Description:
A song by The Orbiting (illuminati & ledebutant)

This is more Matt's mix than mine. He was kind enough to throw me a special bed to play with. I only added a bass pedal/pad synth, some noodling piano, drums and a solo at the end.

Many thanks to The Orbiting for the opportuniy to collaborate.

Don't let KTB fool you, &mdash 12/20/06 - 10:23:01 AM
this remix succeeds by his efforts. I love the depth his work adds to the song. It has some serious heft now. Thanks for adding your touches to our song and I had fun working with you on this (sorry about all the delays!)

Matt, I remember you mentioning Thomas Dolby a while back (I think you mentioned seeing him live). You have a similar ability to mix an amazing assortment of instrumentation without making it crowded. There's still stuff I hear that seems new to me after a kazzilion listens. The backward guitars, fluttering strings and a thousand other cool cameo's.

Back in the day &mdash 12/20/06 - 11:26:44 AM
Back in the day (OK, it was 4 frickin' months ago), after listening to the original version of Saturnine, I posted a comment saying how much I wanted to try an alternate drum take for the last 50 seconds of the song (for giggles). Life intervened (as it has alot lately) and I never got my chance.

I gotta say, the drum flavor you've got here is so perfect. It's what I would have strived for (and probably not acheived anyway) had I taken a swing. The pace and groove is spot on, and really takes the song to a new place. I could rave about the great solo at the end, the most excellent "noodling piano" (your words) and the spacey soundscape that suits the mood so well, but I'm not gonna. The drums are what hit me the most, and they're awesome. Bravo!

Mike, you are too kind! I really appreciate you making such a thoughtful comment. The drums sounds came from a Roland TD7 midi drum controller. Of any part I added, i was most concerned about the drums and how they sync'd. Hearing from you and having your vote of confidence, really made my day!

Fibber! &mdash 12/20/06 - 11:49:39 AM
I'm with Matt. I heard early mixes of this version and your noodling, drums, solo, bass/pedal and pad add the special something to this take on Saturnine. This is one of my favorite remixes of the song, John and I hope you're very proud of what you brought out in the original music and vocals

I agree with kev that the drums are really very cool and I do some serious grooving in the new outro, so though I already married the old outro, I'm going to have to marry this one, too (don't tell the Feds.) ;-)

Thank you so much for your hard work on this!

Lisa, thanks for letting me tinker with it. This is my first MJ collab with singing and I couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome. Now when someone asks me "wass up" musically I play them this. Thats when they ask me who's singing! "She sounds awesome!" I can only agree. The backing vocals in particular are as nuanced and intriguing as anything I've heard

Graham, thanks for the good words. Matt sent me a killer mix to start so I was more than half way home when I started. The bass pedal/pad sound came from a Triton Extreme patch. One of those patchs where you hit a single note and let it sustain for a couple of days with out it losing steam.

Wow... &mdash 12/20/06 - 12:21:07 PM
Of all the awesome versions of Saturnine that I have listened to so far, i think this one has the most basic appeal for me. It does not obscure the melody and actually enhances it. Lisa's voice becomes a main feature here rather than just an ornament, and it is so lovely. The atmosphere in this song is more musical and ethereal, but that is not to say that I did not appreciate the other versions. They were all wonderful in their own way and created different themes and moods. This one didn't take long to seep into my muscial brain though. It kinda just sucked me in right away, and carried me way.

Leon, I tried not to step too hard on all the great tracks that were already there. I thought of what I could add in terms of accents and fill. There was a wonderful ambient quality to the original piece, I just wanted to swim in that.
I wanted to be the table lamp that when turned on casts a really cool glow in the room.

