Description:
I tried writing this song in the tradition of songs from the 1930s and 40s. There's a touch of sentiment in the song but, hey, it's a Christmas song--ya gotta have a bit of sentiment, right?
The initial spark for the song originated from my mom complaining that I seldom came home for Christmas after I'd moved to California. (Hey, ma, it's all the way across the country, cut me some slack.) For me, the lyrics take on a special significance now with all the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. For those reasons, it seems to me that the song would come off better if it was sung by a woman but, hey, you're stuck with me, I'm afraid. (If someone would like to re-record the vocal perhaps we could do a rush job and repost--or wait and put up a new version next year.)
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the song. And Happy Holidays.
Lyrics:
I HEAR 'MERRY CHRISTMAS"
Winter blows the swirling snows past the shopping crowds.
They hustle and they bustle and they do the merchants proud.
Christmas lights they flicker bright and spread the season’s cheer.
But you know it wouldn’t be Christmas without you here.
I hear “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.”
But how can I celebrate without you here?
No, how can it be the holidays without you near
To give your gift of love for another new year?
Christmas Eve, well, I believe there is no better way
Than to give the love you live throughout the holidays.
And the year should end with all your friends gathered very close
Raise a glass to the year that’s past and to the new one drink a toast.
I hear “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.”
But how can I celebrate without you here?
No, how can it be the holidays without you near
To give your gift of love for another new year?
Now, listen, as snow glistens, come back to me on this holiday.
A candle on the mantle, burns just for you on this Christmas day.
I hear “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.”
But how can I celebrate without you here?
No, how can it be the holidays without you near
To give your gift of love for another new year?
This Christmas, be with us.

Holiday song. In assembling my list, I have tried to remember to mark my favorites (all of them:) but I've not had time to comment on every single one... And I've noticed I have missed clicking the favorites button to add some... Thanks for this fine tune, JT! . - Harold [ Reply to This ]

That was so very delightful! &mdash 12/18/06 - 03:59:57 PM
Awww... -- I sure wish that I weren't listening on such craptackular speakers, but even so, I really enjoyed this and can tell that a lot of focused work work went into it. Very nice work. I'm sorry that I can't comment on the quality of this right now, but from what I can hear, I'd say that you've done this a few times. I'm not so much into Chrismas, but this made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I'd even venture to say that it was a chrismas cheer that tingled inside. Thanks for that. Dion [ Reply to This ]

Thanks so much for your comments. Yeah, I know what you mean when it comes to Xmas music, it can get to be a bit much sometimes. Maybe that's why I penned this tune...something new.

picked it for Christmas listening &mdash 12/18/06 - 08:38:45 PM
I was going through some Holiday submissions (there are so many!) and was trying to narrow it down to the 15 best songs that I would like to put on CD and listen in my car during the Christmas season. Needless to say, this song easily made the cut! Thanks for this Christmas tune! [ Reply to This ]

Nice &mdash 12/18/06 - 09:37:59 PM
Always like hearing original (not the same old re-hashed stuff like I did) Christmas music.
Cool guitar effects. Minor nit, Sometimes I thought I heard a slight (very slight) timing glitch. Probably just my old ears playing tricks on me.

Thanks so much for listening. I'd say the fault is more likely with my fingers than with your ears. Glad you liked the tune.

Cool Christmas tune with the right mood for the season.
I got a bit curious to check out your stuff from the forum post you have. I checked your webpage (www.jtmorrow.com) and I am very impressed with what a stunning good artist you are. Really great illustrations in such a high pro quality.
Also having John Cleese among your clients must be quite something:)

Glad you enjoyed the tune. And thanks for the kind words about my art work.
Yeah, I worked with John Cleese about a year and a half ago, doing the art for his website. I got to fly down to LA and meet him, which was a fun experience. I was contacted to do the job by Ruth McCartney (Paul's kid sister) who runs a big media outlet in the city. (God, it sounds like I'm name dropping--forgive me!) Anyway, I heard stories of how John Lennon taught Ruth to ride a bicycle when she was small and how, in the 80s, when she was struggling to make it as a pop star, she toured Russia and rode on planes where they used ropes for seat belts. Really amazing stories.
Cheers!

Curious like Thor &mdash 12/21/06 - 12:58:46 AM
Very unusual Christmas song - with some very weird timing things going on (in a good/interesting way). The delay on the guitar (?) is maybe the culprit - the way you leave beats out really threw me at first.
I think I really like it, although I'll need a few more listens before I commit : )
... a few more listens later ........... yep, I like it. This would have been a 10 for originality for sure.
Have a happy holiday and a great 2007 JT.
Peace,

I really appreciate you stopping by and commenting.
Actually this song was an instrumental piece for a while in which I'm finger-picking like mad, going up and down the neck of the guitar, trying to play both melody and rhythm in one fell swoop. So, it has this wierd jaunty rhythm. Maybe I should have played the rhythm and melody separately in a more traditional style when I recorded this but I'm so used to the sound that it's a part of the song to me.
Anyway I'm glad the sound grew on you after a few more listens.
Have a great holiday season,
JT

Macy's would be proud &mdash 12/22/06 - 12:54:32 AM
I'm listening and getting images of shoppers in an old department store. They smile as the holiday music is performed on the bandstand. It's echoing down and around them. Man their teeth are white. %D
