5 minute challenge (5)
Description:
I am taking the 5 minute experiment to another level. Not only did I lay down the loops without listening to them, but then I did the mixdown to iTunes, convert to mp3, and submit to MacJams without listening. I have also made a personal pledge to not listen to it until I have received votes and comments from 3 MacJammers. I think it will be interesting to see comments, then hear what the person is talking about.

Please vote honestly. If it deserves a 2 give it a 2, but please vote and leave a comment. Let me know if I took the 12 step off an 11 step pier.

That was pretty bizarre &mdash 12/01/06 - 03:39:58 PM
Is this how a deaf Beethoven did it?

It was actually quite cohesive.

Actually, &mdash 12/02/06 - 03:42:05 PM
I think Beethoven cut the legs of the piano and "listened" the the vibrations on the floor.

I finally got comments from 3 people, (I couldn't wait for the other 2 votes).

I am quite surprised. It is rather cohesive. I think that speaks volumes for Garageband, that it can make things fit so well.

I put a series od deep electric piano loops in, that I didn't hear well, so I guess I didn't adjust levels as well as I could have. Anyay, I guess it was an interesting experiment.

Thanks for listening and commenting.

By the Title I thought &mdash 12/01/06 - 04:08:18 PM
you were covering John Cage's 4:33.
I like this experiment, especially the tempo and repetition ... like a record skipping in the same place. I can hear in my mind John McLaughlin soloing over this.

I would d/l this now &mdash 12/01/06 - 04:10:11 PM
but I am at work.

I like it fast and noisy.

Bizay! &mdash 12/02/06 - 12:26:40 AM
You've chosen some very contrasting sounds and the mixture is definitely unique. No one in their right mind would choose them. And maybe that's the beauty of this particular challenge--paradigms can't get in the way.

Having said that, I just made some wonderfully constructive comments (humble, eh?) on your last song "where's the speakers?" and I think your next creation will benefit greatly from it.

This piece, once it gets going, just repeats with very little contrast. Which is too bad. i'd love to hear the "response" to this "call." Is it possible to now listen to what you have and audition tracks to create a new, contrasting section? That could be very tough. Think about it though.

Keep up your little musical experiments. You're starting to get a little 20th-century on us, Stooey!

Didn't seem strange to me &mdash 12/03/06 - 03:51:19 PM
Interesting and inspiringI I read the comments first, then heard the piece and it wasn't anything like what I was expecting. I liked it, and I was curious about the process, so only then did I read the description and found out it was a 5-minute experiment that you never even listened to. 'Inspiring' may seem a strange word to use, but I think this is good and has enough potential to grow into something bigger, if you wanted to take it there.

It didn't seem particularly strange to me -- if anything, it's pretty mainstream within the context of 20th-century music -- but if it were to become progressively stranger and more 'out there,' well, then I think that would be pretty cool.

Thanks &mdash 12/07/06 - 01:41:29 PM
for the comment. I find it interesting you think this could lead to something else. I will give some listens and see if I can't take it somewhere else.

Interesting. &mdash 12/04/06 - 06:14:45 PM
So, have you listened to it yet? It kinda works. An oud as solo instrument with a big band behind it. Of course after aabout a minute I start to wonder what will happen next, and that's when the track ends.

I have listened to it &mdash 12/05/06 - 12:25:09 AM
I waited for three comments, but not three votes.

It's not like anything I have ever heard before. It need something, but I don't know what yet. Perhaps some vovals, maybe a bridge and bring back to these loops again.

We'll see. Thanks for commenting.

the ecosphere of a high arch bridge &mdash 03/22/07 - 08:59:03 AM
I'll be happy to send you the sounds I recorded on The High Bridge in St. Paul, Minnesota. Traffic, shuffling feet, prayers, wet splashes, tug boat horns, speed boats, locomotive engines, steam being released from coal-burning power plant, squawking crows, spiders weaving webs, etc. Well, you actually can't hear the spiders but they are there, doing their thang in the ecosphere of a lofty arch bridge.

you should finish this song! &mdash 03/22/07 - 12:42:08 AM
i actually really liked this. I voted as if I didn't know that it was created with all loops and without listening to it. the main thing that prevented me from giving it higher ratings was that it was basically the same thing over and over. But as an experimental idea i found it to be quite interesting. here are my scores:

song writing/content: 4 - only cuz it didn't seem complete

production/performance: 5

originality/creativity: 9 - cuz it did take my breathe away

overall in genre: 6 - cuz it is better than lots of 'experimental' stuff i've heard

Thanks for the kind words &mdash 03/22/07 - 11:21:55 PM
After reading your comments, I plan to return and see what I can do with it.

One idea I already have is to invent a more creative title.

Thanks again.

Hmm &mdash 03/22/07 - 04:52:28 AM
An interesting passage, but too repetitive. Would be nice if something more happened, if you could sort of build the theme further. Otherwise I feel this string instrument, and what it does, is very nice.

Thanks &mdash 03/22/07 - 11:18:32 PM
I felt it was repetative too. However, when I made it, based on the process, I thought that may happen.

The problem for the moment, is I don't know what to add to break it up.

Thanks again.

ENERGY TO GO &mdash 03/22/07 - 05:51:39 AM
There's an idea here.

Production is very Tight to Center and Emphatic, maybe too much.
Seems to want more Space in the Sound Scape.

I like the idea, though.

Thanks for the suggestions &mdash 03/22/07 - 11:24:39 PM
I can hear what you mean. All the sound is in both speakers all the time. Probably even playing with the pan left & right will help out.

Thanks again.

Interesting &mdash 03/22/07 - 10:06:38 AM
Cool idea, but it was kind of repetitive. It's catchy though, and it sounds cool for what it is.

Thanks &mdash 03/22/07 - 11:26:50 PM
I agree about the repetition.

Perhaps it should be the opening to a longer song, (this part would need to be shorter in that case.

great funkiness &mdash 03/22/07 - 05:23:51 PM
This sounds like it could have even the old school (Django Reinhart) playing some cool leads to it. I love the feel. It turned out exceptionally well.

I thought I was pretty up on music acts, but I don't recognize Django Reinhart. Who was he?

I will thank you for the complement, and promptly head to the iTunes store to hear what he sounds like.
