Description:
Big box, little box.
Lyrics:
v1
My head aches,
I'm sure you'll find what you want in your morning paper,
But at least I have -
I'm sure you'll get what you needed a minute later,
If you ask they'll know,
If you know what you want you'll get it,
An' if you ask they'll know,
That I want to be me alone.
Chorus
I'll sit it out,
'Cos I want to.
v2
Time waits,
For no man on the streets ahead - so why not love her?
For at best I have
To define what I want, I guess, and not to suffer,
If you ask, who knows?
If you know what it is don't tell it,
An' if you see you'll know,
That I want to be me alone.
v3
So save me,
From myself and the worlds apathetic nature,
Complacency,
Holds me back from a lack of confidence.
An' if you push you'll lose,
If you pull you will see that it 'ain't much better,
An' if you see you'll know,
That I want to be free alone.

Very cool &mdash 11/16/06 - 07:40:35 PM
Very dynamic intro leading into a very nicely produced song. Such a good alt pop song - watch out for the groupies Alan - I can hear them outside : ) Ending maybe a little too abrupt, but tthe song is excellent, as is your performance.

Nice thing. Super nice production. Very well performed.
I'm impressed by it all. If I shold nitpick something (hope you want me to) it would be that the vocals on some places are not hitting the notes, (and guess the ending is not the final version ending).
By the way; your'e getting a great sound out of your Yamaha APX.

I liked this! Fun with that radio-distorted(?) voice and nice overall, only possibly a wee bit too much reverb or something that makes my headphones rumble a bit in a couple of places. No big deal though. Fav'd it... [ Reply to This ]
Tack så mycket .. &mdash 11/18/06 - 09:28:51 AM
.. loads of fun playing with toys. I used both heavy delay and an adjusted
standard 'Megaphone' (that's a really large telephone lol) on the vocals ..which
uses a soft amp I think for the distortion. Can you do me a favour and tell
me on what bits or lyric lines I'm maxing out your headphones .. it's not
so noticeable on my Sennheiser HD212Pro's but I think they are pretty good with bass if I recall; send me a "Note" or e-mail (if you don't want to put it this thread). I got a bit 'carried away' with Sculpture after my hearing test ..lol.

Like I said &mdash 11/18/06 - 10:15:20 AM
it's really no big deal. I listened on the speakers now and it works quite nicely. I still understand why I said it though, for my taste I think the bass line could possibly blend in more with the rest if you dropped the volume on it like one decibel or so. But I'm not the mixing expert here so do not take my word for it... It is still a great song! [ Reply to This ]

.. at work I have my older Sennheiser HD445's and I could hear quite
distinctly the buzzing in the R side caused by the bass. Thanks for making
me aware. I'll try this filter suggestion Mungo made to fix it for next version.

with guitars too. Yup the ending: I was thinking of still keeping it sudden
(with the floor toms 'bam bam' bit .. but effect them to give something to fade
out a bit with .. might work .. this was of course unfinished (ran out of time)) ..
there was alot of other delayed things that showed up annoyingly if I left it
just fade as was .. and it would have taken time I didn't have to sort that).
Glad you stopped by.

I love the intro, that bass line is exciting. Great contrast when the guitar comes in. Did you ever listen to Tonio K.? Your song reminded me of his great stuff from the early nineties. Of course, yours is a fresher approach, with the synth sounds. Nice guitar solo, by the way. I love the harmony there. This is a great pop song! [ Reply to This ]

Great pacing! &mdash 11/18/06 - 12:09:18 PM
I like the intake of breath at the beginning, followed by the catchy beat. The bass combined with the tasteful drums provide an energetic underpinning to the song.
Pacing is excellent with the gradual addition of guitar layers leading to the vocals. The guitar solo just past the middle occured at the perfect moment.
I don't know anything about the technical aspects of recording and mixing vocals, but I will say that my ears sometimes wanted more of a "live", "sparkling" vocal sound to balance the full, lush accomaniment. The vocals were almost incidental during the "busiest" moments.
But taken altogether, this is a very successful pop song, and I was particularly impressed with its pacing and combination of instruments. Great sound! [ Reply to This ]
Breathe in .. &mdash 11/23/06 - 02:52:36 PM
..breathe out ;o)... thanks for your kind words and fine comments. Vocals
I know I have loads of room for improving .. er .. like practicing would help
and trying more ways of recording, perhaps get another mic too and try two placed a bit differently .. for now I have hit one setting which I'm fairly happy with and keep using that ..lol .so for now turning a more sparkly/live sound
into a reality is a bit out of reach of my skills I'm afraid ..
I might also try a collab and get someone else to mix/EQ my vocals .. then ask
them for all the settings they used .. lol .. hmm .. that would be a nice cheat
lol. Man, I still just hate doing vocals .. this was a bit more fun as I played
a bit with effects on my efforts.

