Description:
Silent Night, by Joseph Mohr & Franz Gruber, is for me the ultimate Christmas song classic. This offering is a wish of good tidings to all the MacJammers out there from Rob and myself.
[my apologies for deleting the original posting... minor issues... but I took the opportunity to remove a guitar clinker that was bugging me and remixing some of Rob's vocals. This version, I think, is an improvement]
vocals: Rob and Jack
guitar, bass, keyboard: Jack
Hardware:
iBook G3, M-Audio MobilePre, Shure 57 mic, Applause AA14 acoustic, Yamaha PSR293 keyboard, and RC's high tech recording studio. : )
Software:
GarageBand 1

Tom Waits meets Dylan meets ... um... a Southern Baptist service? :-) This has soul. I love it. Brilliant work, you two. [ Reply to This ]

Men in the hole, gazing heavenward &mdash 12/15/06 - 01:35:21 AM
Love the deep man sounds. Woah. Nice scripture reading. A holy hymn delivered with authority and grace by rugged souls. A fantastic finish. Heavy Lift Caroling -- a new genre? Great collaboration, fellas. [ Reply to This ]
I like that.... &mdash 12/15/06 - 01:42:55 AM
"delivered with authority and grace by rugged souls." That works for me. Thanks Rich. As I type this I am listening to our PT version of "Gloria." Earthly/heavenly men at work...

You and Rob are great! &mdash 12/15/06 - 07:50:09 AM
I love the reading by Rob while Jack is singing. Very moving. and the chorus rocks. Jack's guitar and keyboard, lovely. Everything in this song is creative and pleasing to my ears. Faved & downloaded. My MJ Christmas CD is going to be really special this year. :-) [ Reply to This ]
Music as a fortress &mdash 12/15/06 - 10:49:34 AM
The best versions of this tune, I think, make me think of someone singing as bombs are falling all around, like an island of hope, faith as necessary denial, belief as a wall of dignity, music as a fortress. I see you guys on a hilltop, holocaust streaking down setting the valley on fire, making shadows of your certain forms, a campfire writ large. The unexpected Joe Cocker moment at the end was very cool. Made me think maybe you're singing just outside a jail window, in the alley, the light of burning garbage in a barrel throwing shadows on the wall, warming hands... [ Reply to This ]

"The unexpected Joe Cocker moment at the end was very cool. Made me think maybe you're singing just outside a jail window, in the alley, the light of burning garbage in a barrel throwing shadows on the wall, warming hands..." When Rob sent me his vocals I didn't know what to think. As I mixed everything in it became apparent what he was shooting for and, obviously, the bullseye he hit.
Thanks, Tobin.

chills in the fade, and that &mdash 12/15/06 - 01:03:55 PM
Rarely happens... in the fade I got chills... just the right emotion.. Love the atmosphere, and soul... Great offering Jack & Rob exellent, also... I'm used to hearing soothing sanitised versions of this, a little too sweet... this has a sence of urgency, I can't quite put my finger on where it comes from...but I like that it hits me this way... The fade.... &mdash 12/15/06 - 07:45:23 PM
Scott, it is gratifying to hear your take on the ending fade. Rob kicks this version of SN to deeper level with his vocal scats. I spent more time on that part of the song than any other... keyboards... adjusting levels... tweaking. It's my favorite part of the song. Rob's reading out of Luke is my second favorite part.
Really glad you stopped by...

I know I left a comment &mdash 12/15/06 - 05:07:01 PM
I don't know what happened to the comment I had left earlier. I was saying that at the point the narration came in, it gave me the goose bumps. This is definitely one of my favorite classic Christmas songs. The ending had a nice twist and was unexpected. Thanks for helping bring out some Christmas spirit.

Amazes me &mdash 12/16/06 - 07:23:21 AM
How new versions of these carols keep coming out, fresh even over the centuries. I hear a little Johnny Cash in this one along with Walls and Dylan ( and the Southern Baptists). Good work and Merry Christmas! [ Reply to This ]
Apologies! &mdash 12/18/06 - 04:26:27 AM
I really like the open strings throughout - gives a "different" sound which works really well. I agree with Tobin about the image this evokes. To be honest, when I first listened, I wasn't sure I liked it, and gave up before it got going - I'm really glad I came back to it. There seem to be some timing glitches (or maybe it's just me), but rather than detracy from the performance, simply add to it's authenticity. Great to see one of these songs that come around every year done with a bit of imagination.
Peace,

Yeah, rock on, Jesus! &mdash 12/19/06 - 01:17:39 AM
I was left speechless towards the end... the wailing punctuates this song with a rock edginess that defines the entirety of the song. There is a haunting atmosphere of sadness and poverty yet it seems to be imbued with resilience and hope.
Thumbs up, way up for both of you! This certainly goes to the higher ranks of Christmas submissions this year or of any year in Macjams. This one is definitely going to my Christmas Macjams CD. [ Reply to This ]

Soulful Xmas &mdash 01/04/07 - 03:16:42 PM
Dadai - what a wonderful version of this classic. Lovely simple guitar, and some tremendous singing, right from the bottom of the boots.
Great stuff, guys.

to drop in and listen... and to leave a comment. Such a simple yet wonderful classic song. I have been taken aback by the response to our take on it. RC gets much of the credit for that. Talented dude, he is.
Thanks...
