Groovin... &mdash 12/08/06 - 08:01:43 PM
Perfect marriage of song and song art. (Did you take that photo? It's lovely.) This has the moody, sometimes-hypnotic sometimes-restless energy of a city that ought to be asleep but really is not at all. I enjoyed the mix of sounds and moods you brought to this piece. [ Reply to This ]
Pictures... &mdash 12/09/06 - 08:31:28 AM
No, I did'nt take the picture, found it on the Net. Just worked on the grading. I was looking for a Paris one, could'nt find something good enough. This one met my requirements, wet sidewalks at night, space and electric colours. While not what I call a fim score, the song was made, after some days of plodding, in a quite cinematic way. Pleased you pointed this out. Thanks for you attention and again, bravo for the Ucello Magico. [ Reply to This ]
Red velvet and gin &mdash 12/08/06 - 08:16:59 PM
Reeaally groooovy. This is definitely music for chillin'! Very soft edges on all the sounds, like a big pillow to sink into. The loop sort of soaks right in to the soundscape. Nice addition of the acoustic guitar to the mix. That bass is great thoughout - you must be a player to come up with those well-placed licks?
Woah. The middle has some stomp to it! Does this mean I have to put my drink down and dance? I dig the fuzzy drums.
I don't know French Trip Hop from french fries, but this is a very cool track. Lots of interweaving parts and yet another completely unique take on the loop. French Trip Hop rules! (Did I just say that?) [ Reply to This ]
Bass &mdash 12/09/06 - 09:49:10 AM
Happy you noticed the bass. Spent hours on it. I took some lessons years ago, had a great Aria at the time, but I can't consider myself any good at it. I ended up with a combination of upwright jazz and fretless electric, laboriously looped and penned (strings as well). Thanks a lot, chikoppi, and, more over, for creating this gorgeous challenge. Had really a great time doing it. [ Reply to This ]
a calm 3AM sorta tune... &mdash 12/08/06 - 08:34:37 PM
i like the mood a lot - i also recognized, just a little, some familiar loops, but that's OK - it all fit nicely together. very nice.
and, yes, i started humming Prudence to myself at one point. (uggh. sorry, no reflection on your song, it's more a reflection of myself i suspect!)
and the pic is perfect!
is this really trip-hop? [ Reply to This ]
Prudence trip-hop loop &mdash 12/09/06 - 10:27:17 AM
No, I don't think it is. You may refer to the Sub Genre topic I sparkled in the forum for more about this concern. I admit having mischievously choose the wrong box to save the surprise for the break. According to my daughter, it started as a trip hop thing, but, at the end of the day, it is rock, where I'm surely grounded. I realized at the end I was much closer to "Dear Prudence" than planned, and was more haunted by another famous song, underlined by the opening and the outro with the bass. Guess what it is ! A small hint : the title is a remote hommage to it. I thought it was really obvious, but, so far, nobody mentionned it.
Loops are probably too much familiar to GB/MJs addicts. I'm still with the standard package, added with some free stuff found thanks to the site. I focused more on the climate and construction than originality. I don't think I'm good enough to fight on both fronts. Maybe, one day...
Thanks for stopping by and comments, smokey !