The beginning of the song is very catchy and interesting. I'm always a fan of real sounds in music. The guitar solo is great. The bass was just a bit rumbly on my headphones in places as well - maybe it will be better on the speakers. I agree that the ending is a bit abrupt. Overall, a great song - very original! Well done. glad you enjoyed it .. even though the bass I over-cooked a bit .. it is very
low and makes my head rumble a bit too, it's also meant to pulse a bit ... like the "headache" the song opens with mentioning .. the solo is one of my
'minimalist' efforts and going for mood and expression rather than how many
notes can I play in a scale per sec kindof thing .. 'cos I'm not good at that
anyway .. lol.

.. glad you liked the vocal arrangement: I was going for some sort of differentiation within one person, like two trains of thought or conscience
and sub-conscience, something you might say or something you might just
think .. that are more split at the 'headache' start and begin to merge to
one for the last verse .. either that .. or just me playing with effects .. lol.
Yeah .. that 'pop' at the end was to get the song to qualify for this genre. ;o)

..thanks for your comments - on the Vox/Fx Vox: I was going for the Fx vocals sounding a little more distant than the main vox in the verses, for the reason I mention above. I will bring 'em up a notch in v3 as I agree in the 2nd verse
they have sunk more than they should. The delayed Vox in the chorus also dip a
little in db on the first iteration (which is all that is heard normally) .. I can also
try to even that out a bit with some automation points. Well spotted and
thanks again.

Very Cool &mdash 11/23/06 - 05:34:23 AM
I like all the elements here.
Just a small production note - In a addition to what others mentioned, if you want to, you should be able to get the bass less to be less 'rumbly/woofy/blurry' if you go into logic and insert a "Channel EQ" to one of the following Factory>Miscellaneous EQ Tools>Low Cut 30 Hz or Low Cut 50 Hz or Low Cut 60 Hz (listen and choose the one that makes the bass/overall mix more clear without taking away too much of its oomph. I'm assuming here that you're using Logic for the final mix and not GarageBand. Using the Low Cut filter to add clarity to the mix is something that McBoy pointed out and taught me on a piece that we worked on together. [ Reply to This ]

in GB too if I recall correctly.. and see if I like the results .. to v3! oh ..and thanks for reading and answering my Tonio K question: I just tried iTunes (sweden store) and only found "Romeo Unchained" released 2005 material copyrighted 1986 .. and it's under genre religious ..hmm *rubs chin*.

That's Interesting &mdash 11/24/06 - 02:01:33 PM
Tonio K's Romeo Unchained is listed under Christian & Gospel in the US iTunes store and is the only one available. I think that the music is being labelled "Christian" because the record label that released the album is known for producing Christian music. He's a Christian artist in the same way an artist like Johnny Cash could be considered a Christian artist. He sometimes addresses religious themes, but it's not his focus.

As usual I'm a latecomer to the party ... I've been away from MJ for a few weeks. It's a very enjoyable song, as I've come to expect from you, and beautifully played and sung. I'm not much of a production expert (as is immediately obvious in my music) but it sounds to me like some of the elements are maxed-out in places and trying to dominate each other ... I might be inclined to subdue the mix just a little. It's good though.
I have a Yamaha APX too but mine's an 11-string. They're lovely guitars, in't they? [ Reply to This ]

.. at that time of composing this (and much of what I've

much consideration - simple, rememberable, whistle after
gig melodies. Very pleased you like my quite 'run of the mill' stuff in comparison to yours. Who knows, when I

to which I might also venture: "askew" but well they did offer 'lopsided'. I meant 'slightly wrong' or 'not quite correct' .. this 'dubious nature/quality' thing or statement
is what I think form 3. is trying (badly) to express.
.. of course it is commonly accepted to mean 'slightly inebriated'.
Indeed, "beer goggles" I believe is the effect you are refering too.

..glad you enjoyed this one too. I try to express some odd things sometimes: apathy, non-participation in a "batchelor boy", "I vant to be alone" way .. with a touch of
conscience/sub-conscience schizophrenia thrown in as a lyrical rhetoric device (perhaps megaphone wasn't the way to go .. hahaha), opening with 'yet another hangover'.. without ending up sounding like just a 'spoilt brat'... which I sometimes wonder about myself on that 'cos I want too' line. I chose that old picture as it seemed to visualise times past, when 'sitting this one out' was as popular as taking part in the sexual attraction, mating game that often is what the dance floor is about these days.
I think I will sort the ending and bring the acoustic down a smidge and make some of the other fixes mentioned to this .. er, sometime this year ;o).
btw .. I noticed you've figured out how to 'fav' songs ok by clicking the heart on the song page- did you know that to fav the artist, you just click the heart on said artists page? - then you'll appear as a "fan" of that artist for all of MJ to see .. nudge, nudge, hint, hint, say no more ;o) .. you'll also then see some options to receive e-mail notices (if you want) when they upload new songs - handy to know and I'm just kidding - don't fan me just 'cos I said.
