Description:
This is a submission in response to the forum make a song in 5 minutes challenge.

This kind of challenge felt comfortable to me since non-thought-out snatches often happen while I record other things. These two little themes happened while I was recording music for a Christmas CD the other day. They appeared in between takings, like while tuning the guitar. Here they are after one and another on the same track.

.. and yes .. since you wonder ;-) the CD is a simple playful little thing to send to family an friends and to bring to some coming Christmas gigs .... and yes .. for sure; these recordings will also be posted here soon...

Hardware:
Dreadnought guitar
iMac with NO SOUNC CARD, just the line in,
tell me if the difference is considerable!

Real creative artistry... &mdash 12/05/06 - 10:00:57 AM
on display here! Incredible and wonderful exhibition of your talent with the guitar. But even more the expression of the music that resides in your heart and soul that is so readily accessible to your fingers as you play.
Another favorite of mine and another download of beautiful guitar music by Curry.

The first song is amazing, fantastic finger picking improvisation. Some flaws, here and there, but the piece is so inspired%u2026 Sounds loud and clear in my headphone. Bravo, maestro.

Drop D gorgeous &mdash 12/05/06 - 02:13:10 PM
I Love the percusive technique... More than just the strings on a guitar can make music... heh.... as usual wonderfully played.... a contrast of light and dark... the second peice drops right down.... I can imagine around your house... there must be music coming from you all the time... I have to say, I would never think that the line in could sound this good... NO SOUND CARD... what preamp did you use?

fabulous &mdash 12/05/06 - 05:02:25 PM
Did you play the first one in one take? It sounds like at least two? The bass figure and the soloing the chord strumming... Hmm how many fingers do you have ;)

Impressive Johannes. As Scott sais... there must be music coming from you all day:)

Ahhhh... &mdash 12/05/06 - 05:12:11 PM
Curry, you get so much feeling from wood & strings! You composed these in 5 minutes?? Wow. In the first tune imagined a road trip with the fam, everyone happy and looking forward to the visit with favorite relatives, and the second tune was finding no one home and they are driving back. Both tunes were, as alweays, lovely. :-)

Thoddi and Roxylee:

Well clearly since often fiddling around with different themes that shift and blend and take new forms over time, it is difficult to say what is new in a composition like this. Most composition is probably based on first a musical culture and second on the composers own experience and habits. So composition maybe can be said to be what occurrs when the composer succeedes to mix together his experiences in a way that works, and that in some respect feels novel.

Thanks a lot for you lovely comments!

which shines bright for all to see whenever you play Curry. Like Jack, this is going into my growing collection of "Curry Guitar".

God bless,

HA! &mdash 12/05/06 - 06:16:52 PM
This sounds more like 40 years than 5 minutes. I figure it's a little misdirection to say that these were composed or made in 5 minutes, since it seems like a life lived playing guitar that made these little guitar improvisations. Was this mic'ed, or did you record direct out from an internal pickup in the guitar? Sounds beautiful, I will definitely download this!

Beautiful and full of feeling! &mdash 12/05/06 - 07:34:51 PM
Excellent - only noticeable difference in sound quality was some background hiss/hum in the first track. Not enough to detract from your incredible playing though (you asked for a comment on the sound). I am amazed at how percussive your playing is in the first track, and at the power of your attack on notes towards the end of track 1. Wish I could even get close to your playing my friend - beautiful and full of feeling!

Wow! &mdash 12/05/06 - 11:15:32 PM
Thanks for sharing. The first is so catchy and the second is such a sombre contrast. 10 minutes well spent!

If I were to criticize it is that the second doll in the photo should be frowning to set match the music.

Thanks again!

As always... &mdash 12/06/06 - 07:21:49 AM
As always, beautiful, well-played music showing two very different sides to your musical personality: a life-afirming rag (!), and an introspective soliloquy hinting perhaps at a painful memory. But both are great, and demonstrate your amazing musicality.

Those dreaded words.... &mdash 12/06/06 - 08:02:06 AM
"Downloads offline. Please check back later."

Your guitar itself sounds really deep and full. You get some of the best acoustic tone in your recordings.

What comes through in your improvisations is you, which is what makes your music compelling. These pieces are pretty, but they are also 'serious', and though they are committed to tape in five minutes, they are the clear result of a lifetime of work. Ah, I see that Jim has already noticed this. Clearly, this is cheating... No fair practicing and playing a whole lifetime to get ready for the five minute challenge... Plainly, you need to learn to be sloppy, lazy and bad...

I feel I can help you there...

And plainly, since such care was taken with the music, I must forgive the smiley face graphic...

Remind me to come back and download this...

Ed

On the fly &mdash 12/06/06 - 11:04:06 AM
Nice on the fly... I love the adlib. Nothing like five minutes of Curry's heart felt love of music. Thanks for sharing a bit of it with us.

A lifetime .. &mdash 12/07/06 - 02:35:55 PM
.. of being sloppy, lazy and bad has taught me to
notice sublime playing when I hear it - plus
a nifty compression technique (a lifetime into 2x5mins)
too. I just wouldn't know where to begin in an adlib, so
I have lots of respect for those who really can. Wonderful. Hats off and thanks for sharing.

Wonderful Contrast... &mdash 12/09/06 - 07:21:45 PM

Curry - this is fabulous &mdash 12/12/06 - 09:15:38 AM
Sounds really fresh and direct, straight from the soul stuff and a great testimony to your strengths as a musician.

Cracking!

PS - didn't know that a sound card was needed for an iMac, what do you use and how do you use it?

Oh, boy &mdash 12/14/06 - 12:36:07 PM
Ten minutes... really?
Normally I wouldn't believe it, but after having heard your improvisation uploads and your overall musicality in other pieces this is not so hard to believe.
Excellent.

really fresh, interesting musical themes.
I love the first song's energy intertwined with the accompaniment. Sorry I found it so late. I want to try writing a song in 5 minutes. Sounds fun. I was really impressed with your playing and writing here.
