/06 - 11:56:47 AM
This mellow, incidental music reminds me of what one would hear while the credits are rolling at the end of a movie. The episodic nature of this material, going from one idea to another without repeating, is perfect for this.
You have a gift for lush orchestrations. The balance and panning amongst the instruments is excellent.
There seemed to be some very minor timing issues around mid-way through the piece, with the piano and strings not quite lining up in spots. The string sound was good, but with a bit too much echo; the quicker notes almost blurred into one another.
That being said, you have indeed created a pleasant mood here, a nice ambience. [ Reply to This ]

Comforting &mdash 11/15/06 - 04:35:22 PM
Your tender feeling for your grandchild and all he means to you are eloquently expressed here. I could almost see your dreams of him becoming a man and setting out on his great journey. A few hints of occasional strife but your hopeful outlook sets the tone and all will be well. Lovely piece Paul. [ Reply to This ]
wow &mdash 11/16/06 - 08:44:47 PM
absolutely pro sounding. Worthy of its own marquee. A beautiful sounding composition. Fab job on the strings, and the lead instruments. Coaching that from synths is awfully impressive [ Reply to This ]

What they said. How you get the notes to emit such feeling is truly amazing... Wonder-ful. [ Reply to This ]
