Description
I’ve heard several versions of this recently... it got me to wondering how I would approach the song so I would sit and play it when I could... I've been struggeling with a hand problem... anyway, after about a month I had the arrangment minus the vocals... I stayed home from work yesterday because i could only open one eye... poison ivy.... so the one eyed man went into the studio and layed down the trax... and arranged vocals into the night.. I’m kind of fried, and I’m not sure if I should post this until I hear it with fresh ears

Lyrics
I AM A POOR WAYFARING STRANGER TRAVELLING THROUGH THIS WORLD OF WOE
THERE'S NO SICKNESS, NO TOIL NOR DANGER IN THAT BRIGHT LAND TO WHICH I GO

I'M GOING HOME TO MEET MY MOTHER I'M GOING THERE NO MORE TO ROAM
I'M JUST GOING OVER THE RIVER JORDAN I'M GOING OVER NOW TO MY HOME

I KNOW DARK CLOUDS WILL GATHER ROUND ME I KNOW MY WAY IS ROUGH AND STEEP
BUT FIELDS OF GOLD LIE OUT BEFORE ME WHERE ALL THE SAINTS THEIR VIGILS KEEP

I'M GOING HOME TO MEET MY FATHER I'M GOING HOME NO MORE TO ROAM
I'M JUST GOING OVER THE RIVER JORDAN I'M GOING HOME

I'LL SOON BE FREE FROM EARTHLY TRIALS
THIS BODY RESTING COLD IN THE ORCHARD YARD
I'LL DROP THIS CROSS OF SELF-DENIAL AND GO SINGING HOME TO MY GOD

I'M GOING HOME TO MEET MY MOTHER I'M GOING THERE NO MORE TO ROAM
I'M GOING HOME TO MEET MY FATHER I'M GOING HOME NO MORE TO ROAM
I'M GOING HOME TO MEET MY SAVIOR I'M GOING HOME NO MORE TO ROAM

don't change a thing
You might "improve" things and take a way the magic!!!!

There may be technical things "wrong" here if you listened to individual parts but it works as an organic whole and that is the point.

I am interested in the
details... or "tech problems" because I do think I will have to remix this... I didn't carve out the back vocals and I think they are taking up too much space... I'm glad you got magic from this... it 's been posted serveal times now... and I was afraid people would turn it off before it got interesting

thanx

quick story
I mixed a piece for a woman years ago. A 25 minute "relaxation" tape. Music in the BG was recorded in a single take by a keyboard player and then the nest day the woman came to record the visualization story. I think it was called " a walk in the woods". She wanted the listener to "walk in the woods" as she described what you would see and how you would feel. In the 1st take she made several "mistakes" in her "script", but I, and the keyboard player, were hypnotized and even though I was paying attention to levels etc, the read worked. The music etc. worked as a whole. She listened to it that night and insisted that she come back in the next day to redo it. She tried 5 different "reads" which were technically much better. She decided to market the original however because it was the only one with the magic. Wisely I kept the first version.
If I sat and analyzed this song I might come up with some suggestions of changes you could make in the production, but the truth is that the magic is there. I was captivated by the song and spotted no "fatal flaws".

Scott, this is jaw-dropping....
Did this in a day, didja?

I'm just sitting here sucker-punched, really knocked out...

Read the absence of further commentary here as indicating that I can't find my way to even speak....

Good Lord, man...

You'll enjoy this... I was very influenced by Phyllis's "singers pray" in this post... I really payed attention to the vocal movement inside the chords... I thought she did such a beautiful job... so I kept that in the back of my head... I really started recording yesterday...but the real work was done hanging out on the guitar and finding my changes... that took awhile

humble thanx

My goodness....
...you have nailed it Scott. This is the best version posted to date! I doff my weather-beaten hat to you bro! I love your laid back "front porch at days end" approach. Somewhere between Phil Keaggy and Paul Simon. Your guitar playing is wonderful as per usual. But the most fantastic aspect of this is the beautiful vocal harmonies. Ha ha...I can't wait to read Curry's reaction...Thanks so much for the heads up.

Be blessed!

Hey Mike
thanx man... you were the one that got me thinking about this song... and it's shown up a few more times since then... Dadia(Jack) and hluper(Harold)... not to mention those who posted before... it's a long list... anyway, as I worked it kind of took on a life of it's own.. sometimes I feel like I'm just along for the ride... and thanx for the Paul Simon comparison... He seems so relaxed in his music... nothing feels forced

Fantastic vocals
And the lyrics are a bit different than those I know, and also beautiful. I love the bends you add to the melody line, and then when you bring in your vocal harmonies - wow! The melody line is at a really nice, reflective tempo, but the depth of the harmonies keep it from getting bogged down and repetitive. Faved and downloaded.

