Description:
Mississippi Riverboat Queen was written and recorded 30 years ago in Rota, Spain on a Teac reel-to-reel tape deck. I don't remember what the occasion was or what inspired me to write it. It is one of many songs I wrote and recorded back then that I was recently able to capture off the old tapes.
Both my singing and guitar playing are on one track, so I wasn't able to do much to clean it up. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy it.
Lyrics:
Mississippi Riverboat Queen
The water’s still runnin’, and the bees are still buzzin’,
But the grandeur of the river is a dream.
For the riverboat is gone now, her lights are all shut down now,
She’s no longer to be seen.
Gone are the gay nights, and all of the bright lights,
And all the splendor of life’s cream.
Now as I sit and think of her, my eyes mist up and tear for her,
My Mississippi riverboat queen.
Time to stop dreamin’, of riverboat steamin’,
And get back to life, here and now.
But I’ll never forget her, she’ll be in my thoughts forever,
My Mississippi riverboat queen.
My Mississippi riverboat queen.

great find! &mdash 11/14/06 - 11:55:44 AM
Thanks for digging this tape up! Very nostalgic pretty song, and great guitar picking and singing. When I was 16, I took a trip up the Mississippi on the "Mississippi Queen" paddleboat's older smaller cousin, the "Delta Queen" (http://www.cruisemates.com/articles/reviews/deltaqueen/delta.cfm)... and it was wonderful... this song captures some of the slow pace and longing for time's gone by. THank you for sharing this!

You're welcome Drak! Glad you liked the song. I tried to find a decent picture of the Mississippi Queen, but the best I could find was the American Queen, pictured above. All three are close sisters though.
God bless,
Rick

Nostalgic... &mdash 11/14/06 - 12:43:46 PM
for the peaceful, gentle days on the old rever bank. (not that I've ever seen the Mississippi) but the song captured the feelings well. :-) [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Roxy. I've been to the Mississippi, but never on a riverboat. Guess the feeling was imagination. :-)
God bless,
Rick

You're welcome Scotty. Thank you for the compliment. I'm glad you enjoyed this historical piece, as I've enjoyed many of yours. I bet workin' the ole Mississipp was a lot of fun. Was it around the time I wrote this?

Thanks Feter, and you are welcome for the trip down memory lane. You should have seen me when I got my hands on a reel-to-reel tape deck and played that tape for the first time in 30 years. The flood of memories was almost overpowering.
God bless,

Hey Rick &mdash 11/20/06 - 01:20:02 PM
Once a year, I go to Indiana and camp with several great bluegrass players.. and they know every song... and we play all night around a campfire, all through the week... so I've developed an ear for what is genuine and classic... and I can hear this being performed there... these guys only pull out the ones that stand the test of time
great song [ Reply to This ]
Hey Scott &mdash 11/20/06 - 03:52:26 PM
What a very cool compliment! Made me smile big time. :-) This is one that was a lot of fun to write and perform. Here it is 30 years later and I still love it. :-)
Thanks again and God bless,
Rick

Hi Charlie! &mdash 11/20/06 - 06:22:14 PM
Thanks for the nice words. Glad you liked it. Wish I could play and sing like that now! :-) But, alas, the aging process has taken its toll.

Very Nice &mdash 11/27/06 - 01:10:17 AM
I loved this piece, you know there is such a Spanish folk sound to the guitar, it reminds of some of the classical major key Spanish works and the Alegrias of flamenco. Well done, great finger picking and great job singing.

Hey Ian! &mdash 11/27/06 - 08:54:47 AM
I am honored that you stopped by to have a listen, and I'm very pleased that you enjoyed it. I have other folk songs that I wrote and recorded with the Martin 30 years ago that I'll be posting now and then.
I'll be looking for more of your fantastic work, while I work on new material.
Thanks again and God bless,
Rick

Wonderful! &mdash 02/04/07 - 07:12:15 PM
Nothing new to add, but I'll repeat that you have a beautiful, expressive voice, and with a voice like that, a gentle, simple guitar accompaniment is all you need to create wonderful music. [ Reply to This ]
Re: Wonderful! &mdash 02/13/07 - 11:39:12 AM
Thank you Clark! I must remind you though, the voice you hear in this track is from 30-some years ago. It ain't the same now... :-))
God bless,
Rick

Hey Rick, &mdash 02/28/07 - 09:29:50 AM
gotta love that Martin! I played for years with a fella who played one and it sounded very similar. When the song first started I was reminded of Billy Joe Shaver by your vocal style; that's a style I've always admired. For one track it sure sounds sweet. I identified well with the line "get back to life, here and now". Easy to wrap one's self up in nostalgia, more challenging to make the here and now pleaseant too. Thanks for making my here and now more pleaseant with this track.
Keep working on that Alvarez; they're not half-bad either ;-) [ Reply to This ]
Hi Joe, &mdash 03/01/07 - 08:32:42 AM
I always did love my Martin. :-) I don't know who Billy Joe Shaver is, but thank you for the compliment. Yes, looking back can be nostalgic, warm and fuzzy, but very dangerous too, if you stay there. Therefore, we need to strive to focus on where our feet are planted and where they are headed.
I'm thrilled that you liked this piece! :-)
God bless,
