Description:
A while back, Caroline sent Alfalpha a vocal track of the classic 1931 piece by Kahn, Schwandt & Andre...

Well, it's been a long time between drinks, as they say...and after quite a few drinks, we finally have managed to come up with this rendition...(Caroline has finally realised her fantasy of sounding like a gramophone recording...)

Oh, we must add that this is the first time a midi keyboard was used putting this together and I gotta say, it's a heck of a lot easier than pencilling!

Anyway, we hope you like it!

...apologies to all the banjo & accordion players in this community!

Lyrics:
Stars shining bright above you,
Night breezes seem to whisper 'I love you'
Birds singing in the sycamore tree,
'Dream a Little Dream of Me'

Say 'nightie-night' and kiss me,
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me

While I'm alone and blue as can be
'Dream A Little Dream' of me

Stars fading, but I linger on dear,
Still craving your kiss:

I'm longing to linger till dawn dear,
Just saying this:

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you,
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you,

But in your dreams what ever they be,
'Dream A Little Dream of Me'

where'd you get the old vacuum-tube version of Garageband? Other than the volume being turned down a little low on this 78 RPM recording, you guys did a splendid job making this sound like a live-recorded performance... great work on the instruments, and super singing, and great work also on EQing the high/low ends off to push this back 90 years. Very cute!
ttfn,
Drakonis

...thanks Drak, we managed to find a dust-covered copy of GB 0.0001 in the back of the wardrobe...(1931 version)
Anyway, this baby only offers 1 EQ setting, its called 'AU78'...;)

Cheers!

what a joy &mdash 11/20/06 - 03:44:31 PM
This is really great. Brilliant vintage production, and Caroline's performance is dead on. Of course I know this song from before, but listening to this version reminds me of the fact that this is just one hell of a great composition... 75 years could not destroy its quality. I enjoyed this so much.

Cheers Walter,
as I mentioned to Drakonis, we had to pull out an old dusty version of GB in order to realise this...!

We had fun!

old and new &mdash 11/21/06 - 02:43:12 PM
Very nice, imaginative arrangement of this tune, and excellent vocal performance by Caroline.

I liked the vintage gramophone effect on the vox, but somehow the modern-sounding accompaniment didn't quite fit it. Perhaps if it had been tweaked a little along the same lines as the vox, everything would sound more integrated.

Great pacing and tempo, and I particularly liked the quick piano riffs. Very inventive, and the flourishes fit the "vintage" mood of this song perfectly.

new and old... &mdash 11/21/06 - 04:34:31 PM
...cheers Cameron,

...the 1931 version of GB had a tough time collaborating with the modern instruments! LOL!

We appreciate your kind words,

Thanks for listening!

Keepin' it lazy &mdash 11/22/06 - 04:14:26 PM
Nice easy feeling to this and a great choice of instrumentation - a real tea dance band sound. Caroline does sound as if she's on a 78 rpm recording but the rest of the track doesn't - which is a curious effect... Perhaps the whole thing needs to be scratchier!

Good choice of song too - I had no idea it was so old.

Bliss &mdash 11/25/06 - 06:10:04 AM
This turned out beautifully. Caroline, nice jazzy performance. It's a little bolder than usual, as you are becoming willing to stray a bit from the melody to stamp it as your own. The musical bed is brilliant, filled with lovely flourishes. I really like what you did on this, both of you. It's a favorite song of mine, so what a treat to hear this lovely version.
