Description:
This is our official entry to the Loop it Or Lose It, Round 2. Matt tried out some fancy new equipment on this and I did probably the fastest turn-around on a vocal I've ever done. This is a work-in-progress and we plan to Orbitize it further in the future. Hope you enjoy it.

Matt here: This is largely a proof of concept song, as we were testing out a lot of new technology (some of which didn't even make it on here, check back for the next new Orbiting song to hear the rest of it.).
The deadline was an evil thing, and very likely this would be/will be a different song when we return to it. Lisa had like 10 minutes to create the 10 or 12 tracks of vocals that are on here. She is the female Flash.

Lyrics:
Thistle

Have you ever wondered
how you fall prey to sickness?
It doesn't come from a bag full of thistles,
painted deep dark purple,
with a skull and crossbones on the side.

The things that come to kill you, come with a smile.

One hand gives, the other takes away.
Beware of gifts from those
who've promised you they'll stay.

Beware

Have you ever wondered
if you planned to deceive me,
take my life and use it to heal yours,
then tear me away
where I wrapped around you
like a vine?

When you came to kill me, you came with a smile.

Your hands gave, your hands they took away.
Beware your kisses
and the promises you made.

Have you ever wondered
if I'll ever believe you,
that there's nothing now
that makes me have to?
I can run through the thistles
then with a shake, dismiss you.

When you come to kill me, you won't find a smile.

My hands gave, my hands can take away.
Beware the broken-hearted,
we often disobey.

rich and dark &mdash 12/09/06 - 02:24:32 PM
Wow, splendid start of the song. And a great pulsing beat and bass are the constant underlaying drivers. As ususal and typical, there is happening a whole lot in a short timeframe. This makes it very rich on one side, but maybe sometimes also a bit distracting (especially from the vocals) on the other side. Hey, these are dark lyrics that you're singing Lisa... I adore your vocalising so much in this track. Hmmm... speed isn't always synonim to a bad delivery. Proven right here. Top-notch production quality as always.

Thanks for saying you liked the vocals, Walter. You'll laugh when I say this, but I was pretending I was you when I sang it. I wasn't too sure I'd done okay with them, so I'm very pleased that you think they came out okay, since I admire your singing so much.

Of course, I don't have access to the cool accent!

And mint cookies - see, what a nice trip that was! This was super-tasty, it reminded me of 1982 in Los Angeles, K-ROQ 106.7 FM - that track would've owned! Great production - I agree about the verb, nuff sed. Lisa, your diva is showing - I'm lovin' it! 60 Tracks. At 60 tracks, my Quicksilver would've turned around, looked at me, grumbled "WTF?" and left the house. Serious.

I'd say you're about as bitchy as any other day, my friend. :D

I think I agree with you and Jim that the reverb should come down, especially in the first verse. As we said this was a very quickly put togther song and we're just now able to sit back and listen to it with objective ears. I appreciate the input, witchie-poo.

reverb...verb...verb...verb... But I'd be with Pie and cut it back a hair. The vocal reminds me a lot of 99.5F degrees era Suzanne Vega, maybe a dance mix of that. I'd also like a good kick drum to drive this, and bring the vocal up a bit, instruments down a bit. Lotsa cool stuff in there, though. Looking forward to a download of this (or maybe one that's more like your final version) Pretty knockout-supa-dupa for a rough draft.

Thanks for the very helpful suggestions, Jim. I'm surprised to hear you say the vox needs to come up, because I was kind of wondering if it needed to come down, but that's through headphones, so maybe it would be different on a stereo.

I think I'm with you and Pie, too. Let's go and get milkshakes.

...or maybe Delerium? (just a touch)

Fantastic lyrics! I'd love to know what was the inspiration behind the image of the thistle.

This is 60 tracks of pure delicious soundwaves. I like the loop just thrumming along very quietly in there.

You know, I'd kind of like to know where the thistle came from, too. I often figure out later, the meaning of things I've written, but I have no clue on this one, except that it has assonance with "sickness," which is probably why I chose it. I'm a sucker for taking an image all the way through a song, mostly because it makes the writing easier.

The one thing I do like about the thistle is that it plays well into the whole concept of a stalker being someone you can't shake, like a thistle burr. I guess this is sort of a pre-stalker song, in a way.

Thanks for saying you liked the song.

If this is what comes out listening to Walter... I would listen again and again:) Great vocals. Laidback and cool Lisa. I don't find the reverb distracting or negative in the mix. Works for me!

The mix with all the things going on is well taken care of. Chilled grooves with a hot bass making my head nod, and those perc things happening is getting me off my chair.

Congratulations on a fine piece of art!

There's the world as we customarily perceive it... &mdash 12/10/06 - 05:04:58 PM
...and then there is the Orbiting world...