I love this song ...... &mdash 12/20/06 - 06:37:11 PM
.... all the versions of it! There is to me a hint of "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy in Lisa's vox, the chord structures and Matt's original bed - I also hear what you mean by the Thomas Dolby influence John.. Despite my enjoyment of all the Saturnine versions, this for me is the ultimate - the synth noodling at the end really got me in, and as Matt said, the extra depth that you've given this is just brilliant. I agree with Mike about the drums - they lift the song without taking over. I'm sure I agree with something Lisa said too : )
No wonder you use this to humour the "wassupers" John!
Excellent!
Peace,
Neil

Oh my... &mdash 12/20/06 - 07:35:47 PM
I thought that I might seem like the anti-christ if I posted a tune that wasn't a x-mas tune, but if this is the work of the anti-christ, I don't mind working w/ the devil...

Beautiful, guys! This is just Beautiful! Downloading this really makes me feel like I'm really gettng away with something... Way too good to be free. So nicely arreanged and produced with such grand lushness.

It's amazing how all of the different versions of this have just been so absoulutely, amazing. And certainly, Lisa's warm, rich and very sensual presentation of this was something to match...

But you guys did nothing but compliment what you had to start with. Well... - you did more than 'just compliment it' - you breathed a STUNNING new life into it by way of your very, very impressive talents.

It just amazes me that this is the sort of work that keeps getting produced on this site.

Bow til you can't cause the degree of pure goodness on this one can do nothing but craddle w/ sweetness, the hearts and souls of many until beyond the end of known time...

Congrads! D

Cap, underline and put in bold letters, each and every one of the words that I've shared above - When I had written that, I was listening to this on a itty bitty, teeny weeny computer speaker and still, the beauty of your work came through -- And now, I'm at home and on my system and I gotta tell you guys, I'm in a trance-like state of pure awe... Words only diminish what you've done here... This is truly a beautiful work of art.

I'm just sitting here drinking the ending in... I could loop that ending and swim in it... the fanfare quality calls to me from the very deep...

Ok now for the rest of this... you are sitting in the producer chair on this, so I'm happy to say that this doesn't have your thumbprint all over it.... which means good producer chops on your part... the song is really about Lisa's voice... and you have gone about framing her perfectly

I have to laugh when people bring me a demo, all exited and my response is "Who produced this? a guitar player right?" hey how'd you know... and it's obvious that the guy never considered the song, just his guitar...

YOU obviously know that... the song is everything

exellent John

Scott, you make me blush. I love to mix stuff. This was a challenge in the sense that there was so much cool stuff already going on. Matt (illuminati) gave me a ready to wear mix with he and Lisa already together. So i was ahead from the start :-) Then I added some tracks from there. I'm am honored that people such as yourself are generous with their ear, and take the time to comment.

Reinholt56, if there was one reaction I could hope to achieve it would be to make some music, that wasn't expected. To have someone click on a track for the very reason to explore, and to hear something unexpected (which hopefully they'll like :-) Thx for leaving a comment!

Genre shifting &mdash 12/24/06 - 03:50:41 AM
Just stunning. I frankly don't know how you can achieve a mix, and soundscape, like this (I'm currently mixing a track and this makes me want to pack it in!). Despite being a slow, sad track, you've given this tremendous energy, but still retained all the emotion in Lisa's vocal. Structurally, this is awesome - nothing obvious, but subtle changes that keep your attention all the way through.

I admire your work so much ... don't know what else to say, other than, teach me!

Excellent instrumentation and arrangement. The songs melody is very well written and the piece flows exceptionally well. Vocals were very good and i will have to look into more of the singers posts. Michael, thx for the nice comment. The mix is a true collab amongst Ledeb, illuminati, and myself. I recorded all my parts (bass pedal, piano, drums and solo) via MIDI. This allowed me to clean up my clams and choose patches after the fact to see what would sound best.

LL, glad you swung by and dug the tune. When it came to the classification I went with what Ledeb and Illuminati originally had posted it as. Since it was their tune and I was just sitting in so to speak :-) I'd be hard pressed to come up with my own anyway :-) New age, alt pop, soundscape?
