Keywords:
Celtic (77)Christmas (153)Advent (3)vocal (150)folk (369)guitar (906)flute (102)happy (104)
Description:
This is a song I originally wrote for a church group to perform at Advent. I recorded all of the parts - Flute & String bass on MIDI, voices and guitars as individual audio files. I did the recording last year, but did this mix this weekend. (This is one of those puzzlers that sounds drastically different in the GarageBand software than in the mixdown, and then looses quite a bit in the MP3 translation as well.) It has a bit of a Celtic vibe, and considered replacing the flute with a whistle, but decided against that.
As more than one person has pointed out on this site, Christmas has become quite a secular holiday. I respond to that by also celebrating Advent, which seems to have survived as a time of reflection and preparation in most branches of Christianity.

Hardware:
PowerBook G4
Flex mic

Software:
GarageBand & JamPack 4

Thanks for listening. &mdash 12/03/06 - 11:40:55 PM
I'm glad you heard the joy in this piece! I am most comfortable doing songs with voice and guitar, so this one kind of 'fell into place' for me, allowing me to free up the emotions while singing.

Honor and love in this song &mdash 12/04/06 - 02:22:12 AM
This is beautiful and inspiring to the church musician in me. Great arrangement of the vocals, and the instrument track is wonderfully supportive. You have much to be proud of here, Kristine. Thank you for this Advent gift.

exellent &mdash 12/04/06 - 07:24:01 AM
exellent... Kristy, the song and arrangment are top shelf... melodic and constructed well.... but peel that away and get to the heart of the song, and this is where your recording shines... even though you've multitracked this... it does not feel stiff... which can happen sometimes in the proccess.... it still feels full of Life... spontanious and joyous

I joke that thanksgiving is my favorite Christian holiday & that Christmas is my favorite pagan holiday... a comment on our culture... I don't want to hear Christmas songs before thanksgiving... but I certainly want to hear this now

I almost posted this without pointing out P E R F C T V O C A L S...
when you move to NJ, you have a place on my worship team, but I suspect that you won't be following me... I'll be following you!

I'm glad you had a chance to listen! &mdash 12/05/06 - 12:49:54 AM
and that you enjoyed it! Although I'm now a church organist/pianist in a church that's more traditional in its musical expression, I'd gladly join your worship team if I ever decide to move to NJ.
I've really enjoyed listening to your music a lot, too. It is great to hear all of the different expressions of the human heart on this site. After all, that's why we were made to make music.

Yule be famous! &mdash 12/04/06 - 08:53:17 AM
Wow... first I'll get the tech-nit out... yes, this sounds slightly muffled, as if the bass & treble were a little low and the midrange (boomy guitar) was a little high... but besides that, I am soooo glad MissChaos insisted I come right over here & listen. This is indeed something that could become a Classic. There's something in here that is joyful, delightful chord progressions that are satisfying and uplifting... overall, it is one of those songs you could listen to over and over. And your performance on the instruments and singing is spectacular. The words blend in nicely and are not the cloyingly sweet Christian/Christmas carol fare, but are tasteful. Anyway, definitely a Fave & a Download. Now how do we Macjammers organize a posse and get this remixed and on the air? :-)
ttfn,
Drakonis

Drak, thanks for listening &mdash 12/07/06 - 10:36:56 PM
I always appreciate your comments, because you point out the improvements that have to happen, along with kudos for things that went well. Like many musicians, i should 'take a class' in mixing, and why things sound different ways. This piece was difficult to pull together because it was recorded on a mic that's adequate for spoken word, but not for singing or instrumental work. I've since gotten a better mic, but my vocals have been quite scratchy & harsh since I had a bad cold last Spring. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the spirit of the song, and heard past the production to the music!

Christmas tune &mdash 12/04/06 - 03:01:03 PM
"Prepare The Way" is quite beautiful, Kristijo. Well performed, simple, and full of joy. This is an instant liturgical classic and I hope you find many assemblies who want to use it this Advent. (I mean this as a compliment: it reminded me of the sound the Medical Mission Sisters made in the late 60s as the Catholic Church was just getting into folk music in the vernacular. Always a pleasant sound with a catchy tune. You've achieved that here, for sure.) I'm glad I found this little piece...and your skill in writing.
Peace.
Paul

I love it! &mdash 12/12/06 - 02:26:51 PM
This has so many interesting influences, it's so much more interesting than most Christmas music, KristyJo! It's vigorous and alive, beautiful and it's got a really nice rhythm. Wonderful vocals; the minor "salvation" is really amazing - a lot of ears, mine included, would expect that to be a major, and so the effect is quite stirring. Bravo!

Great! &mdash 12/21/06 - 09:08:52 PM
I really like this. I'm used to expecting that when I hear guitar music with any religious connotation to be very underwhelmed and disappointed with extreme monotony and shoddy lyrics. I'm delighted to say that it's not at all the case here. I really liked this!

Did you write the lyrics too? :)
