Description:
I usually fail miserably at trying to sing Christmas Carols (and I'm sure this one is no exception) ... but in the spirit of Christmas I thought I would offer one anyway. The musical score (unfortunately) is a karaoke instrumental of unknown origin ... (um ... er ... ) .... the vocals are all mine, however. I thought I would try to see if I could be the ENTIRE "Variety Show" .... so I did all the parts ... watch out for that high note at the end ... I did manage to mute it somewhat with a logarithmic out command thingy. As usual there are pitch issues ... timing issues ... serious mixing issues .. but AH HECK ... its Christmas ... so here is my Holiday offering.

Lyrics:
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on, our troubles will be miles away

Here were are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years we all will be together
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

.. to drive you to drink (the picture that is) cheers ;o)
These xmas songs are still good today: old time Christmas cosy fire-side, togetherness and non-denominational lyrics, back when "Make the Yule-tide gay" just meant happy etc ...

Have a good one Alannah and thanks for sharing.

... with all my talk about Beer ... I thought it was only fitting that it should make an appearance at Christmas too .... originally I was looking for a picture of a bottle of beer wearing a Santa Hat ... but I found this one instead. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

over the years at Christmastime. And now this becomes the version to play each year. Alannah, you singing and vocal interpretation of this song is a good as any I have ever heard. Dripping with feeling and an appropriate pinch of nostalga. Love this...

... I'm honoured to think that I will now be part of your Christmas tradition. I love Christmas Caroles ... just have never really been able to sing them very well ... (I think most of them are in a key too high for me)... Enjoy the Season!

I actually do hate to be a spoilsport, but... &mdash 12/16/06 - 11:59:25 AM
as a songwriter...I like to give the original songwriters credit. It was written by Hal Blane and Hugh Martin. Here's some background on this song, which actually is still covered by copyright: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Have_Yourself_a_Merry_Little_Christmas

Great singing to canned music! I hope I don't come off as a Scrooge, though.

well, a little holiday spirit is okay, but... &mdash 12/16/06 - 09:52:00 PM
... I get afraid that if people start posting covers of Christmas songs that are still covered by copyright, that it will give the impression that it's okay to post covers in general here at MacJams. Did I miss some change in the site's policy? Or do the same rules not apply to all? Here's a relevant portion from the site's FAQ: "Please note that all songs submitted to MacJams must be the original works of the submitting artist, or the artist must have permission to use any portion of the song and upload it to the Internet. We do not allow posting of any song which is a cover of another song for which permission of the original author has not been given. Complete requirements are contained in our Terms and Conditions"
...and it's not such a big secret that this is a cover that you didn't write, as you said in your description it's a very popular song with a gazillion versions out there. Way to belt it out, though!

copyrite!! copywrong!!! $10.000 to sing happy birthday &mdash 12/17/06 - 04:32:09 AM
it's christmas there's no copyright on Christmas. This is how bad things are the song Happy Birthday is now copyright and if it is played on television there is a fee of $10.000 to perform this song . What the fee on Christmas

[ Reply to This ]
Just to explain; you can write your own song &mdash 12/17/06 - 09:54:02 AM
There is no fee for using the word Christmas, and cover songs are perfectly legitimate, but as a songwriter myself, I just like it that the original writer gets credit, and if the song is still covered by copyrights, that applicable royalties get paid to the original songwriters or their estate. Alannah is not making any money by posting this rendition on MacJams, of course, but there are advertisers on the site that generate revenue, so that the organizations that are entrusted to collect royalty payments should indeed be entitled to approach the site and request the appropriate royalty fees for allowing covers. I hope this isn't offensive to bring up the commercial aspect of the problematic nature posting of covers of Christmas songs, but after all, Christmas is one of the most commercial of our holidays. AND I hope you all are having a happy one!

nice mood... &mdash 12/17/06 - 02:56:27 PM
Alannah, your voice lends an even deeper sombre mood and atmosphere to an already beautiful instrumental. It's a romantic lounge act that you might listen to on a dinner date!

Jim's point about copyrights is well taken. We give recognition to the creators of this music, and we also respect that by not profiting directly from it. So Allanah, time to cough up back some of that million bucks you earned from this! ;-)

Conversely, will the authors of this song pay you back, too, for vocally enhancing the song? Just being funny here and trying to lighten this whole royalties issue. Jim, I think we all get the message and, sincerely, thanks for the professional reminders.

Anyway, merry Christmas, Alannah. I'll take you to dinner at Second Life, and you sing this song over there, how about that? LOL. But you gotta pay some virtual royalty. Deal?

... is there a Karaoke Bar at Second Life ??? I'm still tryin to get a First Life here .. haha If I had a few million dollars would I be siting here at home on my computer - I would be sitting in a fancy restaurant listening to someone ELSE sing !!!!

Enjoyed your rendition &mdash 12/18/06 - 11:08:02 PM
This is a really nice rendition (can I say that in this context?) Alannah - it's really nice hearing you do this type of stuff. You have an amazing voicebox! My friend Mr Macca (Macaudion) nailed it - I normally hate most of the songs we hear at Christmas (mainly because I've heard them done so badly so many times), but versions like this (and Dadai and RC's Silent Night) make me sit back and enjoy them (a lot). Have a safe and happy Christmas and a wonderful 2007.

Ok &mdash 12/19/06 - 11:53:04 AM
Your singing is spot on for this. My only nit is that, I dunno, I guess maybe when you tried to EQ the original vox out, it didn't get taken out all that well. It distracted me from an otherwise stellar performance.

HAHA &mdash 12/19/06 - 04:12:06 PM
You're assuming I tried to EQ the vox out ... hahahahaha .... yes this IS the problem isn't it ... it is the problem on all my songs ... my lack of knowledge when it comes to EQ and compression ... something I am in the process of learning though ... thanks for the compliments anyway (despite it's issues).

Wow &mdash 12/21/06 - 02:38:20 PM
Your delivery with its touch of weariness (at least to my ear) makes the song even more resonant and heartfelt. Beautiful job.

I too wondered about the copyright issue, however. Seems this is a very gray area.

I think I may be a little weary ... hahahaha Christmas is also a hectic time of year with so much to do .... thanks for the listen and the comments ... I'm not ignorant about the copyright or cover thing ... I just figured that since a lot of people were doing it with Xmas songs ... maybe this was the one exception (in the festive light of the season and all) ..... apparently not everyone figures the same way.
