Description:
Edit: I'm changing this to "Open Collaborations". I'm open to suggestions and interpretations.

Another experiment in my quest to merge classical with modern electronica. Why am I so fascinated with it? Who knows, but it makes it very difficult to attach a genre to this on MacJams.

I've been experimenting with the audio abilities of my synthesizer, too. So this song is half software instruments and half Korg sounds; all played by me. No loops, 'cept for some chopped up percussion.

Anyone want to mess with this? Let me know! I reached a point with it that I don't want to add to it anymore, but I'd love to hear some vocals. Thanks for listening.

Hardware:
Powerbook G4, Korg Karma, the almighty Mighty Mouse, M-Audio Audiophile, KRK V4 monitors, crappy USB microphone.

Software:
Garageband, Karma built-in sequencers, iTunes LAME.

Transcends the genres &mdash 12/01/06 - 03:27:48 PM
Mmm, maybe the reason you keep wanting to merge the classical and electronica genres is because you're so darn good at it.

Your special gift is for injecting a deep pathos into synth-made music so it really touches the listener on a deep level while soaring through an amazing range of tones and textures.

Superb.

What a compliment. If I've made a slight emotional impact, I feel I've accomplished something.

the joke about me hating it is that she threw out MY 4 TRACKS!! heheh
she asked me to work on this one, but as usual, time got the best of me & she doesn't wait around once she gets going! she's really dying for someone to mess with this one to see where it goes. yes, i like it. ;)

Tasty Textures &mdash 12/01/06 - 04:38:09 PM
As always, your pacing and choice of textures is really beautiful. I too am after that illusive balance of classical and electronic (my latest shot is Emergent: http://www.macjams.com/song/26393). I like the little glitchy percussion parts and the blending of sounds you've got going on. Once again a Miss Chaos fav!

Brings everything together &mdash 12/01/06 - 05:23:51 PM
Very Well done. Love the major / minor transitions you often do.

Mixing electronica and classical fascinates me incredibly. You amaze me with it. You probably see me switch back and forth between the genre's, but I can never seem to put them together just right. You do it perfectly though.

I used to use many samples from my korg, but don't any more. Thanks for the reminder - I might give it a try again soon. :)

Glad to hear some more from you.

~ Ben

Hey Ben! &mdash 12/02/06 - 10:48:33 AM
Thanks for listening! I often hear your music (in my iTunes playlist, of course) and feel like I'm completely tuned in to your artistic mind. I've liked your stuff for a long time, and you certainly achieve that blending of styles as well. Once enough people catch wind of it, you're going to blow them all away. Hey, this one's open for collabs if you feel like adding or remixing it!

I find myself in this same sort of vibe...

This is a very spacious mix, and a great listen. Managing that thing I admire in other people's recordings, of being full without being busy... full, simple, enough, a nice spread of tones and timbres and textures...

Always thought that classical music was meant to merge with electronica. This song is a good example of why it works. You're really good. Too good... you're definitely a professional. Nice of you to come hang out with us tyros :) I was reminded of "Industrial Monk", which I bet you'd like if you haven't heard it.

Oh stop. professional amateur perhaps. You should see me fumble around the keys until I hear what I like. :-) Hey, I just listened to the Industrial Monk samples on iTunes. I think you're right. I'm going to have to check _nder's iTunes library. I bet he has the entire library of their music. It's right up his alley, too. Thanks for the big smiles and nice words, David.

I love that you meld different genres into your own. Boxes are meant for confinement and true creativity blows the lid off that idea and melts the walls to make a new world for personal expression. I love your work and this is no exception. If cold sleepless sounds like this then I welcome it. Bravo! :)

Quite a few people have commented on your composing skills on this song but I agree with moorlandt that you have created a lot of "air" in this piece. I like the way your have exploited the depth of the stereo sound field as well as the width. Beautiful posting.

Thanks, announcer &mdash 12/03/06 - 01:16:04 PM
I struggle a bit with the production end of things, so your comment was really reassuring. I still have these annoying little clicks on the audio clips that I record directly from my synthesizer. I'm trying to figure out how to remedy that. But on this tune, I was indeed aware of how I wanted the sounds to appear on the depth of field. Thanks very much for thoughtful review!

Outside of a box &mdash 12/03/06 - 11:25:05 PM
but it's a good place to be. I have to agree about the 'space' thing that's been mentioned. It's one of those things that I hear, but can't articulate, so I'm glad when someone else does. This is a really nice combination of voicings. Given your choices of genres, I think you chose well! It sounds like you were fortunate enough to have a Northern Lights show while you were unable to get to sleep. That happens sometimes.

MissC &mdash 12/04/06 - 08:48:50 PM
Finally made to the party, not too late, I hope - This is a beautiful piece of music, Stacy. - I'm amazed at the depth and richness of each individual tone that you've created in this almost classic bed of sounds. Each sound has a unique demeanor and sense of character which creates a depth in personality that only a well traveled soul might reveal...

Chilling... -- To say the least.

I like the poly-rhythmic elements in this, and how they play against the melodic phrases, crashing together to create these delightful little aural events.

Cinematic...

Someone should be paying you to do film-scores -

SERIOUSLY!!!

Thanks for yet another facinating and quite intriguing journey into your very imaginative, sonic world.

D

umm &mdash 12/04/06 - 10:57:44 PM
what does poly-rhythmic mean? LOL! I'm such a dunce when it comes to music terminology, I had to go look that up! This song was merely an experiment when I started it ; and I was hoping someone would say "gosh, this is pretty half-assed, so I'll relieve her and mix it up a bit". But I ended up spending a lot more time on it than I originally anticipated because, as you said, I started seeing the movie behind the music. I think you heard and saw it too. I'm glad I'm not the only sonic weirdo around. Long live MacJams! xxxooo!

I consider this a beautiful, polished, complete piece of music just as it is. I love your compositional decisions on this song, which is masterfully arranged. Your artistic side continues to grow.

You write lovely, evocative, living, breathing music that gently calls the listener's attention throughout. I'd call that a gift.

It's very reassuring that you and others can appreciate some of my experimentation like this. I find I've been lacking inspriation and direction, so being able to tap my MacJams resources is like a small slice of heaven. Thank you for continuing to encourage me.

I'm enjoying this piece a lot! I've been a fan for ... gosh coming up on years now, ( I love MacJams). Sorry this is my first comment. This song is a different direction in some ways than your earlier arrangements, yet I can still hear MissChaos through out. By the way is that your voice back there? I love the gracefulness of the piano "moments" and the return to electronica. You've always done a great job of making use of space and do it again here. This morning driving in to work listening to it, as I have for the past few days, I image a story with a theme of overall danger tied with the beauty of tragedy. Mixing the classical elements with electronic, sounds difficult to me but you've done a good job with it.

I'm glad you're here

I'd be thrilled to hear what you can do with it; mix it up, toss out the fluffy parts, add a human beat box -- whatever you do, don't make it country. ha! Send me a note and I'll get a GB file to ya if you're up for it. thanks!

the flow is organic and fits the instrumentation.

I think you could do more with the ending though.

Given my weak propensity for vocals, I can't help you there.

All of your latest music sounds like it's recorded in a HUGE soundstage. Is the Chaos/_nderscore residence a castle, or what?

I hope you don't mind. Some words I began to sing, after the piano.
Wonder, Wonder, Wonder!
Oh, when she comes,
You hear her in a thousand cries.
Here, heaven and beauty and danger lies.
Within her soul,
She holds the full, great breath of life.
The power and the wonder beyond all strife.
Wonder, Wonder, Wonder!
Oh, when she comes.
Oh, when she comes.
