Fan List
Description:
I grew up in Nashville but never cared for most country music. Bluegrass, however, is another matter. To me, they're not the same kind of music at all. I'm also a big fan of the mandolin but can't play it myself.

This song is one of those songs that came all at once, which almost never happens to me. Purists, be warned, it contains the dreaded "L" word. No, not "liberal;" I'm talking "loops" here. I found a couple of short, but wonderful mandolin loops and couldn't resist transposing them, twisting them, and generally sculpting them to fit my needs. The lead sounds like a mandolin but is actually me on guitar, after filtering the hell out of it to get the right sound.

This is just for fun; a song to bring you a smile and tap your toe to. Hope you like it.

Lyrics:
Oh yeah, I'm going down.
Well, I packed my bags and I gassed up my car.
I've drawn on the map 'cause I going pretty far.
I'm going down to Memphis, gonna see my girl.
I'm going down to her house and give her a whirl.
I'm going down to Memphis cause she called me on the phone,
said she needed me bad, she was feeling so alone.
So I'm going down to Memphis. I'm going down to see that girl.

Well I drove all night and I drove all day.
Stopped for gas and coffee and then I was on my way.
Yeah, I watching out for speed traps and cops with radar.
Yeah, I'm going pretty fast, 'cause I'm going pretty far.
I'm going down to Memphis to be with my girl;
I'm going down to Memphis, gonna shake up her world.
So I'm going down to Memphis. Going down to see that girl.

Well, there she stands in a brand new dress.
Whatever worries I had, well, they're gone I guess.
'Cause I came down to Memphis to be with my girl.
Yeah, I came down to her house; it's a brand new world.
I came down to Memphis, took her out to dance.
I'm taking a chance on a new romance.
Yeah, I'm going down to Memphis. I'm going down to see my girl.

I came down to Memphis to see that girl
I came down to her house to rock her world.
I came down to Memphis, 'cause she called me on the phone,
said she needed me bad, she was feeling so alone.
So I'm going down to Memphis. I'm going down to see that girl.

Hey J...I'm not much of a country fan either, although I like harder-edged alt. country like Steve Earle, Blue Mountain, Bottle Rockets, Charlie Daniels Band; etc.

I like Bluegrass much better. I love celtic music and Bluegrass is directly decended from it. Ever hear the short-lived Beacon Hillbillies?

Also I like Alt. Bluegrass. Ever hear the Blood Oranges or BO/front man/mandolinist Jimmy Ryan's solo efforts? GREAT STUFF! Check Amazon.com for his stuff.

RE this tune: I like it. Nice energy. Good vox. Cool trad lyrics. Reminds me a bit of John Hiatt's LINCOLN TOWN.

I don't understand why it's had so few hits. Maybe the genre frightened folks off? But that seems rather dumb to me!

Hang in there man!

Me, I'm a Lyle Lovett fan, and Hank Williams, of course, some of Willie Nelson's stuff but not a whole lot more. Anyway, thanks for listening and for commenting. Always good to hear from you.

...back in the 80's I read almost every one of Erich Fromm's books. My faves were/are: ESCAPE FROM FREEDOM, THE HEART OF MAN and TO HAVE OR TO BE?

Really glad you enjoyed this. Yeah, I know what you mean--I don't listen to a lot of Bluegrass either, but it is a facinating sound. Almost always upbeat and toe-tapping, even when the lyrics are about the sad aspects of life.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated.

Really like &mdash 02/07/07 - 10:30:38 PM
the way the subtle background vocals broaden the tune.

This could easily be on a soundtrack of some movie. Car going down the highway...early early morning...city in the distance.

Cool instrumentation. Really enjoyed this.

I enjoy the percussion &mdash 02/19/07 - 11:11:15 PM
and the way you put it together; nice way to mirror the hooks in the music with lyrical rhythm hooks; I appreciate that kind of writing. Toe definitely taps.
