Description:
Last Christmas I posted an earlier recording of Marche Militarie No1. To give myself and an excuse for posting this years recording too, I tell myself that I like it so very much — a favourite among arrangements I've made of pieces not originally made for guitar — also think and hope this recording is better.
Why posting a militairy march for Christmas? Strangely enough; in Sweden this one is becoming one of the Christmas standards. Most people say when I play it; "ah tomteparaden" ... "ah the goblins parade".
The reason is that Walt Disney used it in his movie “Santa's Workshop” (released 1932). And that movie has been shown on public service tv EVERY Christmas eve at 3 PM as long as I can remember. In the end of the movie all the toys crafted in the workshop are marching in to Santa’s big sack, before being distributed to children over the world. This theme is playing in the background while the toys are marching. It all looks very funny, and after seeing it a couple of times most Swedes have come to develope a joyfull attitude to it, and most become very surprized when they hear it is a militiry march, composed by Franz Schubert (1797-1828).
Merry Christmas everybody!

Very fine &mdash 12/17/06 - 07:03:31 PM
It doesn't sound like an obvious military march ... it's got too cheerful a bounce in its step and some flamboyant wanderings in the melody ... but it's certainly lovely, and expertly performed. Always a pleasure to listen to your guitar. [ Reply to This ]
tomteparaden indeed! &mdash 12/17/06 - 08:59:46 PM
Thanks for this Curry - another addition for my Christmas CD. Excellent performance as always.
All my very best wishes for you and yours at Christmastime, and I hope you all have a fantastic 2007.

Military? &mdash 12/18/06 - 01:35:39 AM
Yes it does seem too light to be a military march... I was thinking that maybe it's for marching home after the war.. but the reality of war is so dark and sad, that I think Schubert might have been naive... in a perfect world this music would be about our daughters first dance recital or our sons first baseball game...
Or our Friends' ability to play wonderful guitar music... once again you have a casual mastery of the moment... ans you have me thinking about ribbon mikes.... hmmm [ Reply to This ]
Excellent stuff &mdash 12/18/06 - 05:43:21 AM

A delight! &mdash 12/18/06 - 07:44:13 AM
Delightful! A really wonderful arrangment played with skill and joy. You make it sound so easy, but it ain't! I've only heard the piano version, but your version has a playfulness to it that I don't usually associate with this piece. Great job! [ Reply to This ]
Happy! &mdash 12/18/06 - 08:47:01 AM
I can picture the dollies and the toy sodiers dancing under the Christmas tree, taking a deep bow at the end. Magnificent playing, and your joy is evident. God bless you, brother. [ Reply to This ]

Well that certainly lightened my heart! I'm sure that you've heard just about every superlative known to man, in discribing you mastering of the geetar, so I will almost spare you here...
Really, thanks Cori, that was really a special little treat. I thoroughly enjoyed the heart medication -
Happy Holidays to you and your family sir! Enjoy a safe Chrismas. Dion [ Reply to This ]
Speaking as an old school goblin, &mdash 12/18/06 - 07:32:24 PM
....whenever I'm steppin' out in a Christmas-y way, this is just what I'm looking for to put spring in my step...
I will admit that marches (and ragtime) are not on my personal 'favorites' list, but I always find something cool in the things you choose to play, and the way that you play them...
And yes, let me also wish you the merriest of Christmases and a wonderful new year...

orchestra at your fingertips! &mdash 12/23/06 - 03:28:50 PM
Your guitar playing always amazes me, as well as bringing a smile.
This is a great arrangement of the classic tune. You make the guitar sound like an entire orchestra.
It's perfect for the holidays and ANY time.
Blessings to you and your family this Christmas, the New Year and BEYOND! [ Reply to This ]
First- the album Art is great- &mdash 12/24/06 - 10:28:41 AM
We have this cartoon on video tape, and I drag it out, blow the dust off of the tape player, and watch it every year. Your musical arrangement brings all of the playfulness, excitement and anticipation that is in the cartoon at that point. I enjoyed your playing of this last year, when I was a newbie on MacJams, and I enjoy this rendition, too. Merry christmas! [ Reply to This ]
