Description:
"Awhile back our friend Feter McBlues posted a cover of this classic song and, in my comment on his version I expressed a desire to cover it myself someday. Not long after I posted LIGHTSPAWN Vic Holman contacted me and invited me to collab with him on it. Thrilled with the dual prospect of getting to do a cover of this tune, as well as work with one of my favorite Macjammers, I immediately signed on and we got down to business. We had a lot of fun working on this one. I hope some of that energy is transmitted to our listeners!" - Amangi
"It was kind of a joke commenting on Feter's version when i said darn i was going to cover that! We'll he said he would like to hear it. It wasn't like a double dog dare but it got me to thinking about it. So there was a lot of note passing in class (we never got caught once) on how to approach this as a true collab. Definately a lot of hard work, but a most enjoyable experience to work with a good friend!" - Vic
Amagi plays the organ, bass, vocals, intro & first verse acoustic
Vic plays the electrics and additional acoustic guitars, vocals and addtional drum bits and pieces.
Lyrics:
Everybody sing along
there is a house in new orleans
they call the rising sun
and it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
and god i know i'm one
my mother was a tailor
she sewed my new blue jeans
my father was a gambling man
down in new orleans
now the only thing a gambler needs
is a suitcase and a trunk
and the only time that he's satisfied
is when he's on a drunk
oh mother tell your children
not to do what i have done
spend your lives in sin and misery
in the house of the rising sun
well i've got one foot on the platform
the other foot on the train
i'm going back to new orleans
to wear that ball and chain
well there is a house in new orleans
they call the rising sun
and its been the ruin of many a poor boy
and god i know i'm one

Man, I haven't heard this song in a while. Nice work, especially with the guitar lead and organ. This rolls along nicely. I'm glad you guys resisted the urge to make a speed metal version, which must have been very tempting. Not. Love those crazy wobbly guitars that come in halfway through, too. [ Reply to This ]
i think.... &mdash 11/17/06 - 03:49:22 PM
we were both a little woobly by the time we where done. speed metal no, neither of us where up to gargling glass. Amagi definatley played a mean organ that had me grinning the whole time.
Thanks for the listen & comments, much appreciated!

we really wanted it build and have some oomph. our vocal timbers are so different. Amagi is earthy, while mine tends to more...sky? it is interesting to hear such a difference within a song. thanks for enjoying the song its means alot!

This version is somewhat of a fusion between that of the Animals (ala Amagi) with that of Frigid Pink's 1970 acid-rock cover (ala Vic). Kind of like the regular Conan O'Brien Show feature: "If They Mated." This version is the offspring! LOL!
We really busted our hump on this. It was my first FULL collaboration with another musician and working with Vic was an energizing and educational experience for little-old-egotistical me. I'd do it again in a heart-beat! Hopefully we can find another old classic that has passed into Public Domain so we can put the old thumbscrews to it! [ Reply to This ]
Oh, yeah! &mdash 11/17/06 - 04:21:01 PM
You guys rock! You've turned a folk classic into a rockin gem. Real nice rendition, guys. It makes me want to be a rock singer.... What great guitar work!!! And the vocals are just right, too. Faved & downloaded. [ Reply to This ]

who like to rock. i think we inspired each other to really put our soul into it as we played off each other and as the song progressed. wasn't sure how this version would strike some people. but i know i had a stupid grin after listening to the final mix. i for one would like to hear you rock out!
Thanks for the nice comments!

Wonderful, just wonderful folks!
Lots of feeling! Lots of fun things happening.
Shines all way throught that you had a good time.
Well, a good time was what I had listning!
One thing that strikes me is that is getting better and better as the song goes, and it is getting more in more fun till the finale which is ending in a big happy laughter on my end. [ Reply to This ]

this was a highlight to work with amagi. his playing the organ and vocals where so inspirational to keep building up the song to a big finish. you wouldn't believe how many guitars there wher on that last chord.

