Description:
My 1st song ever posted to MJ. I incorporated some changes based on some good feedback from Patrick (Futzpucker). I added real drums. Well MIDI drums. Limited additions via a Roland TD7 kit (layered over original loops). I did manage to add a cowbell :-) The whole song was sort of a jam that just evolved out of the strangled duck loop that only appears in the first two measures. Candles suggested. Cave optional.
Explicit reverb

Cool jam, definitely of the melting candles variety. Some of those notes have demented colors, which is great. That looks like an awesome cave, it makes me want to go there and get a closer look. [ Reply to This ]

PV, thx for checkin it out. After it was all said and done it felt like the mix was funnelled thru a reverb orgazmontron 2000 or...a cave. Since I like nature I opted for the latter [ Reply to This ]
Flawless &mdash 11/30/06 - 08:23:34 AM
This is truly excellent. Great job with the drums, so tight and tasty. The bass drives the tune and sounds perfect. Love all the different textures that you used on the riffing lead intruments, and the melodies played on them. My only suggestion is that you continue to share your talent and creativity with us mere mortals. [ Reply to This ]

in your praise AquilA! I read a post recently here on MJ where a member described a theoretical "human brain suspended in vaseline hooked to MIDI cables", thats about where I am :-) [ Reply to This ]
exellent &mdash 11/30/06 - 09:09:43 AM
production...and mix... I really love where the drums sit... the keyboard sounds rich and warm... deep and wide... really great playing and feel... john this sosunds radio ready... and as good as anything you'll hear on the smooth jaz station [ Reply to This ]

Scott, I certainly appreciate the comments. The original post was definitely lacking in the percussive area, so I take great pleasure hearing your take on this. There's no doubt in my mnd that this site has improved my skills through feedback, critique and support like no where else. [ Reply to This ]

Jazz fusion (or rock) isn't a thing I much listen to. I did, when rock was getting boring, just before the Punk Storm. A genre only for good musicians and performers, and, obviously, your are. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to overtake my biases. [ Reply to This ]
bias &mdash 11/30/06 - 01:40:58 PM
Youra, you articulate something I was trying to explain in chat the other day. That Mj (for me) motivates me to listen to all musical threads without my usual bias. Thank you for that thought so aptly expressed. [ Reply to This ]
It definitely is a jam session... &mdash 11/30/06 - 02:15:50 PM
And you could hear it's evolution into where we were going - Again, a very nice ride, sir - Nice drum work, to! - Funke' funke' funke' w/ a major whiff of sweetness - Always, ALWAYS a pleasure! Thank you sir! D [ Reply to This ]

Dion, glad to have you on the ride. I'm happy you picked up on that jam session feel. Thats exactly how it developed. I had a two bar loop, added drums one day and then jammed along with the bass a week or so later and then added from there. [ Reply to This ]

You got me hooked back on all these great fusion vibes. It may have a jam feel but this is one tight jam. [ Reply to This ]
jams &mdash 12/01/06 - 09:30:10 AM
Z, when i first threw this up as a post it was saddled with a lot of loops (stock ones) that were completely static from beginning to end. Thanks for the tight jam comment, i was hoping that this version would come across as more dynamic or fluid maybe. [ Reply to This ]

Ryan, keep up the live jam sessions in the basement. They're refreshing to me, after too much studio stuff :-) [ Reply to This ]
The only thing &mdash 11/30/06 - 10:53:08 PM
that could make this tune any better would be a real electric bass guitar. Very well constructied piece, every element is great in terms of production and performance. Better than most of the crap they play on smooth jazz stations these days. Top notch! [ Reply to This ]
real bass &mdash 12/01/06 - 02:11:03 PM
Ray, I'm in total agreement there. I'd add that a real drummer could proably add to the flavor as well. I am a fan of your music so I especially appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. [ Reply to This ]

Cool sound. Great playing. Nice tidy mix. Where'd the drum sounds come from? They sound great - well arranged.
I like it. [ Reply to This ]
gracias &mdash 12/01/06 - 03:15:53 PM
Nolan, the drums were inputed thru a TD-7 electronic drum kit. The synth module that acts as the brain has about 32 preset "kits" to choose from. This was #15 (Stage Kit). Of course my playing is heavily edited for clams. Also took advantage of subtle quatitize features of Pro Tools to tighten things up.

I love this piece. The true fusion atmosphere and sound is all there.

Bob, always appreciate a listen to older posts. The tune does have a "grey skies" vibe. When friends come over we use the progression to jam over and the jams usually last a looong time :-) [ Reply to This ]
