Description:
The synthesizer bass riff and the wind were created in MelodyAssistant, exported as .AIFF files. Effects applied in GarageBand.
There is no loops, all the drum patterns were constructed manually in GarageBand, using Techno Drum Kit Software Instrument.
The bells are recorded, so are the sax "flaps" (to reinforce conga sound when the riff builds up) and a pseudo-guitar lick at the end (sax with Amp Simulation effect).
For the artwork I used a fragment of an original photo by J. F. Maion.
Hardware:
Yamaha "CustomZ" tenor saxophone YTSZ82, RadioShack 33-3004 dynamic microphone with XLR-1/4" converter, iMic USB interface, iMac G4 800Mhz (1GB RAM).
Software:
MelodyAssistant 7.0.1
GarageBand 1.1

Arabic wild winds &mdash 07/25/04 - 10:47:38 PM
Very sweet sax duet and desert concept. There is still a
touch of distortion occasionally in the right side sax. Your
breath, all the production work, are really cool. Although
this is really a tone poem sort of concept song without a
melody, except the arabic tonal scale, it is a very cool
track that left me moved and transported. Effective and
wonderful. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you, Tobin. This scale had been haunting me for years, I just had to let it out. I am not sure about the distortion, though ( I thought I managed to keep it under control this time, could it be just the reverberation overtones conflicting with each other and the phaser?) [ Reply to This ]

I really enjoyed listening to this especially because you are not doing the same darn thing as everyone else. I liked the different scale, the mix was solid. I'd have done a bit more with the drums, but they worked as is, maybe a fade out ending. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you. I try :).
As for the drums, yes - the tune is begging for a long and juicy percussion solo, but I dread the very idea of manually putting that in, besides, it might end up sounding very artificial, and I have nobody to play them for me so far... may be later. [ Reply to This ]

I really like what you've done in this tune, very creative,
interesting sounds produced and performed well.
The way you've traded sax tracks back and forth works
excellently. I also like the rising high synth sounds and
the little modal middle-eastern flourishes which add an
exotic spice to the track.

Thank you. I've been sitting on this for a while, and then working on it for a
while as well.
Glad you liked it :) [ Reply to This ]
Very imaginative &mdash 07/27/04 - 11:05:32 PM
and interesting! I think the wind could be toned down
with some more (what? reverb? I dunno what.) to make it
more atmospheric and less up front. It sounds a little too
artificial right now which makes it sound slightly corny.
That is just a minor quibble, and I like the idea of the wind
though -- the rest of the creativity of the song more than
makes up for it. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you. I might indeed consider rebalancing the wind a bit, right now I am
so tired of this piece, I can't think straight; it needs to settle a little... [ Reply to This ]

I liked this very much. Ambient arabic jazz sounds. I really
enjoyed the pitch slides on the strings. Surprised me when
they came in. [ Reply to This ]

I like the mystery. It reminds me of something from Blade
Runner. Great evocative musical melodies.

Brief Description: This piece you heard or about to hear will actually put you on a camel back crossing the desert sands leaving a thirst of dramatic art at its best!
Pros: Very creative and just right (as in changes and play length)! Great Intro (wind/percussion transitioning) with the wind fading- in and ending with the wind fading out! Percussion is fit (amount uses, beats accented, clarity in the mix). The Bass sythn works well holding the rhythm tight and awesome Sax work (that%u2019s has a melodic feeling/performance and accentuations, in my opinion), I really enjoy the tone elements (breaths dynamics on the reed, kind of portraying the wind, if you will.) I like how you get that Egyptian sense as the core melody throughout the piece. The SFX (Wind) on the synth is creative; Great Production work to boot! Overall, this piece is clean in all aspects (IMO), like the camel your rode on, left no tracks behind...
Cons: None!
Suggestion: none
