Lyrics
Today

today I held a new born baby
today we buried my aunt
today I cried many tears
for the life that’s gone and the one just here
today was just as day
but I’ll remember it for the rest of my life

today I got lost in the details of his face
today I remembered how she lived
today was his first taste of air and she was just standing there
today was just a day
but I’ll remember it for the rest of my life

it doesn’t add up to some grand calculation
or put neat conclusions into tidy baskets
like party favors

today I cried so many tears
for the life that is gone and the one just here
today was just a day
but I’ll remember it for the rest of my life
today was just a day
but I’ll remember it for the rest of my life

Good ear...
The guitar is in an alternate tuning:
D•A•D•G•A•E
Kind of makes the guitar a new instrument of sorts...
Thanks for the kind words.

Unsettling, disturbing and yet so peaceful. Life is constant learning. I'm sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful song, but also a revelation and a lesson.

Proof positive
that music doesn't need to be complex to be powerful.

The story behind the song struck a chord with me- 20 plus years ago my sister gave birth to a new baby boy. My grandmother collapsed getting ready to go witness the birth and ultimately passed away at almost the same exact time as the birth, in the same hospital. What terrible, conflicting emotions we felt that day.

"Today" captures the essence of those feelings particularly well. Beautifully done!

Life...
I was a bit nervous about posting this song because it was so personal, but after seeing that you had the same kind of experience, it makes it all worth it. It's nice to know there someone else out there that has had the same kind of experience.
Namaste my brother.

Mmmm
This is a song to keep and come back to.

Especially strikes me the top notch vocals, very sensitive and well made.

A great lyrical theme that has both simplicity and depth.

Top quality in many respects alltogether!

Real
the places where music rub against us are far deeper than our intellect... our spirits rise when music is right... this scrapes deep and leaves me alittle raw... but the realness of this still lifts me... I respond on a gut level... I think it is your intuitive touch in this craft that so consistantly reaches me... it doesn't hurt that your voice is killer, and your plaing and production are spot on... but I didn't even notice that until further listens, because the song had me fixed on the storytelling

Nice work
Could have gone soft and gooey but you walked a fine line here and made it work. Reminded me that when my daughter was born, my next door neighbor ( who was only a handful of years older than me) died. I recall going to her funeral while holding my new daughter and thinking how fragile life can be.

I love the way you put together the lyrics to wrap up all those feelings and observations in such a grabbing way realy touched me. Its one of those songs that make you think and give you goosebumps at the same time. What else can I say excellent!

NIce mood
I like the lyrics and the meolody and mood are very sensitive to the subject. It works. Your vocals are nice and understated as is the guitar. The break is lovely with those minor chords coming in, and vocals. Great stuff. I like this alot.

thoughts from the bull...
this piece was submitted for the 2006 MacJams Retrospective
collection. i've never heard your music before, so being introduced
to you through this was a beautiful way to come into.

this is the kind of piece that dangerously walks the line of being cliche,
but despite teetering, it always comes back feeling fresh and unique.
perhaps the bridge is what reels it all back home and makes the
listener identify. and i think most listeners can identify.

nice depth with a minimal instrument setup. wonderful music!

thank you! glad i got to find you!

Love it
The emotion is so real.
Speechless.

Award winning vocals. The background vocals could be a bit louder. (cause my ears are getting old) But your vocals are so beautiful and well its MHO.

Cool guitar stuff. The chords are so well crafted. The interest level and anticipation is greatly heightened.

The many subtleties are captivatingly beautiful.
Stunning, smashing,eloquent,enough enough...
(did I just say stunning)
yea but i think so
ok
