Description:
När juldagsmorgon glimmar
A standard Christmas hymn for children in my county.
It is about stable the morning after Christ was born.
It's origin is unclear but it is probably a German folk melody.
It came to Sweden in the middle of the nineteenths century.
Lyrics:
Swedish (English below):
När juldagsmorgon glimmar, jag vill till stallet gå
Guds son i nattens timmar där vilar upp på strå
Guds son i nattens timmar där vilar upp på strå
Välkommen hit till jorden, i signad juletid
Du är vår konung vorden som ger oss ljus och frid
Du är vår konung vorden som ger oss ljus och frid
Till dig vårt lov vi höjer, du barn i krubban där
och våra knän vi böjer för dig o Jesus kär
och våra knän vi böjer för dig o Jesus kär
An attempt at translation (by me):
When Christmas morning glimmering, I want to the stable go
God's son in nightly hours, there resting upon straw
God's son in nightly hours, there resting upon straw
Welcome here to the earth, in blessed Christmas time
You are our King becoming, who give us light and peace*
You are our King becoming, who give us light and peace*
To you, our praise we raise, you child there in the crib
and our knees we are bowing, to you oh Jesus dear
and our knees we are bowing, to you oh Jesus dear
* The Swedish word "frid" has no single corresponding word in English, but it means everything of "serenity", "tranquility" and "peace". There is also a similar word "fred" which means just "peace".

'Frid' it is &mdash 12/25/06 - 08:51:09 AM
I think I understand the word 'frid' even though I can't think of any Norwegian word to match it. Maybe 'ro'.
Hope you have a 'fridfull' Christmas Johannes:)
This song is beautiful, and you bring that along to us with your warm guitar tones. I guess you did this in one take... or did you record the soloing on a separate track? [ Reply to This ]

...of tasteful overdubbing... This is another beautiful melody, clearly and lovingly played... Great tone on the guitars... your technique with the ribbon mics captures a bright and natural sound...
A very wonderful Christmas gift, gratefully received....
Ed
You know, I bet you'd do a GREAT 'Smoke On The Water', at that... I look forward to your 'covers' album... If I may also suggest 'Proud Mary', 'Free Bird' and 'Whipping Post', for your consideration....

Haha &mdash 12/26/06 - 10:23:12 PM
Haha ... Well, smoke on the water to you guys!
That theme was the first thing some of my non-fiddlin friends taught to my son.
In a music store in town I once saw a placard saying:
"Feel welcome to try out our guitars,
but if you play smoke on the water your'e out o' here..."
I actually never tried the theme, but I'll be a good boy and follow advices and start practice...
Hoho... :o) [ Reply to This ]
Smoke on the Stairway to Heaven &mdash 12/27/06 - 08:17:27 AM
Yeah, the "No Smoke on the Water!" sign is not that uncommon in music stores here either. Ditto for "Stairway to Heaven." And "Recuerdos de La Alhambra." And "Le Marteau Sans Maitre," by Pierre Boulez. All the kids are playing that crazy modernist stuff nowadays, it seems... :-) I would like to make a motion that we all contribute a small sum of money to finance a new CD by Johannes, tentatively titled "Coriander Plays Death Metal Classics!" I'd buy it for sure! --- Visit my website for lots more free MP3s and scores. [ Reply to This ]
