Description:
this was recorded in the early 1980's on a 24 trk reel to reel. it was engineered by joe barbaria who worked with the talking heads. the horn player is richie edson who is now an actor,(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Edson) but at tht time he played horn for KONK and was also sonic youth's first drummer. this was the only recording we released as a single.
Joe (the engineer/producer) got us studio time at night from 11pm until 7am for $10 an hour and that included his fee as well. We recorded 4 songs that night and remixed them a couple weeks later at Sorcerer Sound on Green St. in soho and did our own distributing.

Lyrics:
mom's a mussolini freak
stiffs 14 guys in 15 weeks
got to stand up tall
got to stand up high
got to scat gotta chant
got to never say die

those heroes
i don't know
those heroes
i don't know

same thing happened to me yesterday
big fat man got in my way
ask that man what i should say
same thing he say today

those heroes
i don't know
those heroes
i don't know
those heroes
i don't know
say let it go

see that man digging the ditch
see the man harvesting the hay
see the man driving into town
see the man who goes to space

those heroes
i don't know
those heroes
i don't know
those heroes
i don't know
say let it go

Funky bass &mdash 12/06/06 - 02:52:09 PM
You guys had something great going at that time. Cool trumpet. I like that fast playing riff on the bass. Also the perc is a good choice instead of a more simple drum pattern.

Great hearing this again &mdash 12/06/06 - 02:58:24 PM
Pretty sure I have the 7" somewhere. Yahoo! Cool idea releasing from the vault. Damn this is good.
Stella's band was practising downstairs as I went out to play music with the boys. They're getting a great sound. Kids!
BTW - Neil Young just released his first CD from the Vault - Live at the Fillmore 1970 with Crazy Horse. Killer tracks - but too short. The sick thing is that Miles Davis opened for him.

Funky guitar &mdash 12/06/06 - 03:11:36 PM
I always loved the vocals in this song. It was around 5am when kevin did them and you can here his voice is hoarse, especially on the last verse. He had that joe strummer thang goin' on. coughcough. Once again he has that scary minor chord sound creeping in and out with those madeup chords. Excellent!! (this is NOT posted by kevin) haha

Mudmen is good &mdash 12/06/06 - 04:43:48 PM
for me. I would certainly have bought the vinyl in the 80's if only I had a chance to listen to it ! Really the kind of stuff I was listening to at this period, had some compilations labeled CBGB and Max's Kansas City. Thanks for sharing, mudman.

Back in the early 80's I was a young teenager looking for the ultimate tune. Now twenty plus years later I have finally found it! Thanks Mudmen. :-)

Missed out &mdash 12/07/06 - 01:20:59 AM
My favourite mudmen song so far - really like the trumpet here and the perc section. Early 80s - the start of my stint in the musical wilderness (parenthood and a real job!). I wish I'd listened to more music then if this is what I missed!

This takes me back. &mdash 12/08/06 - 02:42:00 PM
I was going to remark on what a nice retro track this was, but I guess it *is* actually old. The psychedelic trumpet (and general horn parts) is particularly nice. Excellent stuff.

takes me back &mdash 12/09/06 - 12:25:35 PM
What a treat to find this. Totally, like totally, takes me back. Synthesizers, when synthesizers were new. Ah, so lovely-enough said about the trumpet and bass-
love the tag, 'those heroes I don't know".

muchas gracias, kelli

I love that line! &mdash 12/09/06 - 08:59:55 PM
Kevin did all the lyric writing on every song. I don't think any of us ever suggested a word to him. As far as synthesizers go...i think the moog had just hit the open market around then and, looking back, thank god we couldn't afford one. There's a lot to be said for organic, sometimes. Thanks for your comments!

Classy stuff &mdash 12/12/06 - 09:47:58 PM
It definately has an 80s talking heads sound. This was a real pleasure to listen to. Great horn work. Ended was a little odd for me; not because it was abrupt but because it should have done something...I don't know, more clever. I know I'm not being very illuminating here but I consider this nit=picking anyway. Can't understand why this didn't take off and bring you fame and fortune.

The production is TERRIBLE but the song composition is FANTASTIC! Invest a little $ in some nicer equipment. It doesn't cost much, I promise!

Cracking &mdash 12/29/06 - 08:11:30 AM
This is absolutely cracking, and several steps up from what you've already posted. It's got a raw but commercial sound - the horns remind me of 'Pressure On' by spandau ballet - in fact, the whole thing has an 80's vibe.

Expect big things in 2007 guys ....

Long Ago &mdash 12/31/06 - 12:26:39 PM
Thanks Echo! This was recorded 25 years ago and came out of the Where Were They Then vault. I don't see big things happening for the Mudmen in 2007 but hopefully they will be for the members of the band! Happy New Years all!!

Great stuff &mdash 12/30/06 - 06:01:45 AM
This reminds me a lot of the underated Aussie band Laughing Clowns (with EdKuepper)....similar kind of punky jazzy feel. Great low fi sound to this guys..I dig it!

a certain ratio of greatness &mdash 02/15/07 - 06:42:05 AM
This is the sound A certain ratio were looking for when they came to N.Y. It certainly captures the spirit of the time. And it really stands on its own as well.
