Gone (w/gregd)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Very laid back collaboration between gregd and myself. Almost jazz but mostly blues so I post it here. Started out as a piano solo. Asked gregd for help with the percussion and some guitar and bass, ended up letting him play most of the instruments. I added the lyric after we started. Never know where you might end up when you start. Firsts for me: Collaboration; Use of my voice; Use of live tracks. That's a lot of new territory, how did we do?

Note on remix: Adjusted balance and added some subtle effects. Piano, Bass and Voices are clearer and stronger now. Drums are hand done midi, all the rest of the tracks are live.

12/27 edit: deleted previous version to avoid confusion and removed (remix) from title.

Lyrics
Breaking it down, taking it down,
all of the places that I used to go are
Gone.

When I was young there was a bath house and a carousel;
Now when I go I find a Wendy's [and] a Taco Bell

Breaking it down, taking it down,
all of the places that I used to go are
Gone.

Up on the hill we had a campsite tucked in the woods;
Now if you look there's fifty houses furnished with goods.

Breaking it down, taking it down,
breaking it down, taking it down,
all of the places that I used to go are
Gone.
All of the places that I used to go are
Gone.

Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone.

Mr. Piano
Your verse vocals sound much more calm and bluesy. I like them a lot.

This definitely feels very organic, and that feels good. Though I can't notice too many differences in the mixing other than the vocals.

At any rate, we did good.

Voices
My vocal track was very noisy and the "basic male" effects from GarageBand actually made a lot of difference. I applied the same effect to your track, and only a little change is noticeable.

The other changes are subtle, but if you listen to them one after the other you can hear the bass and piano better in this version.

Back in time
this takes me, to the late 60s early 70s when jazz fusion ruled the roost. It has a very authentic jam sound and you've managed to convey a sense of it actually being played live and feeding off each other. That's difficult to do.

I think there's one or two timing issues but that, in a way, adds to the relaxed groove this has.

Cheers

Dick

Thanks for the insight. Even though I don't try to sound like my favorite players (King Crimson, Miles Davis, Bill Bruford...) the influence must be showing through :)

The collaboration has been a lot of fun. Patience is definitely the watch word. The reward is hearing someone else's interpretation of your ideas, and Greg has done a great job there :)

Happy Holidays

Absitively groovacious!
You guys nailed it! This works in every way. Top-notch production. Fun lyrics. Nice dual vocal delivery. Cool guitar, bass and keys. I hope this isn't your last collab gents.

Be well!

Groovacious
Good to hear from you. Time will tell if we get more collaborations out there, but we are more comfortable with the process now. I'm very happy with the instruments. My wife thinks the lyrics are funny.

Groovin'
Thanks for taking another listen! I think I'll leave the recording alone for a while, but I will still use the instrumental part as one of my regular practice pieces.

Great Vibe!
This has a wonderful vibe to it for sure! I agree that it could be considered jazzy (the drums especially remind me of jazz), but the rest is definitely the blues.

Excellent colab guys !

Thanks for listening
You've given me an idea for a song: "Choose the Genre Blues" I could give it a funky beat LOL

But seriously, I'm glad you agree this is in the right place even though it is not "true" blues. Where else would we put it? Folk Fusion???

Where else???
You could probably put it in a few different places, but it's best suited for where it is right now. Either that, or start your own category ;)

Hey PP, this is great stuff - I LOVE the keyboards on this, it's got such a laid back feel. Vocals are a tad loud, otherwise, a nice mix and lovely live feel.

Smooth stuff, gents.

Thanks for the compliments. Its easy to stay cool on the keyboard when you don't have to carry the whole tune!

On the vocals, well, I have a bit to learn about recording and using vocals in recordings.

Happy New Year.

Fused blues
I'm digging the fusion style drum beat mixed with a blues tune. Nice touch. I think you have a good voice and don't give enough credit. It has good tonal value to it where as mine doesn't. Enjoyed... you need to sing more often. Thanks for sharing.

Well thanks, I guess we are all our own voices worst critics. I may not add a lot more vocals because it is hard to record voice tracks when anyone is home, so I really shy away from them.

By the way, I like the drums GregD did also :)
