Description:
nyone know how to play drums?

I find a hard time letting go of the warts. All my posted songs have them thus far.

That's the legacy of an improvising artist who doesn't have the virtuso's touch.

Doesn't stop one from trying for a wart-free performance. This one seems to be getting me closer to that goal.

Have some patience on this one, At about 2:15 it starts cooking!

Nice Guitar Harmony &mdash 11/28/06 - 05:39:33 AM
Hey Pete...

1st off, thanks for commenting on my song, Never Wanna Cry. I like this piece. the beginning is a bit like you are finding your way and then about 2/3 in, you break out the guitar harmonies and it is sweet...

You may want to leave it as an instrumental, but I think you could take the best parts of it and use for a great vocal rock song, or in a collab with someone.

Just my thoughts :)

Aaron David

PS... where in New Brunswick are you? I was born and raised near St George, 40 mins below St John....

The biggest lobster... &mdash 11/28/06 - 09:03:40 AM
...I ate in my life came from St. George's. Big 4 pound brusier that i could barely get in the pot. Yum!

I have been living in the Florenceville area of New Brunswick for almost 10 years now, after moving from Newfoundland.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the second part of the song is the better portion of this particular dish. And I do have visions of one day incorporating it into a vocalized rocker.

The harmonized lead section... &mdash 11/29/06 - 07:05:17 AM
...is worth waiting for...

Brian May would've started a song with that bit.

Your main riff keeps reminding me of the Van Halen take on 'Pretty Woman'...

Seems like you've got something of a gift for harmonizing and for multitracking guitars...

Waiting &mdash 11/29/06 - 08:33:59 AM
Thanks for the comments Ed. I was wondering if I had that harmonized portion too far back in the song.

It's my favourite part of the song and I'd hate to think someone missed it because they couldn't suffer through the beginning.

Mr. NB, warts are what . . . &mdash 11/29/06 - 09:50:10 AM
let us know that you aren't a brain in a vat plugged directly into a midi controller. Besides, it makes the music sound "liver", and I dig that.

The composition in this piece is pretty slick. I like your attention to rhythm modulations. So many rock instrumentals suffer from the same straight-ahead drum beat, and this piece has an interesting break-beat thing going on. It still sounds looped, but it's a cool loop nonetheless. The guitars are interesting too. I like how you've broken the chords up across at least three tracks (I think?). It reminds me of Baroque chamber music in a Joe Satriani sort of way : )

Sweet.

Where can I get... &mdash 11/29/06 - 11:43:58 AM
...one of those cool brain in a vat midi controllers? If we can get one of those out on the market place we'll be rich!

Thanks for the comments. Baroque in a Satriani way?! I better not dwell on that or my head might get too big to fit back in the vat!

I don't know who markets these . . . &mdash 11/29/06 - 07:23:26 PM
direct brain-midi controller links, but I think you could make one with two pieces of copper wire, a lemon, a midi cable, and a tub of vasolene. I saw the schematic on some anarchist's website.

Happy vatting!

If you find yourself lacking finesse, a big rock will usually make a sufficient substitute.

Yeah! &mdash 11/30/06 - 08:59:15 AM
I'm always a bit nervous about guitar rock instrumentals. But this one did it for me. Don't sell yourself short: I really dig the first half. Simple melody, repeated just enough to become familiar.

The drums, yeah, loopy. I've found quite a few decent drum loops that are free. With all those sample packs, y'know? I have a couple dozen Drums on Demand loops that sound great and I use alot. I really should just buy a set.

Anyways, great job. Excellent guitar tone. Sometimes it sounds like the overall mix level hits the red and distorts. Very minor detail. Great track!

Glad this one passed the instrumental muster! &mdash 11/30/06 - 02:24:54 PM
Thanks for the kind words Pooey. I do like the beginning, it is one of my finer improvised efforts I've captured on "tape".

General consensus amongst my friends who've heard seems to indicate the second part is what they really like. Can't complain I guess, at least they like something!

Thanks &mdash 11/30/06 - 03:10:09 PM
I was improvising for the first 2 minutes or so then for the main melody over the second part. I spent a little time finding some suitable harmony notes to start off the second part then winged it again.

The additional track that joins the two parts together was constructed.

Cool! &mdash 12/01/06 - 05:11:47 PM
I guess everyone is their own worst critic. I hear a few missed notes and unintended melodic directions. But that is the charm of improvised playing, mistakes take you down different roads.

Glad you liked it.

Great Guitar Sounds &mdash 12/02/06 - 02:21:37 PM
I really like the quality of your guitar tones. Very good. I agree with the Van Halen reference. The harmonized guitars are done very well. I would suggest a rhythm guitar of some kind during that section. The rhythm is very strong in the opening part and a strong rhythm in the second section would enhance the leads, imho.

Rhythm Guitar &mdash 12/02/06 - 03:20:30 PM
There actually is a rhythm track but I guess it is a little too subtle to stand out. For sure it doesn't have the presence of the first section's rhythm.

The Van Halen reference didn't stand out to me until I went and listened to Pretty Women like Ed had pointed out. It does have a strong similarity there, but purely unintended (or subcincious).

Thanks for the good words!

Hi again. Like this - you've definitely improved loads since your first attempts. The solo really takes off about 3/4 the way in.

Very cool rocking tune &mdash 02/20/08 - 09:47:07 PM
I love your playing, and that's a great guitar sound you have going there. The beat is good - I agree with the commenter who said it's more interesting than the typical beat you find in rock tracks. Perhaps a few fills would add to the dynamics? But this is a quibble. Great track - you have a great style. Nice one. Peace.

I dug the first part. If you're going to inadvertantly sound like someone, EVH isn't a bad option :). However, I was digging the second part more. I'm a sucker for harmonized guitar.

nice harmonising &mdash 02/25/08 - 09:33:38 AM
Nice twin guitar sound - reminded me of Blue Oyster Cult. Have you tried laying some drum loops behind these to give them some drive?