Hi Kristy
I kind of made it my own... there where things about the lyrcal meter that I wasn't comfortable with... and at such a slow tempo (I really take my time with this, as you pointed out) that meter problem was magnified... so I just sang it how I would of if I wrote it... I also wanted to emphasize "going Home"... that seems to me to be the heart of the song

thanx

Scott, I really like your version of this. It's unique and the harmonies are awesome. Your playing is excellent, in spite of your hand problem (I pray the Lord totally heals that) and the poison ivy was good to get you out of work and into the studio, so we could all hear this. Truly a beautiful rendition.

I appreciate that very much... The playing on this isn't really hampered by my hand... I can't play as often or as long... I can plan when to play by taking anti-inflamitories... whatever it is, by now seems chronic...but it comes and goes... on good days it hardly bothers me...but I don't play for fear of irritating it... that's really the hard part ... I used to play all the time

you can rest assure...
that you've mixed, produced and performed a totally perfect song. I just want you to know I love what you've done, and that I have to pick my jaws up from the floor after writing this.

The harmonies you do is so sweet and that guitar is brilliant. What a great sound you get! And I wonder what it would sound like if your hand was OK... Together with your lead vocal this makes a total package that is pure magic to listen to.

Thanks... I'm off for my Sunday walk, but will put this one on my iPod to go:)

You laid this down; Scott, this is beautifully rendered - can't say that I would expect any less from you. When you talked about this before I tried to imagine how the "Carmichaelized" version would be, but I grant you that you superseded my expectations.

Beautiful harmonies and guitar, but most striking to me is the wonderful rearrangement you made in the delivery of this message.

Thanks so much for following through with this and sharing it with us.

My work has gotten noticably better since arriving here at MJ... the comments and forums really fine tune the studio time... Super duper!
Reminds me a lot of Harry Manx. If there was something it needed, I think the guitars should be backed off a little under the singing. The guitars are gorgeous, of course, but I think the vocal performance is what is really compelling in this arrangement. There are some sort of quavering qualities to the voices, but that makes them all the more human. Very powerful, and whatever little nits I have aren't going to keep me from downloading this one.

Thank you Jim
The last thing I would expect at MJ is to be known as a singer... I learned to arrange vocals mostly to hide my vocal flaws, and also because I love vocal arrangments... When I go back to Indiana for high school reunions, everyone there still thinks I'm a drummer... they can't believe that I play guitar... the last thing that the musicians I came up with would ever guess is that I try to sing... they would have never let me near a mike... but when you write, it sometimes come down to you to get the song across... Much of this stuff I'm learning later iin life..

thanx again Jim

Just getting better and better
Starting out like a little hesitating it is just getting better and better as the song goes on. Towards the end I am completely catched in this heavenly environment and want to stay in the song forever.

I guess some musicians have the calling to bring some of heaven to earth. Also guess that is a very important task. So Scott: Keep on, your work is seen, your work is heard, your work is loved and your work works.

No wonder...
... you're one of the major MJ's artist in this genre. Nothing to add to what has been and so well told, except, as a kind of newbee here, I would like to know a bit more about this "wayfarer craze". Who wrote it ? How can I easily find all the version of it ? I love listening to the different covers of a great song.

I'm not sure of his name... but I heard it was written by a freed slave, who went on to become a pastor... I don't know his name, but the song & lyrics touch a nerve of longing that I think everyone can relate to... that's why it's has such wide appeal... and it gets deliverd through someone who lived it, so there is an authenticity about it... (Slavery is sad sad footnote in American history) it was an affront to God, we paid a heavy price for it, and rightfully so...

Insanly sweet, my friend. You seem to go about this the way I do - If folks knew how long I can sit in one spot putting together a piece of music, they'd sign me in...

Scott, this peice will never stop harmonizing w/ sweet spirits... I get so mezmorised when I listen to your works, and boy this one really put me in a trance-like state -- Man...

And now you should know that I'm really 'chumpn' at the bits' to get my hands on a little some'em some'em... I almost wanna tell ya to stay away from those silly ol drums...

Not bad for a guy with a deficit in the vision department :)
Lush guitars in the intro - beautifully recorded and played. Strong and rich vocal, thoughtful interpretation of a beautiful song. You didn't make a mistake in posting this version, that's for sure. Love the rich and very CSNY harmonies on this, and the emotive, tasteful guitar licks. Only (very minor) nit is some clipping (mainly vocal) here and there, but this only serves to show that this is not some professionally tweaked piece - I am in awe of your amazing voice/s and beautiful guitar work.
Thanks for posting,

I noticed you're here less frequent... anyway, I would gladly trade you my voice for your composition skill... you don't see how many takes I have to do? seriously.. I'm glad there was magic in there.. the language of the heart

you are making me jealous
I think I want a Drawmer. Great presence on the guitars and vocals. Nice work.

