Keywords:
tenor sax (10)instrumental (399)
Description:
To hear other songs and collaboration in which I play tenor go to the Dadai song page.

Last week I bought a new tenor saxophone. Except for a brief time in the 1990's I haven't played any horn since the early 1970's. Here is my first test run. My embouchure is non-existent. My tone is crappy. My fingers aren't sure where they're suppose to go. But like Fast Eddie in the movie, The Color of Money... "I'm back, baby!" Heheh.

This is just me riffing on tenor to some cool loops.

The new horn is a no-name copy of the Selmer 80 Series II and I must say it looks and plays real nice for the money. In fact, I am pretty impressed. I used to own a Selmer Paris Mark VI (considered the best even today) back in the sixties and seventies. This new horn does a pretty decent job of replacing that one for my purposes... I'm happy.

Here it is.... kinda rough, but I am having a blast.

Hardware:
Grand tenor sax, iBook G3, MobilePre M-Audio, Shure 57 mic.

Ian, well I am glad you liked it. It really is pretty rough, though. I need to practice, practice, practice... But there is going to be more tenor in my music for sure. It is the instrument I originally played many moons ago.
cheers...

Oh...I see... SAX reflections. LOL! Wow Jack...you're full of surprizes! I didn't know you played the sax. Way to rock man. Not being a brass player I couldn't find any fault with your performance...sounds wonderful to me. I hope you'll be blowin that thing in upcoming pieces and collabs!

Be well!

For 3 1/2 years now... &mdash 12/02/06 - 08:01:15 PM
I have been dreaming of getting another tenor. I finally went for it with the encouragement of my wife. These things aren't cheap, so I am grateful for her support. Suffice to say... a lot of room for improvement in this solo piece. But a few of the old fingerings and tenor connections seem to still be lodged in my brain somewhere. Just need to air it all out and put some time into it.
Thanks Mike.

Yes, sweet and funky. You get a very warm tone from that horn. Impressive, especially if you haven't played a sax in so many years. I think you do a great job playing that thing. The riffing is as I take it improvised, and that is some cool work you do.

I can dig this!

Riffing... &mdash 12/02/06 - 08:07:47 PM
Yep... all improvised. That was the one thing I really loved to do when playing tenor. I couldn't wait for the instrumental break, so I could play a sax solo. Given the bands I was in played mainly soul and motown music... that afforded a lot of opportunities.
By the way, I will probably be sending you another sax solo for the song... I have been experimenting with different reeds. The one I am using on this song gives me a better sound.

Thanks Thor...

Quite enjoyable, this brings me back when I used to play with my dad.

That tenor sax reminds me of the girl sax player on "Who's Line Is It Anyway". The sax looks big as her quite somehting to see. Thanks for showing the pic as well.

Congrats on the sax!

You've got guts Jack. &mdash 12/03/06 - 07:31:31 AM
It takes guts to pick up an instrument you haven't played in 35 years and then post a recording to MJ. I picked up the guitar after 30 years, but my playing is so terrible now that I wouldn't dare post anything. My hat is off to you Jack -- for your obvious talent and courage.

God bless,

Rick

Well, not that gutsy... &mdash 12/03/06 - 08:07:05 PM
The tenor is about the most forgiving of the woodwind instruments. And I have been practicing on and off for a number of days. As far as playing a riff, soloing and the like, I have been staying in shape with the guitar and harmonica. But I feel most at home on the tenor sax. Thanks for your nice comments, Rick.

If I don't communicate with you before the 25th, have a blessed and merry Christmas.

You always have good sense and great heart in your music, Jack... Lovely groove...

It has been a blast so far playing this tenor. Compared to the Applause, this is a much better instrument. It came with some good reccomendations and I am very pleasantly surprised at how easy it plays. It has a fine tone. Unlike the Applause guitar that needs every bit of magic one can muster, this horn is made for sounding good. Hopefully I can do just that. I always appreciate your comments and encouragement. Take care.

You got soul. You are one with that horn. You are already floating in the Land o' Nod of Approval. Sounds so lugubrious! You have a slight breathiness and dustiness in your playing which perfectly parallels your voice. Add a vocal lick to this and you have me hook, line and sinker.

