Description:
Finally the complete mix of my christmas song this year, with contributions from several macjammers is made. These collabs is quite challenging to mix. Small differences in timing and various levels on the recordings. But I think it was great fun to put together, and I think it turned out well:) Hope you do too.
Here are the macjammers that has contributed to this:
Alannah vocals
Dadai sax
Jiguma vocals
Scott Carmichael vocals
Selters vocals
SlimGirlFat vocals
Moorlandt vocals
Bent vocals
And myself. I've done the guitar, bass, drum programming and keys. I also play some snippets of harmonica in here.
The picture is from a lighthouse not far from where I live. It's called Feistein.
Lyrics:
Well here I am, searching through words.
Words reflecting myself.
And what comes down on paper is who I am.
- Do you think, we could be friends.
I hope, that you, will join me tonight.
Let's make a bridge from pier to pier.
Hold hands, be strong, be with me tonight.
Let me be - a friend.
Let no one, stay, outside tonight
Let our hearts make a chain,
Let the world know we all are one.
Let no one - stay - outside tonight...
----
Here is the contribution from macjammer "Bent" with his additional lyrics:
In a time such as this,
no unity exists
to bring together,
that's what we need
souls to unite,
and to join, without fear
making all us - not them
----
Moorlandt wrote the verse he sings alone and it goes like this:
there are many words of wisdom
that were sculptured in our mind
there is good and bad
but no one has the truth
we are millions on this planet
let's just try to get along
and maybe tonight
I'm close to you
---
Jiguma sings this:
There are times when it's easy to go.
There are times when we should stay.
These are times, right now,
when we all need a friend.
It's not the time to turn them away.

Hey, how'd you guys do that... &mdash 12/18/06 - 05:32:10 PM
Awww...
I'm just saddened that I not at home and on my system
Even so, I can hear that his is just beautiful - Truly
I can really feel the spirit of this wonderful effort
Okay so now, I'm crying - Who'd a thunk that something being played on a contraption that can only poorly impersonate what a sound might be like, that it could make a person cloud up and rain so...
I hope that you guys are all bowing together, because this was really a special treat. Thanks to everyone who had a voice in this.
And as well, I hope that each and everyone of you and your family a a safe and joyous holiday.
God..., did I just say joyous - See, that's just how good this is...

And reading these warming words there is no doubt anymore:)
Your reviews/comments are the best Dion. If you really cried a little listening to this, it warms my heart so much I guess I'm responsible for global heating at the moment...
It was a real pleasure working with all of these talented macjammers. Having such powerful material to work with it had to be something special. I am very grateful for everyone who joined me in this. Lets make it a tradition:)
Thank you. You are a true friend!

Seriously, though. This is a fantastic and soulful song created from some of the most talented musicians I've ever known. It gave me goosebumps. This is more than a song, you all. It's a message and a prayer and a lesson. Thank you so much for coming together and sharing this. I'm awestruck.

.. what a daunting task it must have been trying to blend all those different vocals in there ... timing .. key etc. .. but you did an EXCELLEBNT job .... I am happy to be a part ot it this year. Long Live This HOLIDAY Tradition ! [ Reply to This ]
not daunting at all &mdash 12/19/06 - 04:39:48 PM
Really, it was pure pleasure all the way. You all gave me such good material to work with, that I did this final mix in one night. Having put the contributions along the timeline as they rolled in, there where just minor adjustments on levels, and timing and such to be fixed in the end.
Of course, there would be a hundred ways of mixing this, but it turned out the way it did, 'cause I felt it sort of showed me the way as I worked with it.

Oh yes, I completly agree with Alannah. Splendid mix, Thor. And so glad this ordinary guy is part of it. Call me in for next year as well. If by then you're not world-famous of course, thinking of your MJ-friends as 'just good memories' :-) You did wonderful, man!

david sylvian, david bowie, nick cave, leonard cohen, scott walker, .... I've always been in good company when it comes to the MJ-ers comparisons of my voice :-) But most of all I'd like to sound like moorlandt some day. Working hard on that one...
Thanks again Thor for this lovely song, and I'm so honoured to be part of it.

Great tune, great singing (my only critique is that in headphones, near the beginning, some of the voices were panned suddenly way left or right) great sax playing... awesome work all!

panning &mdash 12/19/06 - 05:00:04 PM
Thanks drak, the panning you point out is maybe a bit to much at places, I agree. I received some stereo tracks that where panned all the way to the left... I guess I could have fixed them by making a new mp3 and imported them again, but then I kind of like the different placement making a broader 'live stage' feel. Listening to it in headphones I see now that it should have been adjusted a bit more to the center...
The sax from jack is really cool. He plays that horn like he hasn't been away from it at all.