Like the subtle pseudo-solo guitar lines that you throw in. Especially like when the backing vocals come in.

no doubt
the drawmer has been a work horse for me.. you won't hear a vocal or acoustic guitar from me without it... and I'm learning all the time... when ever people ask me how to get started...it's always the same answer... good mikes... great preamps

thanx much Mason

Thank you
The first time I heard this, I was blown away by the musicianship and production values. Having listened again (and again) I heard the message. Thank you so much for putting me back in touch with a power greater than myself.

Peace Dave
and a humble "your welcome"... God doesn't get good press in these times... I'm afraid He is not always represented well by those who claim to speak for him... I have always felt that if people knew Him, they would not be able to resist Him, or want to... I will not take one step forward without Him... my life without Him was no life at all... and Life with Him has been an exrtaordinary journey... truely

again and again you say? thanx

Wow!
What a terrific peice work here, Scott.

Great arrangement, mix and performance on the voxes and guitars.

Your chord progression is more complex than a CSNY arrangement, I think.

Has an I.G.M. (Macjammer) feel to it.

Bravo!

Top marks, keeper and faved!

IGM is on my Fav list... and he has some wonderful music..."a lot to beleive" one of my fav's... I get compared to CSN&Y alot, I don't mind, but I never try to sound like them, it just ends up that way... So, it's kind of cool to be compared to a MJer...

thank you for the listen & comment

Hey Thomas, why not try a more KEYBOARD based version?
Scott Carmichael said 3952 days ago (November 25th, 2006)
Hey Thomas
I thank you sir... I was telling Texfeel (john) that any new MJer's are going to think that this song is mandatory... Mike thinks we can pull together an album of just versions of this song... even so I had to post it, after finding my voice in there somewhere...

thanx again... I'm coming to listen

another...
Scott,
this is the first of your numbers that I've listened to. I am really impressed especially with your lazy guitar pickin' and the easy bass you've laid down. The piece really gets strong about 1/2 way in. You seem to "find your chops" by then and it never lets up from there on out. Love the harmonies in the background....This is such a cool piece, Scott. I guess there are some little technical things here and there recording-wise, but as far as I'm concerned, you've nailed this number.

I have a few nits with this one too... if ever I put this on a CD I would have to fix a couple things... although, I did want this to start out faultering... I did several takes of the early exposed vocal, taking 1/2 breaths so that it wouldn't be strong... it's much easier to sing when you are pushing a bit harder... it felt like a continual compromise... I was afraid people would turn it off before it got interesting... thanx for the listen

Warmth of Crosby's best
A very cool David Crosby feel (may favorite of the CSNY crew). Excellent harmonies. Crystalline lead guitar and warm bass note ladened chords. The main critique is that your multi-layered inhales are a bit too loud in my ears, they rasp across the lushness and I worry for your health as I listen. But maybe that is becuz I just got back from visited my Dad in the hospital and emphysema is on my mind. Wonderful arrangement. The respect you bring to your craft, to your music, to your life, is inspiring.

Hey thanx Tobin
I'm completely unaware of the rasping until you point it out... funny, the things we don't hear,,, I still haven't learned to hear objectively... will keep "Tobins Father" in prayer... my father has been battleing a strange infection and has lost weight... this is the first holiday that they're not coming out east to visit... ouch... Lastly I would only hope to inspire someone such as yourself, but never presume to

humble thanx

Wicked discipline
on the BG vox. They are really tight and "true". While there might be- MIGHT be- some carving out to do, I agree with the "announcer": there is magic in this version. Beautiful.

If I was putting this on a CD I would still be compelled to tweek a bit after sitting with this for awhile ... I hear a little clipping (VOX)... carving a space out would prol fix that... I'll be by to take a listen as soon as things settle down

"magic" thanx again

Intoxicating
I hadn't read your description at first; just listening to your pickin' and thinking, " I wish I could get a sound like that". No idea you had a hand problem. Really beautiful guitar sound, the vocals spot-on; a pleasure to listen to audio-wise and a positive emotional response from somewhere deep inside. The harmony vocals come in at just the right time; a nice surprise that's done well.

My hand problem is starting to get somewhat better... less chronic... the sound really comes from the preamp/mikes... It's the one place where you can't skimp.... I went into the studio with the guitar changes that I was exited about... the whole vocal thing took shape as I went along... it was an unexpected suprise

thanx again

Wonderful
Saying more would just detract. So I voted.

As for your hand, the best sax solo I ever recorded was a night when I felt like absolute crap -- I think it slowed me down some, and certainly got my head in a different place.

I'd love to collab.
