Description:
I was looking through a Christmas songbook and spotted two tunes that simultaneously got stuck in my head. I mentioned to my attention-deficit husband Pooey that I could make a cool song by combining the two together! And so Jimmy said "Let's go record." I said "My voice can't handle it." (We sang carols at an old-folks home today and we had to yell, AND I am sick). So Jim said "Let's do it anyway."

So, I arranged "Ding Dong Merrily on High," and "Good King Wenceslas", played mandolin and sang, and Jimboborini (you know him as Pooey) played guitar and lent his producing mastery to get this song done in just a few hours, all the while neglecting our three children. We hope it was worth it.

Merry Christmas all you beautiful Macjammers!

Lyrics:
Google "Ding Ding" and "Good King". We left out verse 4.

Hardware:
eMacaroni, Lisa's beautiful little Epiphone mandolin, Jimmy's beautiful Gibson J-45 (apparently it turned 20 last month), and a mic, and a mysterious grey box that sits next to the confuser.

Software:
Microsoft Instant Christmas Carol 2006 v3.6 for Windows XP v4.5 (with updates and fixes in place)

The arrangement and mix were excellent.

Thanks for adding this piece of festive fun to the site.

Have a great Chrimbo and 2007.

R.

PS - The guitar and player have both matured well (for 20 years).

I dunno, after listening, this sounds like it was meant to be, and I can no longer remember each song individually! Beautiful singing and playing!

Two Carols &mdash 12/17/06 - 02:04:32 PM
Thanks so much. These songs are two of my favorites and it just seemed natural to dissolve from one into the other. Thanks for listening!

such... &mdash 12/17/06 - 12:45:32 PM
...a delightful tune, so naturally sung and played. I love the new arrangement as well... it sounded like a perfect fit to me (although, I can't say I know the originals too well).

You guys sang carols together for the old folks? How sweet!

Carolling with the seniors &mdash 12/17/06 - 02:15:17 PM
Yes, we did Christmas carolling with the seniors yesterday. Although I can't really take much credit for the idea. I have to thank my friend Bill for organizing the event. We enjoy having a little venue for playing and trying new things, such as Jim's modulation-mad version of Deck the Halls!
Thanks for listening.
These are two of my favorite songs, as old-fashioned as they are. I read somewhere that Good King Wenceslas was written in the 14th century! I'll need to verify that, but it's good fun anyway!

Lots of energy! &mdash 12/17/06 - 09:28:21 PM
Great pacing for these two - could almost be done as a partner song until the 'Glo----' and the 'Brightly shone'. Good King Wenceslas was a Bohemian king who was very compassionate toward the poor and took good care of all his subjects. His feast day falls in December.
Because they are well known to me, this was an 'instant' favorite.
Oh - and neglecting three children while you're doing something you enjoy is a long held and revered custom in our household as well!

Neglecting children &mdash 12/18/06 - 08:22:02 AM
Thank you for the comment, and the info on King Wenceslas.
I shouldn't say we were actually neglecting the kids, but it was more like they were watching a movie and we said "we'll be upstairs recording kids, ok?" And their reply was - nothing. They were ok with it!

We sure enjoyed working on this. It was really fun.

I'm still learning how to get a good mix (or at least what I think sounds good), so I appreciate hearing that it sounds good to you too.

Thanks again!

Mandolin &mdash 12/18/06 - 06:49:17 PM
Thanks Miss Chaos! I absolutely love my mandolin. I've only had it since July, but it's so addictive to play. It's really hard to put down. So I've really enjoyed recording with it!

Not when it sounds like this!

I also like the mix, which is nice and bright, very holiday-appropriate. The instruments sound amazing together. Such a rich mixture...just like the two of you!

Thanks Magritte!
There's no reason for anyone to get sick of holiday music. THere's so much you can do with it. And I have to admit, the older and more ancient the tunes, the more fun they are to spice up!
I have a wonderfully talented husband who plays off of me so well. Kudos to my Pooey!

Thanks for the comments. And yes, it's a confuser. Well at least to me it is. Pooey knows all about it though!

I really love the piece. Right from the moment you suggested it I enjoyed playing it. I really dig your choice of chords on the mandolin during the Glooooooooooooria. And you're dang cute too.