Great result Thor! &mdash 12/18/06 - 07:00:23 PM
I wrote a lengthy response to this this morning - then forgot to post it apparently : )
Thor, you must have put a huge amount of work into this, and the result is something I'm proud to have been a part of. Like Walter, you can coiunt me in for 2007!
Thanks, and a very happy Christmas to you up there in the snow - we'll be sweltering over lunch outside in the gardedn - prawns, oysters and champagne all round. All the best for 2007!

Great work Neil &mdash 12/19/06 - 05:23:52 PM
As I mentioned in the reply to Alannah, this really came rolling very easy. And that is just because the stuff you all brought into it was great to work with.
And for the snow... I haven't seen anything yet.. We are still having around 10°C here... and it's wet wet wet... Global heating is around... hope we all manage with joined efforts to turn it to normal.
Thank you very much for your contribution all the way from Australia, with your good lyrics, and your cool voice:)

for taking, what must have been, a lot of time to weave all these parts together on another original Christmastime song by you. Your spirit of friendship and goodwill infects all who get acquainted with your music. And it is apparent that we who contributed to this song, likewise, were inspired by your music and lyrics. Beautiful sentiments... soulful song.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, my friend. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you Jack &mdash 12/19/06 - 05:34:58 PM
I think the spirit of friendship is strong here at macjams. It's very easy to get in touch with people here and that we give good response on each others music and contribute to a positive social set.
I glad you got inspired and picked up that new sax. You play it with confidence:)
BTW... do you read sheet music? I used to write some stuff for a horn section when I played in a soul band some years ago... Maybe I'll ask you to put some sax on a tune now and then.. if you're interested?

the Good company we keep &mdash 12/18/06 - 10:32:43 PM
Hey Thor and participants... first... I wish I would have heard this before I recorded... I think I just made a mess for Thor to clean up... Thor you are a patient & good fellow... I've always loved the soul of this piece, and it really comes through in spades... as well as the hearts of all of you...
I just had to point out that several coutries are represented here... Norway, Australia, Canada, Belgium, England, & USA... I wound up @ MJ by accident, and I'm very happy to be here.. in the beginning of 2006 if someone would have told me that I'd be involved in a music project with people from all over the world, i would never guess that it would be such a natural effortless process...
At Christmas we sing about peace, and we hope, in spite of what we see, that it could really be... Anyway, I say we ellect an MJer as King of the world... we'll show em how it's done...

You made no mess for sure Scott. Your creative timings and beautiful vocal arrangements is vital in making the chorus so powerful as it is. Your fantastic harmonies never disappoints.
I'm thrilled that I have gotten so many talented people to come sing with me. I aimed at an including theme that would suit this time of year, when we usually open our minds and tend to get a more generous heart...
For the King nomination, I'm honored and amused, but remember.. we're all ...one:)

I am so impressed it is incredible. Putting all these blends and "out of time" voices together into such a formidable result is nothing but impressive. And then I have said nothing about the composition, the instrumentation, the mix ... which is great. Fab Thoddi.
I see that a lot of the people already sign up for next year. By then I may have my own sound gear up and running and don't have to come down to your basement to record and drink with you... even though I really like those little meetings we have there. But sign me up too :-)
Thanks Thoddi - and all of you. It was great being a part of it.

Awesome!! &mdash 12/19/06 - 06:46:06 PM
Wow, I love hearing the switching between the voices in the verses and the overlapping in the choruses. It really emphasizes the sense of a diversity of people with, nevertheless, the same sentiments... also reflected in the truly international cast of talents. That alone makes this really cool, but it's also just a great song, rising to the level of the grand ideals expressed in the lyrics. Great job everyone. [ Reply to This ]
familiar voices &mdash 12/20/06 - 03:29:30 PM
That is what I like he most myself too. It's cool to here the voices we've got to be familiar with together like this. From Slimmies cool background vocals to moorlandts unique and strong performance.
And it is very exciting knowing that someone in another country and even on another continent is actually working on my tune and singing/playing together with me.

Macjammers for the World &mdash 12/20/06 - 12:59:04 AM
Sounds like We Are The MacjamsWorld... Love the lyrics! It is amazing to even imagine how talents from different corners of this planet converged to create this song. It is a huge effort to make something that was recorded in such a fragmented method take shape in a very unified and harmonious musical form! Very moving, and it elevated me into a sentimental plane. Thumbs up, Thoddi, and all the macjammers who took part in this project! Did the rest of us miss the invitation? ;) [ Reply to This ]
