Description:
Once again my frailties have gained me some studio time... I've been down all week with a respritory infection, and I was supposed to sing for Thors project, but I couldn't croak out a note... so I worked on something that I did previously... I wasn't going to post this until closer to Christmas, but when I'm healthy again I'll have to hit the ground runnin'... I'm not sure I'll have time
The environment for this song is a huge cathedral... in the dark ages... For theatre, I picture slavery and forced labor in the darkest places... hopless and forsaken...
human history is replete with examples of
the bondage we live under... and while we here all fall down on all sides of every arguement... one thing I'm sure we all agree on... our longing for some kind of freedom that transends the relentless gravity that has pulled on us from the dawn of time... this is what the song represents for me
A heart felt Merry Christmas to you
Lyrics:
OH COME OH COME EMMANUEL,
AND RANSOM CAPTIVE ISRAEL
WHO MORNS IN LONELY EXILE HERE.
UNTIL THE SON OF GOD APPEARS
REJOICE REJOICE EMMANUEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL
OH COME THOU WISDOM FROM ON HIGH
& ORDER ALL THINGS FAR & NIGH
TO US THE PATH OF KNOWLEDGE SHOW.
& CAUSE US IN HER WAYS TO GO
REJOICE REJOICE EMMANUEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL
OH COME DESIRE OF NATIONS BIND
ALL PEOPLE IN ONE HEART AND MIND
BID ENVEY STRIFE AND QUARREL CEASE,
AND FILL THE WHOLE WORLD
WITH HEAVENS PEACE
REJOICE REJOICE EMMANUEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL
REJOICE REJOICE EMANUEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL
WILL COME TO YOU OH ISRAEL

the production on this is sooo good. so rich in texture and your vocal work is remarkable. Hands down my favorite xmass song ever. Can't wait for the dl button to be working.
Scott you are a producer extraordinaire. LOVED the synth work. Great pads, you really created a cool ambience, with minimal footprint. simply awesome [ Reply to This ]

Thanx so much... question... what is "minimal footprint" I've not heard that before [ Reply to This ]
glorious &mdash 12/08/06 - 06:44:15 PM
The build of this song is so thought through and well done. The pumping bass and the perc/drums gives an image of dramatic surroundings. A storytelling with powerful artistic effects.
And what a fabulous singer you are. The best vocals at macjams as I see it:) Fantastic hamonies. You show such professional music making skills.
I'm stunned, and breathless after this one... Fantabulous! [ Reply to This ]

Rejoice indeed! A new Scott Carmichael song! Remarkably constructed -- you build so well, and keep it interesting all the way. Love the rejoice! part. This is BIG!!! So is your talent!

One of my Favorite songs ever... I've always thought it was epic in drama... when I usd to play live we would do his song even in the middle of summer... I thought it was more than a Christmas song
thanx Rick... I feel better already [ Reply to This ]
I'll be listening to this all Christmas season... &mdash 12/08/06 - 09:55:09 PM
This is powerful and clear. Great impact, great power in the harmony voices... they sound STRONG, not tentative... The whole song sounds strong, as it should...
I think this is going to be my song of the season...

yes... great production, great instrumentation and vocals. But, Scott, you through your song get into the heart of man... his longings for something more, something better... something, it seems, all can relate to. Taking a familar hymn and making it something new and powerful...

This song has always seemed very significant to me... Our story across the timeline is truely epic, and this song captures some of that drama... If you ever get a chance listen to Chris Rice "Welcome to our World" I think you'll love it

Yes, the address is correct. Make sure you use the underscore to separate dadai_music@yahoo.com. Also is your file is bigger than 10 MB it won't allow it, so convert to to a smaller file then send.
Wonderful song...

Radio ready! it's hard to produce things in my studio, because It doen't give me a true monitor... to much room coloring... so I have to take my mixes around to different systems... a real pain... by the time I make a final copy , I'm really just not sure... but this is hi praise and I appreciate it very much

David Crosby's there from the first sung note - not a bad place to start! Absolutely astounding performance and production - I'm not usually one to be lost for words, but this goes direct to my Xmas CD once I can download it.
Fantastic stuff - as ziti would say, "deepest bow".

