Keywords:
i (92)won't (3)fly (21)birds (22)
Description:
wrote this a couple months ago and it went through a few variations until i settled on this VIC-tamized version.

Lyrics:
i wish i could fly but i'm afraid of height
i'm so grounded i only watch the sky
but my spirit soars
i'm feeling floored

chorus
why should i worry that i won't fly
so grounded no longer to get high
let the clouds control the sky
(i won't fly)

i'm no angel so i'llnever grow wings
i wonder if angels really do sing
but why should i care
since i'll never be there

chorus
why should i worry that i won't fly
so grounded no longer to get high
let the clouds control the sky
(i won't fly)

i won't sing love songs thats a distant thing
my heary is buried under emotional suffering
i'm free as a bird
in my own world

chorus
why should i worry that i won't fly
so grounded no longer to get high
let the clouds control the sky
(i won't fly)

i won't earn no frequent flyer miles
i have no delussions to confess denail
gravity has it's hold
until it releases my soul

chorus
why should i worry that i won't fly
so grounded no longer to get high
let the clouds control the sky
(i won't fly)

Great sound &mdash 12/14/06 - 12:53:41 AM
the guitars are Beatle-esque...at times. (nice combo of electric n acoustic) white album maybe when they tried to go a bit heavy. and the vocals are so slick, dripping with reality. And the background part 'im stuck on the ground' slips in so nice...very cool
excellent recording and playing.
Got it dwnd n poded
Thanx
Tim

noting the white album pretty much nails it on the head. there are quite a few songs on that album that used descending chord patterns. as does this song. at the heart of this there is the acoustic that plays all the chords with a open g throughout as in blackbird. there backing vocals are usually overlooked because they fit so well. thats something i've been studying al lot of recently.
Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!

More.... &mdash 12/14/06 - 07:52:49 AM
...of that Matthew Sweet and Richard Lloyd sort of Beatles sound in both the vocals and the multi-cascading-jangle-and-crunch of the guitars.

There are some little bits where the time seems to slip or something, like at the chorus "I won't fly" line... Something happens in the drums that I can't put my finger on at times...

But on the other hand, this is a song I'd like to learn myself. Can I have the chords and tempo and stuff?

I really have gotten to the point where my ears prick up when I see there's a new Vic Holman song...

believe it or not i was almost set to post this just one acoustic and one voice. i chickened out. at the heart is the acoustic is fun to play. i play it often when kicking back. so i'll send you the info. i'm more of a hybrid picker, never could get the fingersytle down. so i think if you give it a go, you might give it something more! there are some tricks of using volume swells and delays that are layered in there that give a bit of the behind the beat. but we both know i tend to do that.

I second that emotion!!! &mdash 12/14/06 - 04:38:45 PM
I empathize completely with the sentiments expressed herein my friend. You have topped yourself yet again Vic. I only pray you can keep up this momentum (and not burn out like I seem to have...at least temporarily). This is a real treat. Beautifully played and exceptionally well sung. If there was a desert island MJ disc it would be a criminal act to exclude this tune.

Be well!

i've got work &mdash 12/14/06 - 09:40:51 PM
burning me out as is. i've had this song for a couple months. recorded a few different ways. but wasn't there. last saturday i put the just a acoustic and vocal and was about to leave it as such. but then... i just recorded each track in in order (15) and bam done in about two hours. took longer to mix though. and yeah if its an island to go to it will have to be by boat...because i won't fly! rest up. you got more tunes in you waiting!

Nice Tune &mdash 12/16/06 - 10:25:45 AM
I like the stark realness of the lyrics, egoless and honest...
The chorus is cool, real good production, this songs strongly reminds me of Dylan in the seventies. the guitar is excellent as usual, good job.

i don't know why it is. but when the power goes out i tend to write something more contemplative. luckily i don't have any other hang-ups. but this made for a good story. thanks for taking the time!

Fly Boy! &mdash 12/17/06 - 08:54:43 AM
A cracking tune with lovely crunchy guitars - reminds me a little of the auteurs. Your voice realy does it for me - it's so distinctive.

Great stuff

theres a good dose of clean and overdriving guitars and some cool effects i'm into, playing different parts. and thanks for the vocal compliment, i think i'm getting better, but i wish i had a better range though.
Thanks again. very much appreciated

my flights been grounded &mdash 12/17/06 - 02:10:40 PM
thanks, i've been exploring on how to get the"vics" into the mix, backup vocals are tough to squeeze in. i'm wanting to develop that more, but i wouldn't expect a a cappella tune anytime soon. thanks for the time to listen and comment, keep your feet on the ground and reach for the stars.

puuurfect production - wall o guitars sound so fine - and your voice tucks right into the mix. this is a real high point Vic - no pun intended. very stately pace and use of the mini coda. cool descending riff on "gravity has it's hold" - smart stuff. wow.

quite a few guitars yes. and to think i was about to post a version of this with one acoustic and one voice. but it needed a little something. recording time was quick. but it takes more time to mix it. i think i'm finally getting the idea of how to weave it all together. so i'm flying off that.

Fly baby Fly &mdash 12/17/06 - 01:53:12 PM
You have that certain something a uniquiness that says
Vic. Agian your pushing the bounderies of Vicland. Did you play the drums agian on this (amazing). There is one roll that you did that was off but besides that very cool. Are you realy afriad to fly?

i think i'm more of a filter of all the music that i grew up on. it's taken me a while to realize that there is a thread to my sound. when you're on the inside you don't hear as other people do. then again your new direction has the same thing going very distinct. the drums where a mix, the main loop i used for a click beat track i would of played it identical anyway, so there are parts i filled in. i forgot to fix that short roll. doh!. if planes flew ten feet off the ground i would be fine with that. more of a vertigo thing.

nice vocals Vic! the whole track stands out. Nice use of back up vocals. well produced but you didn't sacrifice that live full band sound in the performance. very cool chorus

i try to keep "the band in line" they haven't argued..yet! i've really been getting into developing background vocals more. i think this is getting to be almost like a second job....without pay. darn

Sorry, but as I just came back from U2 live (w/Pearl Jam as opener) in Hawaii.. Couldnt help thinking that this masterpiece is as great as theirs.
I especially love your guitar and vocals.

Thank you!

Great Sound, as Always. . . &mdash 12/23/06 - 02:05:53 AM
The guitars and the overall sound is great. You have a good ear for blending the guitars into the overall mix. I really like the chorus.

It appears that you have too many words in a line on occasion. I'd suggest that you just drop a word or two and your lyrics would flow as does the rest of the production.

thanks very much &mdash 12/23/06 - 01:38:27 PM
i hope as anyone, that sound quality gets better as i go along. sometimes i feel like i'm playing the computer more than playing guitars. i'll have to re-listen on the lyrics, sometimes i get narrative, i think. Thanks for the time to comment and listen! always good to hear from you.