You never really forget how to play an instrument. You can clearly hear it coming back to you. You start with some simple riffs, and by the end of the tune your bending notes.

I'm looking forward to your next sax track.

one never really forgets "how" to play an instrument. They just get out of shape in many ways and can't do it very well. The more I play, the more I do find things coming back. The easy things come back somewhat quickly. Aside from practicing to regain my breathing and embochure, reacquiring that second nature knowledge and feel of the fingerings, scales (mainly so my fingers will do what my brain can hear) again seems the most challenging thing. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to my attempt to regain some of my early music years.

Man, you rock. Congratulations on getting a horn (sounds very decent, and it's not what you drive, it's how you steer) - good thing is that it's like riding a bike - once you learned, you will never forget. Bad thing is that if you don't play, it comes back to haunt you for years. I tried and gave up, and I will play until they pry that darn thing from my cold fingers :)
Your tone and manner reminds me of Sade's saxman/arranger Stuart Matthewman. Very nice job. As for the chops - don't rush it. If you play for just 15min a day evry day for two weeks - but every day - you'll be in shape before you know it; always worked for me.

Yeah, it is happening slowly but surely. I can't wait each day until I get home from work to start playing. It is rediscovering a musical part of me that has been gone... too long. I don't plan on putting it away this time.

Your sax playing has always inspired me and made me want to get a horn again. So knowing you like this little demo riff track makes it all the sweeter. Thanks Ilya...

McBoy is right about that Stan Getz reference. This tenor sounds just great to my ears. I used to play a Yamaha tenor once, but had to sell it for... hmmm... financial reasons. I'm talking about 20 years ago, but hell, hearing this tune gives me this tingling feeling to run to the music shop right away. I really hope to hear more of this lovely instrument in your upcoming tracks. Cool, very cool...

Well Walter, I sold my Selmer Paris Mark VI for short-sighted financial reasons (in 1980). I wish I still had it. But having this new tenor in my hands is just great. I can recommend this one (also under the name Revere). For sure, I will be posting more tenor sax music. Thanks for listening and it is really cool that you liked the tune. Cheers...

Hey Harpster... &mdash 12/06/06 - 12:34:31 PM
Glad you like this, Curry.

Embouchure is the position and use of the lips, tongue, and teeth in playing a wind instrument. How you do that affects to tone and sound that the horn makes. In order to play well for more than just a few moments takes regular practice to build up the muscles in and around the mouth and to develop the proper embouchure for different styles of playing as well as high versus low notes. All that to say... I need to get in shape and also relearn the above.

I don't know what happened to the download button. I will email a link soon, if it doesn't come back. Thanks for listening.

Wow - this is going to be an interesting development to follow!

I would think it won't take all that long to get your horn "chops" back with regular practice.

Your macjams postings have demonstrated your skills at improvisation, as well as communicating the joy of living in the musical moment. So I expect you won't be exactly reliving the past by reviving the sax - that all of the new means as well as the old ways are going to get channeled through that big tenor instrument. Who knows what's going to come out the other end? Yes, this should be interesting to follow : >

Dang, that is a long time! It is hard to believe it has been that long. The tenor is a fairly forgiving woodwind instrument, so that helps. But I am jazzed that you stopped by to listen to an old guy pick up a memory and bring it back into the present. I did post another sax tune last night. It's a little more energetic, but with a few more flaws. But hey!... It's only music.

Yeah, you're going to have lots of fun and really sore lip muscles for a couple of weeks, but it 's a lot like a bicycle, once you learn, you never forget how it works. I play tenor and bari (mostly wind band literature, less jazz) and it's a great instrument - logical, mostly same fingerings, nice sound, fun to play. Just keep riffing along with those loops - You play with really positive energy that's fun to listen to.

a post from you. Yes, sore mouth muscles. My first instrument was the clarinet on which I got quite good. but the lure of the tenor took hold and that became my instrument of choice. So moving from clarinet to tenor was easy as far as emboucher is concerned. Even now sometimes I need to relax things a bit more cause my tendancy is too keep all the muscles too tight. But it sure is enjoyable to be playing again. Thanks for listening.
