Description:
The person for whom I wrote this song suggested that I create a piano version of it, just for fun. I am by no means a "real" piano player, but this is my take on what this song would be on the piano. It's pretty stripped back, with a touch of guitar, just to fill some space here and there.
Lyrics:
I know that you're lost, between love and hate run at any cost
You're heart's full of fear, you're inside yourself, you've got no more tears
Can I be so selfish, to want you for my own, for my own
Can you be so selfish to want me for your own, for your own
You're living your life, through uncertanties, but you've gotta fight
She's taken your soul, even who you are does she really know
Can I be so selfish to want you for my own, for my own
Can you be so selfish to want me for your own, for your own
So selfish
Remember this point in time, will be swept away by fifty more in line
Let your fate guide you through, yeah it's destiny between me and you
Can I be so selfish to want you for my own, for my own
Can you be so selfish to want me for your own, for your own
So selfish
So Selfish

I like the quality &mdash 11/22/06 - 10:53:36 PM
especially of the piano. There's an interesting "plucky" noise in it. You have a very nice voice that compliments the music very well. I haven't heard any other versions of this song, but I really like the sound and miniumal arrangement of this. [ Reply to This ]
sometimes less is more... &mdash 11/22/06 - 11:00:35 PM
Thanks for the comment ! I kept this pretty simple on purpose. The guitar version is a tab "happier" in some forms, and this version on the piano completely changes the song. And I'm fairly happy with how it turned out.

technical piano critique... &mdash 11/22/06 - 10:53:42 PM
You're trying to mic the piano... you did pretty well, all the notes are coming through pretty evenly. However, it sounds like you're missing some low end, and may be a little high end too, you may want to use the piano track's equalizer and drop the high-midrange a little, and slightly boost the bass and treble. The guitar sounded slightly out of tune to the piano, so that was distracting. You can also try doubling the piano track, and panning each one far left and far right, then it will be "in the middle" but not interfere with the singing. Also the piano accompaniment was nice, but almost too even, I wanted a chorus-type break in there to add interest. Those are my quick thoughts for now... hope that helps and gives some ideas! Good luck with this.. you want to post another one without guitar so I can hear the piano better, and I can try to catch it Friday morning maybe?

as always... &mdash 11/22/06 - 10:58:19 PM
Your comments give me so much to work on! I was really mucking around with the guitar just for some fun. I've actually have two separate piano tracks on there, I guess that I need to pan each a little more. I'll get a new copy for you by Friday morning ;)

I really like the detuned sound &mdash 11/22/06 - 10:56:43 PM
it adds atmosphere that works with the lyrical content. Sometimes simple pictures are the best. That's a kid's book that might as well be a bible to me. Beautiful work here. [ Reply to This ]
a little out of tune.. &mdash 11/22/06 - 11:02:35 PM
To get it perfect, I'd have to lower the guitar a bit, tune wise, but like you, I actually like the little bit that it's off. Thanks for the comment Bud !

Thanks Alex ! &mdash 11/23/06 - 09:10:00 AM
It fits the weather over here in Canada as well, so I suppose some things don't change!

I dig... &mdash 11/23/06 - 09:12:48 AM
...the toy feel of the piano and the out of tune-feel. (maybe a new plug-in idea, out-of-tune)
Your voice reminds me a bit of Kim Richey at times - her slower stuff.
Thanks for recording! :-)
Oh - I like the songwriting too. [ Reply to This ]
thanks slide ! &mdash 11/23/06 - 09:23:11 AM
Micing that piano with one mic is not an easy thing to do. On my christmas list is another mic for sure ! Thanks for the comment and listen!

First off, minigurl, &mdash 11/23/06 - 10:09:16 AM
You're a good songwriter, and that's most of the game in my book...
You could probably put this across on a ukulele, although I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't try...
I really was wondering if this was some sort of warped piano preset on a sampler or synth... And then I wondered if the detuned quality in the guitar in the left channel was helping things...
This has something of a Sarah McLachlan (sp?) feel in the delivery, as well as a better sung Nico feel as well... Maybe a bit of Cowboy Junkies in the ambience and vocal delivery as well...
I like the minimal arrangement. It does have a little bit of disconnect between what I'm hearing as a relatively dry vocal and a very reverberant piano/guitar sound... It reminds me, actually, of Neil Young's version of 'Soldier'...
I'd love, for comparison, to hear a just piano version, as drakonis suggests.
But, bringing it back home, you're one of the songwriters around here, and this is a good song...

Thanks Ed!!! &mdash 11/23/06 - 10:15:08 AM
I think that I've come to the conclusion myself that I will be taking out that guitar bit. What can I say it was late and I was a little mental. I will have re-post it tonight without the guitar bit just for fun. Thanks so much, and have a wonderful turkey day !

Good song... &mdash 11/23/06 - 09:00:07 PM
...Lyrically. Your vocal is recorded well and this is a fine song. However, The out of tune guitar is a distraction. And, as others have stated, the piano could use some eq-ing
Hey, everybody has to begin this learning process sometime. It doesn't just happen over night. Thank you for having the courage to put you faith in complete strangers for their opinions. [ Reply to This ]

GONE! I took it out last night, and played around with the EQ and panning like Drakonis suggested. It does indeed sound much better. Thanks so much for the comment !

i to find your &mdash 11/23/06 - 11:27:17 PM
songwriting and vocal to be very good. probably did say that before. i guess by now you've heard about the piano and guitar. i won't go there. one fun thing to experiment with guitars, as in this case, is to duplicate the track and do a minimal pitch shift by a few cents, with luck it will come close to a twelve string or mandolin. it's fun, it's harmless and it's cheap. neat guitar tip!! &mdash 11/24/06 - 10:10:24 AM
Thanks for the tip re: two tracks slightly different. There's actually 2 piano tracks, and one is a fraction later than the other, I thought it gave it a nice full sound without being "out of synch" with the other.

Love your voice &mdash 11/24/06 - 11:12:30 AM
Nice solid song... Maybe some mixing issues, bring the instruments down a bit to keep your vocals up front more. Maybe tweak everything to sound like its more in a room and spread it out a bit. Play with the EQ's and add a little warmth. But what do I know. Thanks for sharing.

Nice version of this good song with always your nice voice.
If I have a little pref for the first guitar version, the result is quite as much good and very pleasant to listen to...
Good work... Thanks to share, and I wish you the new mic that you put on your Christmas list !
