Description:
If you grew up during the 80s, then you know the significance of John Hughes. To me and so many of us who spent our formative years in that decade, John Hughes' movies spoke to our generation. They were funny, smart, well written and starred people who we felt like we went to high school with. Plus, they always had great soundtracks.

And of course, there's my obsession with Molly Ringwald. :)

This is more than just a tribute to the man who brought us these great movies, though. It's something I worte for a very special friend who shares my love for these movies and who has been there for me through all my hard times here recently (not Molly Ringwald this time.)

This is also a throwback to the 80s musically. All synth. Just a few monkied with percussion loops.

If you aren't familiar with John Hughes or his works and want to do some research before or after listening to this tune, here are some suggestions - "Sixteen Candles," The Breakfast Club," "Pretty In Pink" (best soundtrack EVER!), "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and "Some Kind of Wonderful." This should give you a good start.

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it. " - Ferris Bueller

John Hughes

Did I see you at the movies
in 1984?
Watching Sixteen Candles
you walked in through the door

I’d like to think that it was you
though I know it couldn’t be
I’d like to think when the movie ended
I saw you smile at me

Did I see you at the movies
in 1991?
Watching Home Alone again
You laughed and had such fun

Were those tears of laughter
I saw on your face
Did we walk out together
but in a different place

Watching John Hughes movies
Late into the night
I’ll put my arm around you
and make everything all right

If you need to feel that someone
is always on your side
Just watch those John Hughes movies
and it will be all right

You’ve reached out so far for me
and helped heal my pain
I’ll always reach out to you
when you need the same

It will be Some Kind of Wonderful
when we both smile again
Knowing through the dark sad times
We’ve both found a friend

Watching John Hughes movies
Late into the night
I’ll put my arm around you
and make everything all right

If you need to feel
that someone’s on your side
Just watch those John Hughes movies
and it will be all right
One day, we’ll go together
and visit Shermer High
We’ll see Claire and Bender and Farmer Ted
and, maybe Cameron Frye

We can walk the streets and see these faces
and feel like we’re with friends
and we'll know they make us smile
we’ll be happy in the end.

Watching John Hughes movies
Late into the night
I’ll put my arm around you
and make everything all right

If you need to feel
that someone’s on your side
Just watch those John Hughes movies
and it will be all right

Watching John Hughes movies
Late into the night
I’ll put my arm around you
and make everything all right

If you need to feel
that someone’s on your side
Just watch those John Hughes movies
and it will be all right

I'd tell you what I told Molly, but you'd bum. Cutie On Screen though, No?

Big Scape, here. You've sure added a dimension, Eh?

Very Best To You, Brother.

When I think of movies...... &mdash 11/19/06 - 10:34:22 PM
This is the only writer, director, producer, in my book!!! What a beautiful song.....in the same tradition as his movies! You have me singing! John Hughes has made me laugh so hard i cried so many times, and I love the heart he has. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles had me sold immediately, and the vacation movies...Christmas vacation, is a movie we watch at least once every year, never ever getting tired of them. Being from Chicago, myself, his movies endear me all the more. It's wonderful to hear this post, and to know the man and his movies, have not been in my own imagination!!!! :) The NightBird~

Guitar free zone! &mdash 11/20/06 - 12:56:05 AM
Feels good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes Joseph, doesn't it?! This reminds me of Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town", and any number of Beach Boys early tunes. I know nothing about the man - I'm one of those people who never remember directors, producers, actors (etc) names - I often forget the name of the movie! Will keep an eye open.
Voice is getting better and better Joseph.

I Remember JH from &mdash 11/20/06 - 08:04:04 AM
his National Lampoon magazine days. His film work is like Disney in comparison. For some reason, he never made a film from his story "My Vagina". But I digress ....
Is this a remake of a song you previously posted? It seems oddly familiar.
Very good emulation of the 80's sound. I feel a mullet growing.

I love the 80's &mdash 11/21/06 - 01:18:05 PM
therefore, I love your song. Really, those were the good old days, music was fresh and innovative, things were simpler...oh, I'm getting teary-eyed. Anyway, you've done a great job of accomplishing that nostalgic eighties sound.

I never had an obsession with Molly, thankfully so. This is however a very good celebration of the great 80's, something you've mastered many times before. There often a clean Ultravox kind of way you play your keyboards, which is of course the best of the best. Good melody and story telling through out. Good vocal harmonies towards the end. Thanks for yet another great contribution. /M