appropriate for the season &mdash 12/09/06 - 04:58:16 PM
The richness and complexity of your vocals and instrumental accompaniment is truly impressive on this tune.
You create a "momentous" atmosphere with the rather heavy, sombre orchestration -- as though we'd better wake up and pay attention to the message!
Playing through my MacBook and Soundsticks II speakers, the low end of this recording was very full, bordering on obliterating the higher end, which I would have liked to hear just a bit more of.
Also, the thick texture throughout this piece could be varied, thinned in spots for additional interest, but perhaps you were going for more of a sustained intensity -- in which case you succeeded admirably!
This is a very well-put together, nicely produced holiday tune, which was NOT released too early. Thanks for sharing. [ Reply to This ]
thank you Cameron &mdash 12/10/06 - 10:46:19 PM
I love the Idea of audimating the EQ on this... one of my early mixes i addressed the saturated bottom end by EQing out some of the lows... and it lost the warmth..and the big drum hits became hollow... I could select a few of the muddiest instruments and leave the rest alone... but I like the idea of varrieing the bottom through the song....
Hey maybe I could get some real French horns on this... my close friend Jesse Corti was in the Les Mis cast here on broadway... still a fav [ Reply to This ]
When I noticed this song had the &mdash 12/09/06 - 09:41:12 PM
highest rating this week I felt compelled to give it a listen .. when I opened the page and realized it was a Scott Carmichael I said to myself "well that explains that then" .... you continue to amaze me with your vocal abilities and I will never figure out how you manage to mix numerous layers of vocals in so well and it always comes out sounding clean and clear. By the time I manage to get more than 2 in one of my songs it just ends up sounding like what the orchestra sounds like when they are warming up .... you are truly a master at your craft! just stunning. I have always loved this song. The epitome of the coming of hope. You've captured the energy and the longing. You've established a global sound to do it, which is appropriate. The Peter Gabriels and Paul Simon's of the world ought to take notice.
*one small thing---you've got to get yourself a personal symphony! Your arrangement deserves so much more than synth-brass. [ Reply to This ]
Kris thank you &mdash 12/11/06 - 02:29:43 PM
encouraging comments indeed... I love this song too... I have several versions all very different... but this one gets to the heart of the song as I see it... I have a sampeler in Logic that I really don't know how to use yet... but truely, I struggled with the synth sounds... I EQed for hours... there is only so much you can do.. i would love to take your advice or get real players
thanx again Kris [ Reply to This ]
Unique &mdash 12/10/06 - 09:57:40 PM
Your treatment of this song is very original. I love the way it starts out dark and almost industrial. That makes the resolution of "rejoice", even more satisfying. The sound is huge and beautiful. All in all its an arresting piece of music. Regards [ Reply to This ]
"Industrial" yes &mdash 12/11/06 - 02:36:21 PM
That's the word I was looking for... I had invisioned the mines of Moria... Underground in Isenguard... forced slave labor in Mordor.. that kind of thing... and I wanted to contrast this against the release of "rejoice".. I was hoping it would be heard this way

And I cannot believe you hang out here with us earthly amateurs. Y'know, I'm not religious in the slightest, but a person's gotta be without a pulse if he/she cannot feel the spiritual magnificence of this. You got me. Thank you for your music, Scott. Feel better soon, (darnit!), and have a WONDERFUL holiday! [ Reply to This ]
Count me in &mdash 12/11/06 - 05:23:46 PM
with the earthly amateurs... truth is my ears were so tired in the last 5 years or so... I never listened to anything... I wanted something new... Mj has me listening again, and it's proactive not passive, because these are peers and friends... there aren't enough people close by to form any kind of writers quild... but all over the earth there are plenty of us.. and all's we have to do is log on... MJ has me working past my prime and for that I'm grateful...
I read your comment before I went to work, and thought alot about it during the day... I know what I would want to say at the risk of scaring someone away...
... Jesus wasn't much for religion either.. dealing with the religious is the only time you see him angry... and we are all spirtual... body, mind and spirit... I'm fat because I feed my body... some people here are very smart because they feed their minds... in this culture the spirit gets neglected... we starve the spirit... I think that's one reason music has the power over us that it has... we are starved... anyway my point is that as much as we are physical, and intellect, we are spiritual...
from a former sceptic, peace; Scott

your feel to this song. I like the approach. Your interpretation to this song never had crossed my mind. A plea for freedom and if we come to terms with our higher power, He has offered us salvation. The cathedrals sound relative to the darkest places had me depicting the fortunate and unfortunate, how they pass through time in parallel. It sounded as though the strongest voices were coming from the weak and desperate. Very powerful and thanks for sharing. [ Reply to This ]