Great atmosphere and textures &mdash 12/08/06 - 10:39:59 PM
very patient piece -peace- nice voicing of the loop. I also decided to embrace it for what it is. Woah - the break - cool. Took me by surprise. Like the way you get back to the groove. Nice work! [ Reply to This ]
For what it is &mdash 12/09/06 - 10:57:08 AM
Yeah, felt it was a good way to face the challenge. I kept the tempo but played in D to keep the guitar loop (real instrument) sounding nice. I find more exciting, when listening to all versions been made, to really hear the melody. Gives, in my opinion, all the sense and fun of this great game. Thanks for your words and support. I'd love to ! If anybody wants to give a try, I'm all your(a)s ! I still remember your "funky lump" made for the previous contest, one of the first song I downloaded when I turned around (one month, seems to me I'm here since a year !) Glad you liked it ! [ Reply to This ]
Laid back. &mdash 12/09/06 - 12:22:41 AM
This is a good groove; something to lie back and just chill to. Love how its gets edgy in the middle. These contests are excellent. [ Reply to This ]
Excellent, yes. &mdash 12/09/06 - 11:34:22 AM
All the entries are great, specially yours. I'm far from being able to do such a composition and really appreciate your words. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]
Nice images created &mdash 12/09/06 - 12:39:58 AM
What a nice fat piece with some subtle textures mixed with some harder edges. I think you put the tempo almost where I put the tempo of my entry. Good stuff. [ Reply to This ]
Slow &mdash 12/09/06 - 11:44:15 AM
Yeah, the tempo was set on 80, first time for me. I enjoyed it a lot, all I did before was stupidly set on 120. Thanks for stopping by and kind words. Your previous comments on my mixes were so useful, thanks for that too. [ Reply to This ]
I discovered fun with tempos &mdash 12/09/06 - 02:17:38 PM
a while ago and I now find that many of my "compositions" are at a tempos of 100 or less BPM. Maybe it is because I am getting older and am slowing down:-) [ Reply to This ]
super trip to nowhere &mdash 12/09/06 - 10:24:10 AM
I'm glad you did not find a picture from Paris cause this one fits your music oh so well. liked how you used this guitar loopo near the middle. want to go to this motel. [ Reply to This ]
Welcome &mdash 12/09/06 - 12:25:59 PM
to Nowhereland, pal. You got the whole idea. As kinda cinematic song, it's obviously more and editing process (not surprisingly, I'm a former film editor) than a genuine musical creation. In this perspective, the break was answering to a dramatic composition. Seeing the reactions, seems it worked quite well. And, while you're here, you were damn right about electrorock. Entre les deux mon coeur balance. Salut l'ami !
PS : Next time, I may look for a picture of Grenoble. Can be very inspiring. [ Reply to This ]
Excellent &mdash 12/09/06 - 11:28:20 AM
Moody and very good mix of elements. I especially like how the guitar break in the middle built up. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, Death Nougat. &mdash 12/09/06 - 12:34:20 PM
For stopping by, words and support. You seem to be movie oriented, like I am. Touched by your delicate hommage to Jack Pallance, one of my favorite american actors. [ Reply to This ]
You captured the feeling . . . &mdash 12/09/06 - 01:35:37 PM
of Buffalo Springfield's "There's Something Happening Here," without the lyrics. Good feeling. I like this tune a bunch Youra. You've got a knack for mixing live and electronic sounds, and you're getting better with each track.

Buffalo Fields &mdash 12/10/06 - 07:29:52 PM
Yeap, you nailed it. I tried to play som guit over it, and went for the famous "harmonics", the twiiiing thing when you mute the string on 12th bar, (translation ?) like those played in that song. But I did'nt kept them, did'nt really add anything. Mostly, my main inspiration for the opening was "Walking On the Wild Side". Listen to the bass (A / D). I took off the high strings a the begining, was too obvious. Thanks a lot for your words, greg. [ Reply to This ]

Excellent work &mdash 12/09/06 - 07:58:21 PM
Very different from the other loop it IIs. I especially like the way you mixed the percussion, steady but never tedious. [ Reply to This ]
a perfect title... &mdash 12/10/06 - 12:46:39 AM
...for this song...it evokes some kind of quiet reflection, perhaps loneliness..until the middle section, which sounds like a kind of urban reality check....uh oh, here I go typing to your piece....
a great soundtrack Youra!
(I reckon some Serge Gainsbourg or Daniel Lanois-style vocals are asking to be added!) [ Reply to This ]

Thanks a lot Peacepiano, Warmvox and alfapha. Yeah, Gainsbourg-like voice would be a brilliant idea...
This contest has been such a thrill ! I have not yet listen to every challenger, but results are already beyond expectations. How I could imagine two month ago, GB3 first in hand, having not playing any music (or quite) for about 15 years, I will end up chatting with great worldwide people about a 6' song I wrote ?
I'm unsure I will progress at the same rate in the upcoming month. I start tomorrow a new film which is going to take more an more space in my life. As always, music is going to be pushed aside, but be assured I will carry on listening my friends and others here, as much as I can, and provide, for bliss, indifference or distress, my unpredictable comments. Great laid back feeling. Everything so perfectly balanced. Lots of variation as well, but never disturbing the consistency of the song as a whole. Un grand bravo de ma part!

Nearly missed it! &mdash 12/14/06 - 06:18:12 PM
Wow, how did I miss this one???!! Excellent - especially the pick up towards the 2/3 mark - very cool bass, and yes the Springfield and Prudence influences are there, but generally this is just a very moody, thoughtful piece. Late night Sydney streets circa 1976 for me. I can hear Walter singing on this for sure.

a good blend of rythm. I see you are experimenting with the speed slowing it down sometimes you hear something totaly different at different speeds. I realy enjoyed this [ Reply to This ]