Where we don't know what is happening, but we know what is happening.

'Beware the broken-hearted/we often disobey' is quite the cap line...

This thing is sixty layers of intense wrapped in some vine-clinging beauty... And no one else makes human love and sex sound so, well, dangerous...

And listening to an Orbiting track is like attending a great performance of a great drama... you have to go away to a quiet cafe afterwards and just let yourself understand it...let yourself believe that you will and can eventually begin to understand it...

Let it be all that it is and get over believing that you have to choose either/or...

Ed

"Let it be all that it is and get over believing that you have to choose either/or..." I'm going to have to go of and mull over that one myself. Also, don't be surprised if I rip off the comment for song lyrics. That's in the fine print.

I always enjoy your comments, Ed. Thanks so much for your ongoing support of what Matt and I are doing.

Thanks for enjoying the song. You mentioned the creative hiding of the loop. I know that Matt used it in a lot of really interesting ways. He mentioned "sounds of doom" in the early portion of the song being created by it and I know it's in the break, but I'm interested to hear more from him about the ways he used it. I hope that he'll chime in here.

[ Reply to This ]
Where is the loop? &mdash 12/13/06 - 07:52:05 AM
Well, that crashing sound of doom at the beginning is actually the loop laid over a noise sound patch. I just like it. That is the first thing I did in the song. The other instance of it is a totally CamelSpaced version that pops up in the chorus and the spaces between the chorus and the next verse. Originally, it had more prominence, but as I added tracks and the vocals came in, it sort of became a texture rather than a feature. I'm very familiar with Lisa's song "After All," which happens to use the same loop, so I wanted the song to feel different for her.

The 'verb on the vocals doesn't bother me. Great singing, Lisa, you're really sounding like moorlandt in this song :) I can feel the energy you put into your performance; the way you're dancing in your mind comes through in your voice. Matt, I really admire your ability to make this kind of top-notch ear candy. Hah, love that ending. This sounds really beautiful, nice work guys!

My Ears &mdash 12/12/06 - 02:42:17 PM
I recently mentioned to another MJer that my ears want something new... I wouldn't expect it to be Electropop... I'm old and rusting, and I can't imagine myself out at clubs (that's what electropop sounds like)... but this has a few elements that transend genre for me... the production is stelar... I'm not sure that there is too much reverb(PIE)... to much reverb usually happens because someone doesn't like there vox... I don't think that's the case here... this sounds more like a dream or detachment (observing your own life from the outside)... which is where emotional turmoil often leaves us... so it worked for me...

the second element is the lyrical content... I love the eliptical course taken to create impresssions... people can glean what meaning they will.. you've left things open.... and the atmosphere is mysterious

exxxxellllent... all around

Well, you've so many fans for this I'm not sure you can fit any more in. Not sure what's left to say - the production and vocals are excellent, as always, and it's another beautifully written, well structured track. The more songs I hear from you, the more you develop your own sound and style, guys. The electro instrumentation is thoughtfully put together, and throbs along nicely, contrasting with Lisa's languid vocal, the lyrical style more suited to folk or poetry- it kinda clashes with the music, yet works well with it. Murder and spurned love set to a dance beat - wonderful.

More more more - I can't wait to have an album in my grubbly little mitts!

wonderful lyrical content, good delivery, a decent soundbed for venting.

The music isn't anything that I would normally listen to, but it works well with the vox.

You guys are really stamping your brand all over the place and everyone seems to want one! You have a very distinct quality of music which is undoubtedly circling, revolving and orbiting planet Macjams! It has futuristic appeal to it, with a youthful energy and an infectious rhythm that grows in you the more you listen to it. Lisa's voice is a soothing balm on a burning wound, and Illuminati's music is both energizing and hypnotic... the kind of music I would like to hear at the end of the day in my favorite lounge.

This has a strong Garbage vibe to it, especially in the chorus - I'm a big fan of their sound! The synths sound great (the loop is completely reborn by a... what, arpeggiator?) and the high frequency washes behind the vocals are a nice touch. The bass break just past the halfway mark is a well-timed choice. Lots of complexity in the rhythm and ambient synths. I can see this piece consuming 60 tracks! For a rush job you got the vocals (nice job as usual Lisa!) to sit snuggly in the mix. I like the unexpected deconstruction at the end. Very cool!

Well, this song has been around for a while - but it's the first time I've heard it - and downloaded it! A great track with a fantastic production and stunning vocal. Love the lyrics - mysterious, ambiguous - delivered superbly - I hear a bit of Suzanne Vega in the chorus's especially(?) - no bad thing!

Musically there are loads of references here - UK bands like Laika and Lamb, as well as Orbital - but it still has a very unique sound. This quality really should be out there in HMV!
