Many thanks Skean &mdash 12/26/06 - 09:52:14 AM
I love the part of the world that you come from. I have only been to the north of Denmark, looking out towards Sweden across the water. One day I'll make the trip within the Arctic Circle, to sample the beauty, peace and tranquility.
Have a good 2007.

Amazing drama &mdash 12/28/06 - 02:52:33 PM
Paul, this is brilliant work! Thank you for the note! I just got done watching The Polar Express with my kids over the holiday and this would fit right in. I love, love, love, the choral bits. What are they? Samples? Software instruments? I'd love to get my hands on some similar sounds. The way you use them reminds me of Danny Elfman. The whole composition and production on this is absolutely pro. I love the choral crescendos and interweaving oboe & strings melody. Gosh, this is really stunning work. Please share what you used to create this. High marks and a fan from me! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks indeed..... &mdash 12/28/06 - 04:47:34 PM
The mix is all samples, cut and generally manipulated, mixed initally in a very simplistic way, for 'sound texture testing', to try and get a feel (and colour) for a section of the mix, move on to the next section, start the process again. If the sound is going where I want it to go, all well and good, but most times this doesn't seem to happen.
The collection of loops I used for this piece were downloaded, along with test software, from a German website, magix.com. They have all sorts of collections of sounds. I've used the sound collections for a few of my recent mixes.
The mastering was done using Goldwave, a Windows application that I've been using for a while.
Have a great 2007.

I have to check out those samples and site you mentioned. You've done a brilliant job with this piece. I forgot to mention the production; Sounds wonderful to my ears. I know you spent awhile mixing this, so you deserve the praise you're getting here! Wonderful.

My secret is out.... &mdash 12/29/06 - 06:35:32 AM
Here is a URL for the example pieces, showing off the different sample collections that anyone can download. As you may hear, I've used many of those collections in my mixes.
http://site.magix.net/english-uk/home/ipace-online-services/ipace-workshops/magix-online-medien-katalog/new/?no_cache=1#bt02
The link, under each section, will open up a media player and you can sample the sounds in a collection.
Take care.

seven minutes of delight &mdash 12/28/06 - 03:13:49 PM
Seven minutes.. but not one second too long. Very intriguing development of the whole composition. A brilliant orchestration and the production is simply top-notch. Oooh man, I dare not imagine what time this must have cost you. Hats off to you, Paul. And thanks to MissC for leading me to this song via a little pimp in the MJ chat :-)

I appreciate your kind words.... &mdash 12/28/06 - 04:54:08 PM
Thanks Walter for stopping by to listen. I am glad that the listening and relistening I did during the mixing of this piece was worthwhile for the result that one or two people besides myself listened and seemed to enjoy.
The piece took a few hours of my time, but I'd just finished work for a few days (for the holiday), so the time was there to be used.
Have a great 2007.

Amazing &mdash 01/06/07 - 12:30:12 AM
I am constantly amazed by the wonderful music produced by many of MacJams musicians and you are not exception.Did you use only GB3 or a different software? How did you learn to use it so well? [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for the comments... &mdash 01/06/07 - 10:53:33 AM
I used many pieces of both software and hardware to complete this version of the piece.
The biggest help was the wonderful, real-instrument loops.
I cut, paste, mix, produce (the loops/mixes) with both Mac's and PC's, Mac software, PC software, vst instruments, GB3 (and pretty much anything else that I can get my hands on).
With sound/production problems noticed on earlier work I listened to the 'final' mix through headphones, to appreciate more the overall mix/sounds.
Take care.

A rich tapestry of moods. &mdash 01/08/07 - 05:47:41 PM
Beautiful sounds and excellent orchestration. Liked the subtle choral texture always present but never overbearing. I did notice a little stutter a few of times. Seems like when you changed pitches. The whole production was very tasteful and uplifting but I did tire of the main theme, which kept repeating itself. For me it may have gone on a bit too long but overall it was a great production. Well done Reinholt.

Thanks Bowman for your comments.. &mdash 01/10/07 - 03:12:19 PM
I always enjoy constructive, technical comments. It helps me with work on later music.
The repeated nature of the piece, although changing in key, is one of the curses of using loops. I use either loop sets recorded in one key (and change loops to other note values on the fly) or, as in this case, sets with each loop having seven instances, one for each note in an octave.
The fixed number of looped recordings limits me (because I'm lazy) into working with what I have in any set, so I tend to repeat phrases (but in different keys) rather than have 'many' differing musical phrases. So the music appears, to me, step-like in progression.
My 'own', composed music, which should start appearing on here in the near future, thankfully is more 'normal', less repetative and so will sound less contrived, as it is brain, fingers, musical keyboard, music file upload as opposed to music files, brain, computer keyboard, headache, music file upload.
The loops used were actually based on film music phrases where the repetition may or may not go less noticed if the action is good in front of the soundtrack.
Once again thanks for listening and leaving your thoughts.