Nice version guys, and it's always good to see a collab between people I admire on MJ. Not one of my favourite songs by a long shot (I've heard too many awful versions - a bit like Wild Thing and Gloria for me), but a good rendition (ah, the proper use of the "r" word!) all the same.

Very good cover. I especially enjoyed how the production/arrangement changed as the song progressed.
But my favorite version is still one I heard on a Beatles bootleg many years ago with John Lennon doing a hilarious shouting/gurgling imitation of Eric Burden. [ Reply to This ]

now wouldn't that paint a pretty picture! a tambourine or do we need more cowbell? a good chemistry developed through this song. and all the ingedients gelled. amagi really outdid himself with the keys and really worked hard to compliment the vocals and guitars. your visit and comments are always a pleasure!

Swamp Rock &mdash 11/17/06 - 11:19:34 PM
Yeah, this one sounds wonderfully funky! I can see the moss hanging down from the trees on the bank of the bayou. Nice distortion and wah on the guitars. Crazy enough that I could almost believe you were from Louisiana! [ Reply to This ]
swampy yes &mdash 11/17/06 - 11:58:22 PM
we're both as far from the deep south as you can get. in the pacific northwest its pine trees and you have to buy moss. amagi has a great earthy vocal style that really anchors this. while mines more like what you would expect from a toothless kid playing banjo on a porch. now a banjo with a wah....that could be interesting. thanks! i think the wah didn't get invented until '65 or '66, as far as i know. the use of the wah was a nod to frigid pinks version back in '70. didn't go that heavy though. to many guitars + to much distortion=mud. wanted to create variety on the guitar tones. kinda lost count on how manys in there. i think theres around 12 going in and out throughout. Thanks for coming into the house.

Thanks Harold &mdash 11/18/06 - 05:33:34 PM
i did split the vocal differently just take it somewhere else between the amagi's vocal and my own. i though amagi's sound was so down to earth it was best to keep him right in front and in your face. trying to keep a little of the unexpected thing going. thanks on the guitars. the first one i did a number of takes, just to get in the groove and tempo. all the rest where done in one or two takes, off the cuff. Thanks and may the rising sun always shine on your house. [ Reply to This ]

is a fun track. good performances all around. I've heard a lot of different versions of this song, but this one has a vibe most of the others don't. Great job...on a side note this was the first song I ever learned, I've been planning on recording a version of this myself, somehow I keep putting it off... [ Reply to This ]
same story here! &mdash 11/20/06 - 03:01:22 PM
this was the first song i learned way back. kept thinking for a couple years to record it. when the situation arose to collaborate with amagi, this was a good one to go with. but the goal ended up making it familiar but make it to or own style, and it gave me a chance to solo out for a while! thanks for stopping by the house! Nice, fresh take on this classic song, guys. I LOVE rock organ. Wish there would've been at least one organ solo in place of one of the guitar solos. Just personal preference. Production was great. Couldn't give high marks for originality. After all, this is a cover. But, that didn't detract me from giving high marks everywhere else. :) [ Reply to This ]
thanks plenty &mdash 11/20/06 - 09:19:27 PM
we did want to inject our own styles, doing a cover was a good way to get our feet wet for a collaboration. amagi's organ playing throughout was almost a solo in its own right. he played dynamics on what was going on with everything else throughout. it's been a while for me to just go for it on guitar so it was one big jam. a fun one at that. thanks for stopping by the house! THIS ROCKS! I've always loved this song, and this song corrects the few things that I didn't like about the Animals' version. I always thought the Animals drummer didn't play enough snare. You guys fix that problem (even though the drums are a bit shaky at times). Your vocals are awesome! Even better than the Animals. I especially love Amagi's vocal in the first verse - got a great deep baritone thing going on. Is one of the guitar solos played through GB's harmonizer? Today I was screwing around with that thing, and your tone sounds a lot l | |
