Lyrics:
What (Other Plans)?

Well we've come so very far but still have very far to go
I wrap your dreams around me lest my fears begin to show
And today is just like any other day
We shovel fog in a most peculiar way
And we watch while many others work at play
If, they can
Life's what happens while you're making other plans

Through a haze of waking hours I dream I am asleep
But it really wouldn't know if I have promises to keep
And the League of Nations pledges its support
While they're planning to do nothing of the sort
They only covet the approval of the court-
Te-sans
Life's what happens while you're making other plans

And time devours everything; we've learned this to be true
And the frozen gaze just follows what the burning others do
You can't tell any losses from a win
And you find that this predicament we're in
Signals for the critics to begin
Their pans
Life's what happens while you're making other plans

Where are we? The convergence of the three.
Who are you? I am Free.
What do you ask of me? Seduce me.

The shattered vista's glory is just waiting in the wings
Ready to emasculate the mighty Lizard Kings
Tattered gypsies fade in caverns over there
It wasn't me who hid them, this I swear
Noble princes often blame the Amer-
Ee-cans
Life's what happens while you're making other plans

But there must be some solution, she said, her dress was torn
Must we always be forsaken, wishing we were never born?
Eating snails and figs they face the rites of spring
Mindless of the suffering they bring
They anticipate a gathering
Of clans
Life happens when you're making other plans

Sounds like Moody Country Blues. The song is epic. Thanks for the inclusion. I sang my contribution so long ago that I had almost forgotten. But hearing the final production brings the lyrics sharply back into focus.

You have penned some mighty lyrics which aptly describe the human condition. "We shovel fog in a most peculiar way" is a perfect companion to my own lyric from Rise Up, Cowboy where I wrote, "He rides the clouds in most peculiar ways."

We are a peculiar lot -- musicians, creatives, dreamers, scribes, wits, visionaries, hopefuls. We make life so hard on ourselves. You have some very rich imagery here. I do not know what it all means. A poem-song ripe for interpretation. Perhaps this could be alternately titled Stairway to Basement Console.

May the Twelve Days of Christmas renew hope. Perhaps we can all start to escape from our real and imagined bindings. Wrestle daily.

Some day, I'm going to post a tune that you and/or tiler don' hear as country :)

And thanks for being part of it man. If I ever get to Minn-ee-so-tah . . .

So that's what you all have been doing... &mdash 12/26/06 - 08:28:59 PM
Second Life sounds more and more fascinating...

That's one danged familiar melody, though... Having just recently downloaded the Joan Baez version, it's pretty hard to ignore...

I like the 12-string sound you're getting...

It is fascinating . . . and frustrating , , , and a number of other adjectives that begin with F.

and yes, guilty on the melody. thought I had changed it enough, a la Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon. Apparently not. :)

Glad you liked the 12-string. It's my '68 Martin D12-20. After many discussions (OK, more like listening intently whenever he talks about miking guitars) with tiler, I've finally settled on a three-mike setup, with two dynamics (one aimed at the back of the soundhole and a second up the neck) and an overhead condensor, for acoustic guitars. The only effects added come from the master track in GB, which in this case is a slightly-tweaked "Large Arena"

Here's one for ya. You know how I went back and forth a million times about dropping the music behind Joanna's "perfume voice" on the last line of the bridge.

About five minutes after I read your email "I vote for dropping the music" (which of course arrived after I'd posted the tune:), the young lad comes downstairs and says "you know Dad, I've been listening to that tune again and changed my mind, I think you should drop the music over that line."

Oh well, maybe on the album version :) Luckily tho, Joanna's voice is so strong it carries over just about anything. I swear I could listen to that girl sing the phone book and enjoy it.

Until the next tune Graham/Paul/Willie . . . your turn I believe :)

Jim Morrison meets Stephen King.

Someday soon I'll have to get myself back in-world to mix with this motley crew of the internet.

Snow, a finely crafted protest song as any I have heard. Well done.

It's really come a long way. The lyrics are intriguing and beautifully poetic -- makes me want to log back IN over there. (It's been awhile, eh?) This is a fantastic collab led by the master Snowdragon. Great job everyone!

Well, you, ya bugger, you changed everything when you sent me that killer fiddle track :)

You took the tune in a totally different direction, but that's one of the things I love most about MacJams . . . it is sooooo cool when people jump in with things that never occurred to you and damn, if they ain't just perfect!

Thanks a million babe.

I should be thanking you! I finally had a reason to play that old thing and sort of felt that "love" for it again. Perhaps some more practicing is in my future. You rock, Snow. :-)

Finally made it over to Macjams. The final version is great, Snowy! Sorry that I caused so much consternation over whether to drop out the music or not on the perfume read. I live to cause controversy. Heh.

Ya, i think this &mdash 04/18/07 - 07:04:51 PM
is better than I've ever heard. Like that 12 string sound descending in spots. Your voice is refreshing snow. Now I understand now what you are doing with the change of pace. Kind of "Eight Miles High" feel abit. Or a Beatles, Mystery Tour thang:)

Ya, lots of different styles here, like the fiddle. This could be one of your tops I've heard. An unusual ending for an unusually good tune. In a avant garde country, I'm am the Walrus, Snow, folk etc kind of way!

Ya, glade I listened to the outcome of this!

Surprising to see the outcome of this indeed!

I really paid attention to it this time and it has great thoughts. Love it as I do most of your other songs. Great thanks.
